1In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea2and saying, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.’3This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: ‘A voice of one calling in the wilderness, “Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.” ’ (Isa 40:3)4John’s clothes were made of camel’s hair, and he had a leather belt round his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.5People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan.6Confessing their sins, they were baptised by him in the River Jordan.7But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptising, he said to them: ‘You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?8Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.9And do not think you can say to yourselves, “We have Abraham as our father.” I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.10The axe has been laid to the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.11‘I baptise you with[1] water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptise you with[2] the Holy Spirit and fire.12His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing-floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.’
The baptism of Jesus
13Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptised by John.14But John tried to deter him, saying, ‘I need to be baptised by you, and do you come to me?’15Jesus replied, ‘Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfil all righteousness.’ Then John consented.16As soon as Jesus was baptised, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him.17And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.’

Gott wird jetzt seine Herrschaft aufrichten und sein Werk vollenden!«[1] (Mt 4:17; Lu 3:3)3Diesen Johannes hatte Gott schon durch den Propheten Jesaja angekündigt, der gesagt hat: »In der Wüste ruft einer: ›Macht den Weg bereit, auf dem der Herr kommt! Ebnet ihm die Straßen!‹« (Isa 40:3)4Johannes trug ein Gewand aus Kamelhaaren und um die Hüften einen Ledergurt. Seine Nahrung bestand aus Heuschrecken und Honig von wilden Bienen. (2Ki 1:8)5Die Leute aus Jerusalem, aus ganz Judäa und der ganzen Jordangegend kamen zu ihm,6bekannten öffentlich ihre Sünden und ließen sich von ihm im Jordan taufen.
Der Täufer fordert zur Umkehr auf
7Auch viele Pharisäer und Sadduzäer kamen, um sich von Johannes taufen zu lassen. Zu ihnen sagte er: »Ihr Schlangenbrut, wer hat euch gesagt, dass ihr dem bevorstehenden Gericht Gottes entgeht? (Mt 12:34; Mt 23:33; Lu 3:7)8Zeigt durch euer Leben, dass ihr euch wirklich ändern wollt!9Ihr bildet euch ein, dass euch nichts geschehen kann, weil Abraham euer Stammvater ist. Aber das sage ich euch: Gott kann Abraham aus diesen Steinen hier neue Nachkommen schaffen! (Lu 1:54; Joh 8:33; Joh 8:39; Ro 2:28; Ro 4:12; Ro 9:7)10Die Axt ist schon angelegt, um die Bäume an der Wurzel abzuschlagen. Jeder Baum, der keine guten Früchte bringt, wird umgehauen und ins Feuer geworfen.« (Mt 7:19)
Der Täufer weist auf Christus hin
11Johannes sagte auch: »Ich taufe euch mit Wasser, damit ihr euer Leben ändert. Aber der, der nach mir kommt, ist mächtiger als ich. Ich bin nicht einmal gut genug, ihm die Schuhe auszuziehen. Er wird euch mit dem Heiligen Geist und mit dem Feuer des Gerichts taufen. (Ps 51:9; Ps 51:12; Da 7:13; Mt 11:3; Mr 1:7; Lu 3:15; Lu 3:16; Joh 1:24)12Er hat die Worfschaufel in seiner Hand. Er wird die Spreu vom Weizen scheiden und seinen Weizen in die Scheune bringen. Die Spreu wird er in einem Feuer verbrennen, das nie mehr ausgeht.«
Jesus lässt sich von Johannes taufen
13Um diese Zeit kam Jesus von Galiläa her an den Jordan, um sich von Johannes taufen zu lassen. (Mr 1:9; Lu 3:21; Joh 1:32)14Johannes versuchte, ihn davon abzubringen, und sagte: »Ich müsste von dir getauft werden und du kommst zu mir?«15Aber Jesus antwortete: »Zögere nicht, mich zu taufen! Das ist es, was wir jetzt tun müssen. So eröffnen wir den Weg, auf dem der Wille Gottes ohne Abstriche erfüllt wird.«[2] Da gab Johannes nach. (Mt 5:17; Mt 28:19)16Sobald Jesus getauft war, stieg er aus dem Wasser. Da öffnete sich der Himmel, und er sah den Geist Gottes wie eine Taube auf sich herabkommen. (Isa 63:19; Eze 1:1; Joh 1:51; Ac 7:56; Ac 10:11; Re 4:1; Re 19:11)17Und eine Stimme aus dem Himmel sagte: »Dies ist mein Sohn, ihm gilt meine Liebe, ihn habe ich erwählt.« (Ps 2:7; Isa 42:1; Mt 12:18; Mt 17:5; Mt 21:37)
