1 Now the gates of Jericho were securely barred because of the Israelites. No-one went out and no-one came in. 2 Then the Lord said to Joshua, ‘See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men. 3 March round the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days. 4 Make seven priests carry trumpets of rams’ horns in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march round the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets. 5 When you hear them sound a long blast on the trumpets, make the whole army give a loud shout; then the wall of the city will collapse and the army will go up, everyone straight in.’ 6 So Joshua son of Nun called the priests and said to them, ‘Take up the ark of the covenant of the Lord and make seven priests carry trumpets in front of it.’ 7 And he ordered the army, ‘Advance! March round the city, with an armed guard going ahead of the ark of the Lord.’ 8 When Joshua had spoken to the people, the seven priests carrying the seven trumpets before the Lord went forwards, blowing their trumpets, and the ark of the Lord’s covenant followed them. 9 The armed guard marched ahead of the priests who blew the trumpets, and the rear guard followed the ark. All this time the trumpets were sounding. 10 But Joshua had commanded the army, ‘Do not give a war cry, do not raise your voices, do not say a word until the day I tell you to shout. Then shout!’ 11 So he had the ark of the Lord carried round the city, circling it once. Then the army returned to camp and spent the night there. 12 Joshua got up early the next morning and the priests took up the ark of the Lord. 13 The seven priests carrying the seven trumpets went forwards, marching before the ark of the Lord and blowing the trumpets. The armed men went ahead of them and the rear guard followed the ark of the Lord, while the trumpets kept sounding. 14 So on the second day they marched round the city once and returned to the camp. They did this for six days. 15 On the seventh day, they got up at daybreak and marched round the city seven times in the same manner, except that on that day they circled the city seven times. 16 The seventh time round, when the priests sounded the trumpet blast, Joshua commanded the army, ‘Shout! For the Lord has given you the city! 17 The city and all that is in it are to be devoted^[1] to the Lord. Only Rahab the prostitute and all who are with her in her house shall be spared, because she hid the spies we sent. 18 But keep away from the devoted things, so that you will not bring about your own destruction by taking any of them. Otherwise you will make the camp of Israel liable to destruction and bring trouble on it. 19 All the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron are sacred to the Lord and must go into his treasury.’ 20 When the trumpets sounded, the army shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the men gave a loud shout, the wall collapsed; so everyone charged straight in, and they took the city. 21 They devoted the city to the Lord and destroyed with the sword every living thing in it – men and women, young and old, cattle, sheep and donkeys. 22 Joshua said to the two men who had spied out the land, ‘Go into the prostitute’s house and bring her out and all who belong to her, in accordance with your oath to her.’ 23 So the young men who had done the spying went in and brought out Rahab, her father and mother, her brothers and sisters and all who belonged to her. They brought out her entire family and put them in a place outside the camp of Israel. 24 Then they burned the whole city and everything in it, but they put the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron into the treasury of the Lord’s house. 25 But Joshua spared Rahab the prostitute, with her family and all who belonged to her, because she hid the men Joshua had sent as spies to Jericho – and she lives among the Israelites to this day. 26 At that time Joshua pronounced this solemn oath: ‘Cursed before the Lord is the one who undertakes to rebuild this city, Jericho: ‘At the cost of his firstborn son he will lay its foundations; at the cost of his youngest he will set up its gates.’ 27 So the Lord was with Joshua, and his fame spread throughout the land.

