1 ‘And now, you priests, this warning is for you. 2 If you do not listen, and if you do not resolve to honour my name,’ says the Lord Almighty, ‘I will send a curse on you, and I will curse your blessings. Yes, I have already cursed them, because you have not resolved to honour me. 3 ‘Because of you I will rebuke your descendants[1]; I will smear on your faces the dung from your festival sacrifices, and you will be carried off with it. 4 And you will know that I have sent you this warning so that my covenant with Levi may continue,’ says the Lord Almighty. 5 ‘My covenant was with him, a covenant of life and peace, and I gave them to him; this called for reverence and he revered me and stood in awe of my name. 6 True instruction was in his mouth and nothing false was found on his lips. He walked with me in peace and uprightness, and turned many from sin. 7 ‘For the lips of a priest ought to preserve knowledge, because he is the messenger of the Lord Almighty and people seek instruction from his mouth. 8 But you have turned from the way and by your teaching have caused many to stumble; you have violated the covenant with Levi,’ says the Lord Almighty. 9 ‘So I have caused you to be despised and humiliated before all the people, because you have not followed my ways but have shown partiality in matters of the law.’ 10 Do we not all have one Father[2]? Did not one God create us? Why do we profane the covenant of our ancestors by being unfaithful to one another? 11 Judah has been unfaithful. A detestable thing has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem: Judah has desecrated the sanctuary the Lord loves by marrying women who worship a foreign god. 12 As for the man who does this, whoever he may be, may the Lord remove him from the tents of Jacob[3] – even though he brings an offering to the Lord Almighty. 13 Another thing you do: you flood the Lord’s altar with tears. You weep and wail because he no longer looks with favour on your offerings or accepts them with pleasure from your hands. 14 You ask, ‘Why?’ It is because the Lord is the witness between you and the wife of your youth. You have been unfaithful to her, though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant. 15 Has not the one God made you? You belong to him in body and spirit. And what does the one God seek? Godly offspring.[4] So be on your guard, and do not be unfaithful to the wife of your youth. 16 ‘The man who hates and divorces his wife,’ says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘does violence to the one he should protect,’[5] says the Lord Almighty. So be on your guard, and do not be unfaithful. 17 You have wearied the Lord with your words. ‘How have we wearied him?’ you ask. By saying, ‘All who do evil are good in the eyes of the Lord, and he is pleased with them’ or ‘Where is the God of justice?’

1 Darum hört, ihr Priester, was ich von euch verlange: 2 Nehmt euch meine Worte zu Herzen und gebt mir die Ehre, die mir gebührt! Sonst wird euch mein Fluch treffen. Ja, ich verfluche die Gaben, mit denen ich euch gesegnet habe.[1] Aber ihr wollt ja nicht hören; deshalb habe ich, der HERR, der allmächtige Gott, schon mit eurer Bestrafung begonnen. 3 Auch eure Nachkommen ziehe ich noch zur Rechenschaft.[2] Ich schleudere euch die Eingeweide eurer Opfertiere ins Gesicht, und dann wird man euch mitsamt den Abfällen hinauswerfen. 4 Daran sollt ihr erkennen, dass ich, der HERR, der allmächtige Gott, euch nicht umsonst gewarnt habe. Denn ich will, dass mein Bund mit dem Stamm Levi weiter besteht. 5 Ich versprach ihnen Leben und Wohlergehen und hielt mich an meine Zusage. Damals achteten mich die Leviten, und mein Name erfüllte sie mit großer Ehrfurcht. 6 Dem Volk gaben sie meine Weisungen unverfälscht weiter, kein unrechtes Wort kam über ihre Lippen. Sie lebten aufrichtig nach meinem Willen und brachten viele dazu, von ihren falschen Wegen umzukehren. 7 Und das ist ja der Auftrag der Priester: Sie sollen den Menschen zeigen, wie man mich, den HERRN, erkennt. Wenn jemand einen Rat braucht, soll er bei ihnen Rat finden, denn ich, der allmächtige Gott, habe sie zu meinen Boten ernannt. 8 Ihr aber seid vom richtigen Weg abgewichen, eure falschen Weisungen haben viele Menschen zu Fall gebracht. So habt ihr den Bund gebrochen, den ich, der HERR, der allmächtige Gott, mit den Nachkommen von Levi geschlossen habe. 9 Ihr haltet euch nicht an meine Gebote und seid auch noch parteiisch, wenn ihr Recht sprecht. Darum will ich dafür sorgen, dass ihr vor dem ganzen Volk erniedrigt werdet. Ja, alle werden euch einmal verachten!« 10 Haben wir Israeliten nicht alle denselben Vater? Hat nicht der eine Gott uns alle geschaffen? Warum handeln wir dann so treulos aneinander und brechen den Bund, den der HERR mit unseren Vorfahren geschlossen hat? 11 Ja, das Volk von Juda hat dem HERRN die Treue gebrochen. In Jerusalem und im ganzen Land haben Männer etwas Abscheuliches getan: Sie haben Gottes geliebtes Heiligtum entweiht und Frauen aus fremden Völkern geheiratet, die andere Götter anbeten. 12 Der HERR wird[3] diese Männer mitsamt ihren Familien aus der Gemeinschaft der Nachkommen Jakobs ausrotten. Da nützt es ihnen auch nichts, wenn sie ihn, den allmächtigen Gott, mit Opfergaben gnädig stimmen wollen. 13 Noch etwas gibt es euch vorzuwerfen: Ihr weint und stöhnt, ihr tränkt den Altar des HERRN mit Tränen, weil er von euren Opfern nichts mehr wissen will und sie nicht annimmt. 14 Ihr fragt nach dem Grund? Nun, der HERR selbst ist Zeuge dafür, wie ihr Männer eure Frauen verstoßen habt, mit denen ihr seit eurer Jugend verheiratet wart. Ihr habt ihnen die Treue gebrochen, obwohl ihr mit ihnen einen Bund fürs Leben geschlossen habt und sie immer an eurer Seite waren. 15 Hat Gott euch nicht zu einem Leib und einem Geist vereint? Und warum hat er das getan? Er wollte, dass eure Nachkommen zu seinem Volk gehören.[4] Darum nehmt euch in Acht und haltet euch an den Treueeid, den ihr einst euren Frauen geschworen habt. 16 Denn der HERR, der allmächtige Gott Israels, sagt: »Ich hasse Ehescheidung, ja, ich verabscheue es, wenn ein Mann seiner Frau so etwas antut. Darum nehmt euch in Acht und brecht euren Frauen nicht die Treue!« 17 Ihr werdet dem HERRN lästig mit eurem Gerede. »Was für ein Gerede?«, fragt ihr. Nun, ihr behauptet: »Wer Unrecht tut, gefällt dem HERRN; ihn nimmt er an!« Oder ihr fragt: »Wo bleibt denn Gott? Warum greift er nicht ein, wenn er doch so gerecht ist?«
