1One day as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple courts and proclaiming the good news, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, together with the elders, came up to him.2‘Tell us by what authority you are doing these things,’ they said. ‘Who gave you this authority?’3He replied, ‘I will also ask you a question. Tell me:4John’s baptism – was it from heaven, or of human origin?’5They discussed it among themselves and said, ‘If we say, “From heaven,” he will ask, “Why didn’t you believe him?”6But if we say, “Of human origin,” all the people will stone us, because they are persuaded that John was a prophet.’7So they answered, ‘We don’t know where it was from.’8Jesus said, ‘Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.’
The parable of the tenants
9He went on to tell the people this parable: ‘A man planted a vineyard, rented it to some farmers and went away for a long time.10At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants so they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed.11He sent another servant, but that one also they beat and treated shamefully and sent away empty-handed.12He sent still a third, and they wounded him and threw him out.13‘Then the owner of the vineyard said, “What shall I do? I will send my son, whom I love; perhaps they will respect him.”14‘But when the tenants saw him, they talked the matter over. “This is the heir,” they said. “Let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.”15So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. ‘What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them?16He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others.’ When the people heard this, they said, ‘God forbid!’17Jesus looked directly at them and asked, ‘Then what is the meaning of that which is written: ‘ “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone”? (Ps 118:22)18Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed.’19The teachers of the law and the chief priests looked for a way to arrest him immediately, because they knew he had spoken this parable against them. But they were afraid of the people.
Paying taxes to Caesar
20Keeping a close watch on him, they sent spies, who pretended to be sincere. They hoped to catch Jesus in something he said, so that they might hand him over to the power and authority of the governor.21So the spies questioned him: ‘Teacher, we know that you speak and teach what is right, and that you do not show partiality but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth.22Is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?’23He saw through their duplicity and said to them,24‘Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription are on it?’ ‘Caesar’s,’ they replied.25He said to them, ‘Then give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.’26They were unable to trap him in what he had said there in public. And astonished by his answer, they became silent.
The resurrection and marriage
27Some of the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus with a question.28‘Teacher,’ they said, ‘Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.29Now there were seven brothers. The first one married a woman and died childless.30The second31and then the third married her, and in the same way the seven died, leaving no children.32Finally, the woman died too.33Now then, at the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?’34Jesus replied, ‘The people of this age marry and are given in marriage.35But those who are considered worthy of taking part in the age to come and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage,36and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God’s children, since they are children of the resurrection.37But in the account of the burning bush, even Moses showed that the dead rise, for he calls the Lord “the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob”. (Ex 3:6)38He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.’39Some of the teachers of the law responded, ‘Well said, teacher!’40And no-one dared to ask him any more questions.
Whose son is the Messiah?
41Then Jesus said to them, ‘Why is it said that the Messiah is the son of David?42David himself declares in the Book of Psalms: ‘ “The Lord said to my Lord: ‘Sit at my right hand43until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.’ ” (Ps 110:1)44David calls him “Lord.” How then can he be his son?’
Warning against the teachers of the law
45While all the people were listening, Jesus said to his disciples,46‘Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greeted with respect in the market-places and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honour at banquets.47They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.’

(Lu 3:3)5Sie aber bedachten’s bei sich selbst und sprachen: Sagen wir, vom Himmel, so wird er sagen: Warum habt ihr ihm nicht geglaubt? (Lu 7:29)6Sagen wir aber, von Menschen, so wird uns alles Volk steinigen; denn sie sind überzeugt, dass Johannes ein Prophet war. (Lu 1:76)7Und sie antworteten, sie wüssten nicht, wo sie her wäre.8Und Jesus sprach zu ihnen: So sage ich euch auch nicht, aus welcher Vollmacht ich das tue.
