The Gibeonite deception

1 Now when all the kings west of the Jordan heard about these things – the kings in the hill country, in the western foothills, and along the entire coast of the Mediterranean Sea as far as Lebanon (the kings of the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites) – 2 they came together to wage war against Joshua and Israel. 3 However, when the people of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai, 4 they resorted to a ruse: they went as a delegation whose donkeys were loaded^[1] with worn-out sacks and old wineskins, cracked and mended. 5 They put worn and patched sandals on their feet and wore old clothes. All the bread of their food supply was dry and mouldy. 6 Then they went to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal and said to him and the Israelites, ‘We have come from a distant country; make a treaty with us.’ 7 The Israelites said to the Hivites, ‘But perhaps you live near us, so how can we make a treaty with you?’ 8 ‘We are your servants,’ they said to Joshua. But Joshua asked, ‘Who are you and where do you come from?’ 9 They answered: ‘Your servants have come from a very distant country because of the fame of the Lord your God. For we have heard reports of him: all that he did in Egypt, 10 and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan – Sihon king of Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth. 11 And our elders and all those living in our country said to us, “Take provisions for your journey; go and meet them and say to them, ‘We are your servants; make a treaty with us.’ ” 12 This bread of ours was warm when we packed it at home on the day we left to come to you. But now see how dry and mouldy it is. 13 And these wineskins that we filled were new, but see how cracked they are. And our clothes and sandals are worn out by the very long journey.’ 14 The Israelites sampled their provisions but did not enquire of the Lord. 15 Then Joshua made a treaty of peace with them to let them live, and the leaders of the assembly ratified it by oath. 16 Three days after they made the treaty with the Gibeonites, the Israelites heard that they were neighbours, living near them. 17 So the Israelites set out and on the third day came to their cities: Gibeon, Kephirah, Beeroth and Kiriath Jearim. 18 But the Israelites did not attack them, because the leaders of the assembly had sworn an oath to them by the Lord, the God of Israel. The whole assembly grumbled against the leaders, 19 but all the leaders answered, ‘We have given them our oath by the Lord, the God of Israel, and we cannot touch them now. 20 This is what we will do to them: we will let them live, so that God’s wrath will not fall on us for breaking the oath we swore to them.’ 21 They continued, ‘Let them live, but let them be woodcutters and water-carriers in the service of the whole assembly.’ So the leaders’ promise to them was kept. 22 Then Joshua summoned the Gibeonites and said, ‘Why did you deceive us by saying, “We live a long way from you,” while actually you live near us? 23 You are now under a curse: you will never be released from service as woodcutters and water-carriers for the house of my God.’ 24 They answered Joshua, ‘Your servants were clearly told how the Lord your God had commanded his servant Moses to give you the whole land and to wipe out all its inhabitants from before you. So we feared for our lives because of you, and that is why we did this. 25 We are now in your hands. Do to us whatever seems good and right to you.’ 26 So Joshua saved them from the Israelites, and they did not kill them. 27 That day he made the Gibeonites woodcutters and water-carriers for the assembly, to provide for the needs of the altar of the Lord at the place the Lord would choose. And that is what they are to this day.