1 Jericho aber war verschlossen und verwahrt vor den Israeliten, sodass niemand heraus- oder hineinkommen konnte. 2 Da sprach der HERR zu Josua: Sieh, ich habe Jericho samt seinem König und seinen Kriegsleuten in deine Hand gegeben. 3 Lass alle Kriegsmänner einmal rings um die Stadt herumgehen, und tu so sechs Tage lang. 4 Und lass sieben Priester sieben Posaunen tragen vor der Lade her, und am siebenten Tage zieht siebenmal um die Stadt und lass die Priester die Posaunen blasen. 5 Und wenn man das Horn bläst und ihr den Schall der Posaune hört, so soll das ganze Volk ein großes Kriegsgeschrei erheben. Dann wird die Stadtmauer einfallen, und das Volk soll hinaufsteigen, ein jeder, wo er gerade steht. 6 Da rief Josua, der Sohn Nuns, die Priester und sprach zu ihnen: Tragt die Bundeslade und lasst sieben Priester sieben Posaunen tragen vor der Lade des HERRN. 7 Zum Volk aber sprach er: Geht hin und zieht um die Stadt; und wer bewaffnet ist, soll vor der Lade des HERRN hergehen. 8 Als Josua das dem Volk gesagt hatte, trugen die sieben Priester sieben Posaunen vor dem HERRN her und gingen und bliesen die Posaunen, und die Lade des Bundes des HERRN folgte ihnen nach. 9 Und wer bewaffnet war, ging vor den Priestern her, die die Posaunen bliesen, und das übrige Volk folgte der Lade nach, und man blies immerfort die Posaunen. 10 Josua aber gebot dem Volk und sprach: Ihr sollt kein Kriegsgeschrei erheben noch eure Stimme hören lassen, noch soll ein Wort aus eurem Munde gehen bis auf den Tag, an dem ich zu euch sage: »Macht ein Kriegsgeschrei!« Dann sollt ihr das Kriegsgeschrei erheben. 11 So ließ er die Lade des HERRN einmal rings um die Stadt ziehen, und sie kamen zurück in das Lager und blieben über Nacht im Lager. 12 Und Josua machte sich früh am Morgen auf, und die Priester trugen die Lade des HERRN. 13 So trugen die sieben Priester die sieben Posaunen vor der Lade des HERRN her und bliesen immerfort die Posaunen; und wer bewaffnet war, ging vor ihnen her, und das übrige Volk folgte der Lade des HERRN, und man blies immerfort die Posaunen. 14 Am zweiten Tage gingen sie auch einmal um die Stadt und kamen zurück ins Lager. So taten sie sechs Tage. 15 Am siebenten Tage aber, als die Morgenröte aufging, machten sie sich früh auf und zogen in derselben Weise siebenmal um die Stadt; nur an diesem Tag zogen sie siebenmal um die Stadt. 16 Und beim siebenten Mal, als die Priester die Posaunen bliesen, sprach Josua zum Volk: Macht ein Kriegsgeschrei! Denn der HERR hat euch die Stadt gegeben. 17 Aber diese Stadt und alles, was darin ist, soll dem Bann des HERRN verfallen sein. Nur die Hure Rahab soll am Leben bleiben und alle, die mit ihr im Hause sind; denn sie hat die Boten verborgen, die wir aussandten. (De 20:16; Jos 2:12; Heb 11:31) 18 Allein hütet euch vor dem Gebannten und lasst euch nicht gelüsten, etwas von dem Gebannten zu nehmen und das Lager Israels in Bann und Unglück zu bringen. (Le 27:28; De 13:18) 19 Aber alles Silber und Gold samt dem ehernen und eisernen Gerät soll dem HERRN geheiligt sein, dass es zum Schatz des HERRN komme. 20 Da erhob das Volk ein Kriegsgeschrei, und man blies die Posaunen. Und als das Volk den Schall der Posaunen hörte, erhob es ein großes Kriegsgeschrei. Da fiel die Mauer um, und das Volk stieg zur Stadt hinauf, ein jeder, wo er gerade stand. So nahmen sie die Stadt ein (Heb 11:30) 21 und vollstreckten den Bann an allem, was in der Stadt war, mit der Schärfe des Schwerts, an Mann und Weib, Jung und Alt, Rindern, Schafen und Eseln. 22 Aber Josua sprach zu den beiden Männern, die das Land erkundet hatten: Geht in das Haus der Hure und führt die Frau von da heraus mit allem, was sie hat, wie ihr es ihr geschworen habt. (Jos 2:12) 23 Da gingen die jungen Männer, die Kundschafter, hinein und führten Rahab heraus samt ihrem Vater und ihrer Mutter und ihren Brüdern und allem, was sie hatte, und ihr ganzes Geschlecht führten sie heraus und gaben ihnen einen Platz außerhalb des Lagers Israels. 24 Aber die Stadt verbrannten sie mit Feuer und alles, was darin war. Nur das Silber und Gold und die ehernen und eisernen Geräte taten sie zum Schatz in das Haus des HERRN. 25 Rahab aber, die Hure, samt dem Hause ihres Vaters und allem, was sie hatte, ließ Josua leben. Und sie blieb in Israel wohnen bis auf diesen Tag, weil sie die Boten verborgen hatte, die Josua gesandt hatte, um Jericho auszukundschaften. (Jud 1:25) 26 Zu der Zeit ließ Josua schwören: Verflucht sei vor dem HERRN, wer sich aufmacht und diese Stadt Jericho wieder aufbaut! Wenn er ihren Grund legt, das koste ihn seinen erstgeborenen Sohn, und wenn er ihre Tore setzt, das koste ihn seinen jüngsten Sohn! (1Ki 16:34) 27 So war der HERR mit Josua, dass man ihn rühmte im ganzen Lande.