Von den bösen Weingärtnern
9Er fing aber an, dem Volk dies Gleichnis zu sagen: Ein Mensch pflanzte einen Weinberg und verpachtete ihn an Weingärtner und ging außer Landes für eine lange Zeit. (Isa 5:1; Mt 21:33; Mr 12:1)10Und als die Zeit kam, sandte er einen Knecht zu den Weingärtnern, damit sie ihm seinen Anteil gäben an der Frucht des Weinbergs. Aber die Weingärtner schlugen ihn und schickten ihn mit leeren Händen fort. (2Ch 36:15)11Und er sandte noch einen zweiten Knecht; sie aber schlugen den auch und schmähten ihn und schickten ihn mit leeren Händen fort.12Und er sandte noch einen dritten; sie aber schlugen auch den blutig und stießen ihn hinaus.13Da sprach der Herr des Weinbergs: Was soll ich tun? Ich will meinen lieben Sohn senden; vielleicht werden sie sich vor dem scheuen.14Als aber die Weingärtner den Sohn sahen, dachten sie bei sich selbst und sprachen: Das ist der Erbe; lasst uns ihn töten, damit das Erbe unser sei!15Und sie stießen ihn hinaus vor den Weinberg und töteten ihn. Was wird nun der Herr des Weinbergs mit ihnen tun?16Er wird kommen und diese Weingärtner umbringen und seinen Weinberg andern geben. Als sie das hörten, sprachen sie: Das sei ferne!17Er aber sah sie an und sprach: Was bedeutet dann das, was geschrieben steht: »Der Stein, den die Bauleute verworfen haben, der ist zum Eckstein geworden«? (Ac 4:11)18Wer auf diesen Stein fällt, der wird zerschellen; auf wen er aber fällt, den wird er zermalmen. (Isa 8:14; Da 2:34; Da 2:44)19Und die Schriftgelehrten und die Hohenpriester trachteten danach, Hand an ihn zu legen noch in derselben Stunde, und fürchteten sich doch vor dem Volk; denn sie verstanden, dass er auf sie hin dies Gleichnis gesagt hatte. (Lu 19:47; Lu 22:2)
Die Frage nach der Steuer (Der Zinsgroschen)
20Und sie beobachteten ihn und sandten Leute aus, die sich stellen sollten, als wären sie gerecht; die sollten ihn fangen in seinen Worten, damit man ihn überantworten könnte der Obrigkeit und Gewalt des Statthalters. (Mt 22:15; Mr 12:13; Lu 11:54; Lu 20:26; Lu 23:2)21Und sie fragten ihn und sprachen: Meister, wir wissen, dass du aufrichtig redest und lehrst und achtest nicht das Ansehen der Menschen, sondern du lehrst den Weg Gottes wahrhaftig. (Ac 10:34; Ac 18:26)22Ist’s recht, dass wir dem Kaiser Steuern zahlen, oder nicht?23Er aber merkte ihre List und sprach zu ihnen:24Zeigt mir einen Silbergroschen! Wessen Bild und Aufschrift hat er? Sie sprachen: Des Kaisers.25Er aber sprach zu ihnen: So gebt dem Kaiser, was des Kaisers ist, und Gott, was Gottes ist! (Ro 13:1; Ro 13:7)26Und sie konnten ihn in seinen Worten nicht fangen vor dem Volk und wunderten sich über seine Antwort und schwiegen still.
Die Frage nach der Auferstehung
27Da traten zu ihm einige der Sadduzäer, die sagen, es gebe keine Auferstehung, und fragten ihn (Mt 22:23; Mt 22:46; Mr 12:18; Mr 12:32; Mr 12:34; Ac 23:8)28und sprachen: Meister, Mose hat uns vorgeschrieben: »Wenn jemand stirbt, der eine Frau hat, aber keine Kinder, so soll sein Bruder sie zur Frau nehmen und seinem Bruder Nachkommen erwecken.« (Ge 38:6; De 25:5)29Nun waren sieben Brüder. Der erste nahm eine Frau und starb kinderlos.30Und der zweite31nahm sie zur Frau, dann der dritte, desgleichen alle sieben: Sie hinterließen keine Kinder und starben.32Zuletzt starb auch die Frau.33Die Frau nun – wessen Frau wird sie in der Auferstehung sein? Denn alle sieben haben sie zur Frau gehabt.34Und Jesus sprach zu ihnen: Die Kinder dieser Welt heiraten und lassen sich heiraten;35welche aber gewürdigt werden, jene Welt zu erlangen und die Auferstehung von den Toten, die werden weder heiraten noch sich heiraten lassen.36Denn sie können hinfort nicht sterben; denn sie sind den Engeln gleich und Gottes Kinder, weil sie Kinder der Auferstehung sind. (1Jo 3:1)37Dass aber die Toten auferstehen, darauf hat auch Mose hingedeutet beim Dornbusch, wo er den Herrn nennt Gott Abrahams und Gott Isaaks und Gott Jakobs. (Ex 3:6)38Gott aber ist nicht ein Gott der Toten, sondern der Lebenden; denn ihm leben sie alle. (Ro 14:8)39Da antworteten einige der Schriftgelehrten und sprachen: Meister, du hast recht geredet.40Denn sie wagten nicht mehr, ihn etwas zu fragen.
Der Sohn Davids
41Er sprach aber zu ihnen: Wieso sagen sie, der Christus sei Davids Sohn? (Mt 22:41; Mr 12:35; Joh 7:42)42Denn David selbst sagt im Buch der Psalmen: »Der Herr sprach zu meinem Herrn: Setze dich zu meiner Rechten, (Ac 2:34)43bis ich deine Feinde zum Schemel unter deine Füße lege.«44David nennt ihn also »Herr«; wie ist er dann sein Sohn?
Warnung vor den Schriftgelehrten
45Als aber alles Volk zuhörte, sprach er zu seinen Jüngern: (Mt 23:5; Mr 12:38)46Hütet euch vor den Schriftgelehrten, die gern in langen Gewändern umhergehen und es lieben, sich auf dem Markt grüßen zu lassen und obenan in den Synagogen und beim Gastmahl zu sitzen; (Lu 11:43)47sie fressen die Häuser der Witwen und verrichten zum Schein lange Gebete. Die werden ein umso härteres Urteil empfangen. (Isa 5:8; Isa 10:2)