1 Die Siege der Israeliten sprachen sich im ganzen Land herum. Alle Könige westlich des Jordans – im Gebirge, im Hügelland und in der Küstenebene bis hin zum Libanon – erfuhren davon, die Könige der Hetiter und Amoriter, der Kanaaniter, Perisiter, Hiwiter und Jebusiter. 2 Sie alle taten sich zusammen, um gemeinsam gegen Josua und die Israeliten zu kämpfen. 3 Als die Bewohner von Gibeon, die zu den Hiwitern gehörten,^[1] erfuhren, was Josua mit Jericho und Ai gemacht hatte, 4-5 dachten sie sich eine List aus. Einige von ihnen verkleideten sich als Boten aus einem fernen Land. Sie zogen alte Kleider und abgetragene und geflickte Schuhe an, beluden ihre Esel mit abgenutzten Proviantsäcken und geflickten Weinschläuchen und packten lauter steinhartes Brot ein. 6 So gingen sie ins Lager nach Gilgal und sagten zu Josua und den Männern Israels: »Wir sind aus einem fernen Land gekommen und möchten, dass ihr ein Bündnis mit uns schließt.« 7 Aber die Israeliten antworteten den Hiwitern: »Wir können doch nicht einfach ein Bündnis mit euch schließen! Vielleicht wohnt ihr ganz in unserer Nähe.« (Ex 23:32; Ex 34:12; De 7:2) 8 Die Männer von Gibeon sagten zu Josua: »Wir sind deine ergebenen Diener!« »Wer seid ihr? Woher kommt ihr?«, fragte er sie. 9 Da erzählten sie ihm folgende Geschichte: »Deine ergebenen Diener kommen aus einem weit entfernten Land, weil der Ruhm des HERRN, eures Gottes, bis zu uns gedrungen ist. Wir haben alles erfahren, was er in Ägypten getan hat, 10 und auch alles, was er mit den beiden Amoriterkönigen auf der anderen Seite des Jordans gemacht hat, mit König Sihon von Heschbon und König Og von Baschan, der in Aschtarot regierte. (Nu 21:21) 11 Da sagten unsere Ältesten und alle Bewohner unseres Landes zu uns: ›Nehmt Verpflegung mit und macht euch auf die Reise zu diesen Leuten. Sagt ihnen, dass wir ihre ergebenen Diener sind, und bittet sie, ein Bündnis mit uns zu schließen.‹ 12 Und nun seht hier unser Brot: Es war noch warm, als wir von zu Hause aufbrachen; jetzt ist es hart geworden und zerbröckelt. 13 Seht unsere Weinschläuche: Sie waren noch neu, als wir sie füllten, aber jetzt sind sie rissig. Und unsere Kleider und Schuhe sind zerschlissen von der langen Reise.« 14 Die Männer Israels aßen zum Zeichen der Verbrüderung etwas von dem Proviant, den die Fremden mitgebracht hatten. Sie versäumten es jedoch, vorher den HERRN zu fragen. (Nu 27:21) 15 Josua gab den Leuten aus Gibeon die vertragliche Zusicherung, sie am Leben zu lassen. Und die Stammesoberhäupter der Israeliten versprachen ihnen das mit einem Eid. 16 Drei Tage nach Vertragsabschluss kam es heraus, dass die Fremden in Wirklichkeit in nächster Nähe mitten im Gebiet Israels lebten. 17 Die Israeliten waren nämlich weitergezogen und auf die Städte gestoßen, aus denen die Boten stammten: Gibeon, Kefira, Beerot und Kirjat-Jearim. 18 Sie konnten ihnen nichts antun, weil ihre eigenen Oberhäupter ihnen im Namen des HERRN, des Gottes Israels, Frieden geschworen hatten. Das ganze Volk murrte gegen die Stammesoberhäupter, 19 aber sie antworteten: »Wir haben ihnen im Namen des HERRN, des Gottes Israels, Frieden geschworen. Darum dürfen wir ihnen nichts antun (2Sa 21:1) 20 und müssen sie am Leben lassen, sonst wird der HERR uns schwer bestrafen. 21 Aber wir versprechen euch, sie sollen für ganz Israel den Dienst von Holzhauern und Wasserträgern übernehmen.«^[2] So geschah es auch. 22 Josua ließ die Abgesandten aus Gibeon zu sich kommen und sagte zu ihnen: »Warum habt ihr uns betrogen? Ihr habt erzählt, dass ihr von weit her kommt, und dabei wohnt ihr ganz in der Nähe! 23 Weil ihr das getan habt, sollt ihr verflucht sein. Euer Volk wird für alle Zeiten die Sklaven stellen, die für das Heiligtum meines Gottes Holz fällen und Wasser schöpfen.« 24 Sie erwiderten: »Wir haben so gehandelt, weil wir um unser Leben fürchteten. Wir hatten gehört, dass der HERR, euer Gott, euch durch Mose, seinen Bevollmächtigten, das ganze Land zugesprochen und euch befohlen hatte, alle seine Bewohner zu töten. (Jos 7:1) 25 Nun, wir sind in deiner Hand; mach mit uns, was du für richtig hältst.« 26 Josua schützte die Männer von Gibeon und erlaubte den Männern Israels nicht, sie zu töten. 27 Doch machte er sie zu Sklaven, die für die Israeliten und für den Opferdienst am Altar des HERRN Holz fällen und Wasser schöpfen mussten. Sie tun das noch heute an der Stätte, die der HERR zu seinem Heiligtum bestimmt hat. (De 12:5)
