1Meanwhile Boaz went up to the town gate and sat down there just as the guardian-redeemer[1] he had mentioned came along. Boaz said, ‘Come over here, my friend, and sit down.’ So he went over and sat down. (Le 25:25)2Boaz took ten of the elders of the town and said, ‘Sit here,’ and they did so.3Then he said to the guardian-redeemer, ‘Naomi, who has come back from Moab, is selling the piece of land that belonged to our relative Elimelek.4I thought I should bring the matter to your attention and suggest that you buy it in the presence of these seated here and in the presence of the elders of my people. If you will redeem it, do so. But if you[2] will not, tell me, so I will know. For no-one has the right to do it except you, and I am next in line.’ ‘I will redeem it,’ he said.5Then Boaz said, ‘On the day you buy the land from Naomi, you also acquire Ruth the Moabite, the[3] dead man’s widow, in order to maintain the name of the dead with his property.’6At this, the guardian-redeemer said, ‘Then I cannot redeem it because I might endanger my own estate. You redeem it yourself. I cannot do it.’7(Now in earlier times in Israel, for the redemption and transfer of property to become final, one party took off his sandal and gave it to the other. This was the method of legalising transactions in Israel.)8So the guardian-redeemer said to Boaz, ‘Buy it yourself.’ And he removed his sandal.9Then Boaz announced to the elders and all the people, ‘Today you are witnesses that I have bought from Naomi all the property of Elimelek, Kilion and Mahlon.10I have also acquired Ruth the Moabite, Mahlon’s widow, as my wife, in order to maintain the name of the dead with his property, so that his name will not disappear from among his family or from his home town. Today you are witnesses!’11Then the elders and all the people at the gate said, ‘We are witnesses. May the Lord make the woman who is coming into your home like Rachel and Leah, who together built up the family of Israel. May you have standing in Ephrathah and be famous in Bethlehem.12Through the offspring the Lord gives you by this young woman, may your family be like that of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah.’
Naomi gains a son
13So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife. When he made love to her, the Lord enabled her to conceive, and she gave birth to a son.14The women said to Naomi: ‘Praise be to the Lord, who this day has not left you without a guardian-redeemer. May he become famous throughout Israel!15He will renew your life and sustain you in your old age. For your daughter-in-law, who loves you and who is better to you than seven sons, has given him birth.’16Then Naomi took the child in her arms and cared for him.17The women living there said, ‘Naomi has a son!’ And they named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David.

18This, then, is the family line of Perez: Perez was the father of Hezron,19Hezron the father of Ram, Ram the father of Amminadab,20Amminadab the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon,[4] (1Ch 2:11)21Salmon the father of Boaz, Boaz the father of Obed,22Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of David.

Boas sprach ihn an: »Komm doch herüber und setz dich[1]!« Als der Mann Platz genommen hatte,2rief Boas zehn der führenden Männer von Bethlehem und bat sie: »Setzt euch zu uns!«3Dann sagte er zu seinem Verwandten: »Noomi, die aus dem Land der Moabiter zurückgekehrt ist, will das Grundstück von Elimelech verkaufen, der ja zu unserer Sippe gehört hat.4Ich wollte dich darauf aufmerksam machen und dir vorschlagen, dass du das Grundstück kaufst. Die führenden Männer von Bethlehem und die anderen Versammelten hier sollen Zeugen sein. Also überleg es dir und sag uns, ob du es erwerben willst, damit es im Besitz unserer Sippe bleibt. Du hast das Vorkaufsrecht, weil du der nächste Verwandte bist. Ich komme erst nach dir.« Der Mann antwortete: »Gut, ich will es tun.«5Boas aber erwiderte: »Wenn du von Noomi das Grundstück erwirbst, musst du auch die Moabiterin Ruth heiraten, um mit ihr einen Sohn zu zeugen. Er soll als Nachkomme ihres verstorbenen Mannes gelten und eines Tages das betreffende Feld erben, damit es im Besitz dieser Familie bleibt.«6»Wenn das so ist«, meinte der andere, »trete ich meine Rechte auf das Grundstück an dich ab. Ich würde ja sonst etwas kaufen, was später nicht mehr meiner Familie gehört. Nimm du es!«7Wer zu dieser Zeit in Israel sein Besitzrecht einem anderen übertrug oder einen Tauschhandel abschloss, zog als Zeichen dafür seinen Schuh aus und gab ihn dem anderen. Damit war der Handel rechtsgültig.8Als nun Ruths nächster Verwandter Boas das Grundstück überlassen wollte, zog er seinen Schuh aus und gab ihn Boas.9Der wandte sich an die führenden Männer von Bethlehem und an die übrigen Versammelten: »Ihr seid heute meine Zeugen, dass ich von Noomi alles erworben habe, was ihrem Mann Elimelech und seinen Söhnen Kiljon und Machlon gehörte.10Damit habe ich auch die Verpflichtung übernommen, Machlons Witwe, die Moabiterin Ruth, zu heiraten und einen Sohn zu zeugen, der als Nachkomme von Machlon gilt. So wird der alte Erbbesitz in der Familie des Verstorbenen bleiben. Sein Name soll in unserer Sippe und bei den Einwohnern von Bethlehem niemals vergessen werden. Dafür seid ihr Zeugen!«11Die führenden Männer und alle anderen Zuhörer auf dem Versammlungsplatz bestätigten: »Ja, wir bezeugen es! Möge der HERR deine Frau so reich beschenken wie Rahel und Lea, von denen alle Israeliten abstammen. Wir wünschen dir, dass du immer mehr Ansehen gewinnst und dein Name hier in Bethlehem berühmt wird!12Der HERR möge dir und deiner Frau so viele Nachkommen schenken wie der Familie von Perez, dem Sohn Tamars und Judas.[2]« (Nu 26:19)13So wurde Ruth Boas’ Frau, er schlief mit ihr, und der HERR ließ sie schwanger werden. Als sie einen Sohn zur Welt brachte,14sagten die Frauen von Bethlehem zu Noomi: »Gelobt sei der HERR! Er hat dir mit diesem Kind jemanden gegeben, der für dich sorgen wird. Möge dein Enkel berühmt werden bei den Israeliten!15Er wird dir neue Lebensfreude schenken und sich um dich kümmern, wenn du alt geworden bist. Deine Schwiegertochter, die dich liebt, hat ihn geboren; sie ist mehr wert für dich als sieben Söhne!«16Noomi nahm das Kind auf ihren Schoß als Zeichen dafür, dass sie es als ihr eigenes annahm.17Ihre Nachbarinnen gaben ihm den Namen Obed (»Diener«) und erzählten überall: »Noomi hat einen Sohn bekommen!« Obed wurde der Vater von Isai, und dessen Sohn war König David.18Dies ist der Stammbaum von Perez: Perez war der Vater von Hezron,19und auf ihn folgten Ram, Amminadab,20Nachschon, Salmon,21Boas, Obed,22Isai und David.
