1Then I saw ‘a new heaven and a new earth,’ for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. (Isa 65:17)2I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.3And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Look! God’s dwelling-place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.4“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death” or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.’ (Isa 25:8)5He who was seated on the throne said, ‘I am making everything new!’ Then he said, ‘Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.’6He said to me: ‘It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life.7Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children.8But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practise magic arts, the idolaters and all liars – they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulphur. This is the second death.’
The new Jerusalem, the bride of the Lamb
9One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues came and said to me, ‘Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.’10And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God.11It shone with the glory of God, and its brilliance was like that of a very precious jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal.12It had a great, high wall with twelve gates, and with twelve angels at the gates. On the gates were written the names of the twelve tribes of Israel.13There were three gates on the east, three on the north, three on the south and three on the west.14The wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.15The angel who talked with me had a measuring rod of gold to measure the city, its gates and its walls.16The city was laid out like a square, as long as it was wide. He measured the city with the rod and found it to be 12,000 stadia[1] in length, and as wide and high as it is long.17The angel measured the wall using human measurement, and it was 144 cubits[2] thick.[3]18The wall was made of jasper, and the city of pure gold, as pure as glass.19The foundations of the city walls were decorated with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald,20the fifth onyx, the sixth ruby, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth turquoise, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst.[4]21The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each gate made of a single pearl. The great street of the city was of gold, as pure as transparent glass.22I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.23The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp.24The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendour into it.25On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there.26The glory and honour of the nations will be brought into it.27Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

Es wird keinen Tod mehr geben und keine Traurigkeit, keine Klage mehr und keine Qual. Was bisher war, ist für immer vorbei.« (Re 7:17)5Dann sagte der, der auf dem Thron saß: »Gebt acht, jetzt mache ich alles neu!« Zu mir sagte er: »Schreib dieses Wort auf, denn es ist wahr und zuverlässig.« (Isa 65:1; Re 5:7)6Und er fuhr fort: »Es ist bereits in Erfüllung gegangen! Ich bin das A und das O,[1] der Anfang und das Ende. Wer durstig ist, dem gebe ich umsonst zu trinken. Ich gebe ihm Wasser aus der Quelle des Lebens. (Zec 14:1; Re 1:8)7Alle, die durchhalten und den Sieg erringen, werden dies als Anteil von mir erhalten: Ich werde ihr Gott sein und sie werden meine Söhne und Töchter sein.[2] (2Sa 7:14; Eze 11:20)8Aber die Feiglinge und Treulosen, die Abgefallenen, Mörder und Ehebrecher, die Zauberer, die Götzenanbeter und alle, die sich nicht an die Wahrheit hielten, finden ihren Platz in dem See von brennendem Schwefel. Das ist der zweite, der endgültige Tod.« (Re 2:11; Re 20:10; Re 21:27)
Die neue Stadt Jerusalem, ihre Mauern und Tore
9Einer von den sieben Engeln, die die sieben Schalen mit den sieben letzten Katastrophen getragen hatten, trat zu mir und sagte: »Komm! Ich werde dir die Braut zeigen, die Frau des Lammes!« (Isa 54:1; Re 15:1; Re 19:7; Re 21:2; Re 22:17; Tob 13:9)10Der Geist nahm von mir Besitz, und in der Vision trug mich der Engel auf die Spitze eines sehr hohen Berges. Er zeigte mir die Heilige Stadt Jerusalem, die von Gott aus dem Himmel herabkam. (Eze 40:2; Re 1:10)11Sie strahlte die Herrlichkeit Gottes aus und glänzte wie ein kostbarer Stein, wie ein kristallklarer Jaspis. (Isa 60:1; Isa 60:19; Eze 43:2)12Sie war von einer mächtigen, hohen Mauer mit zwölf Toren umgeben. Die Tore wurden von zwölf Engeln bewacht, und die Namen der zwölf Stämme Israels waren an die Tore geschrieben. (Ge 35:22; Ex 28:21; Eze 48:30; Re 7:5)13Nach jeder Himmelsrichtung befanden sich drei Tore, nach Osten, nach Norden, nach Süden und nach Westen.14Die Stadtmauer war auf zwölf Grundsteinen errichtet, auf denen die Namen der zwölf Apostel des Lammes standen. (Eph 2:20; Heb 11:10)
Ihre Ausmaße und Baustoffe
15Der Engel, der zu mir sprach, hatte einen goldenen Messstab, um die Stadt, ihre Tore und ihre Mauern auszumessen. (Eze 40:3; Re 11:1)16Die Stadt war viereckig angelegt, ebenso lang wie breit. Der Engel maß die Stadt mit seinem Messstab. Sie war zwölftausend Wegmaße[3] lang und ebenso breit und hoch. (Eze 48:16)17Er maß auch die Stadtmauer. Nach dem Menschenmaß, das der Engel gebrauchte, war sie hundertvierundvierzig Ellen dick.18Die Mauer bestand aus Jaspis. Die Stadt selbst war aus reinem Gold erbaut, das so durchsichtig war wie Glas. (Isa 54:11; Eze 28:13)19Die Fundamente der Stadtmauer waren mit allen Arten von kostbaren Steinen geschmückt. Der erste Grundstein ist ein Jaspis, der zweite ein Saphir, der dritte ein Chalzedon, der vierte ein Smaragd,20der fünfte ein Sardonyx, der sechste ein Karneol, der siebte ein Chrysolith, der achte ein Beryll, der neunte ein Topas, der zehnte ein Chrysopras, der elfte ein Hyazinth und der zwölfte ein Amethyst.21Die zwölf Tore waren zwölf Perlen. Jedes Tor bestand aus einer einzigen Perle. Die Hauptstraße der Stadt war aus reinem Gold, so durchsichtig wie Glas.
Ihr Licht, ihr Reichtum, ihre Reinheit
22Einen Tempel sah ich nicht in der Stadt. Gott, der Herrscher der ganzen Welt, ist selbst ihr Tempel, und das Lamm mit ihm.23Die Stadt braucht weder Sonne noch Mond, damit es hell in ihr wird. Die Herrlichkeit Gottes strahlt in ihr und das Lamm ist ihre Leuchte. (Isa 60:1; Isa 60:19; Re 22:5)24In dem Licht, das von der Stadt ausgeht, werden die Völker leben. Die Könige der Erde werden ihren Reichtum in die Stadt tragen. (Isa 60:3; Isa 60:11)25Ihre Tore werden den ganzen Tag offen stehen, mehr noch: Sie werden nie geschlossen, weil es dort keine Nacht gibt.26Pracht und Reichtum der Völker werden in diese Stadt gebracht.27Aber nichts Unreines wird Einlass finden. Wer Götzen anbetet und sich nicht an die Wahrheit hält, kann die Stadt nicht betreten. Nur wer im Lebensbuch des Lammes aufgeschrieben ist, wird in die Stadt eingelassen. (Isa 35:8; Isa 52:1; Eze 44:9; 1Co 6:9; 2Pe 3:13; Re 3:5; Re 21:8; Re 22:15)
