1Now these are the areas the Israelites received as an inheritance in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun and the heads of the tribal clans of Israel allotted to them.2Their inheritances were assigned by lot to the nine-and-a-half tribes, as the Lord had commanded through Moses.3Moses had granted the two-and-a-half tribes their inheritance east of the Jordan but had not granted the Levites an inheritance among the rest,4for Joseph’s descendants had become two tribes – Manasseh and Ephraim. The Levites received no share of the land but only towns to live in, with pasture-lands for their flocks and herds.5So the Israelites divided the land, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
Land allotted to Caleb
6Now the people of Judah approached Joshua at Gilgal, and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, ‘You know what the Lord said to Moses the man of God at Kadesh Barnea about you and me.7I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadesh Barnea to explore the land. And I brought him back a report according to my convictions,8but my fellow Israelites who went up with me made the hearts of the people sink. I, however, followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly.9So on that day Moses swore to me, “The land on which your feet have walked will be your inheritance and that of your children for ever, because you have followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly.” (De 1:36)10‘Now then, just as the Lord promised, he has kept me alive for forty-five years since the time he said this to Moses, while Israel moved about in the wilderness. So here I am today, eighty-five years old!11I am still as strong today as the day Moses sent me out; I’m just as vigorous to go out to battle now as I was then.12Now give me this hill country that the Lord promised me that day. You yourself heard then that the Anakites were there and their cities were large and fortified, but, the Lord helping me, I will drive them out just as he said.’13Then Joshua blessed Caleb son of Jephunneh and gave him Hebron as his inheritance.14So Hebron has belonged to Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite ever since, because he followed the Lord, the God of Israel, wholeheartedly.15(Hebron used to be called Kiriath Arba after Arba, who was the greatest man among the Anakites.) Then the land had rest from war.

Die Leviten erhielten keinen Landbesitz, nur Städte, in denen sie leben konnten, und die dazugehörigen Weidegebiete für ihre Viehherden. (Ge 41:50; Ge 48:8; Nu 32:33; Nu 35:2)5Die Israeliten verteilten das Land unter die Stämme, wie der HERR es Mose befohlen hatte.
Kaleb bekommt seine Belohnung
6Nun traten die Männer des Stammes Juda zu Josua; alle waren noch im Lager in Gilgal. Mit ihnen kam Kaleb, der Sohn von Jefunne aus der Sippe Kenas. Er sagte zu Josua: »Du weißt, was der HERR in Kadesch-Barnea durch Mose, den Bevollmächtigten Gottes, uns beiden zugesagt hat. (Nu 14:24; Nu 14:30; De 1:36; Jos 4:19; Jos 9:6; Jos 10:43)7Ich war damals 40 Jahre alt, und Mose, der Diener des HERRN, hatte mir den Auftrag gegeben, von dort aus das Land zu erkunden. Als ich zurückkam, berichtete ich darüber so, wie es meiner Einsicht entsprach. (Nu 13:1; Nu 14:6; Nu 32:8)8Die Männer, die mit mir das Land erkundet hatten, machten dem Volk Angst; aber ich ließ mich nicht beirren und habe dem HERRN, meinem Gott, vertraut.9Da versprach mir Mose mit einem Eid: ›Der Teil des Landes, den du als Kundschafter betreten hast, soll für alle Zeiten dir und deinen Nachkommen als Erbbesitz gehören. Das ist der Lohn dafür, dass du dich an den HERRN, meinen Gott, gehalten und ihm vertraut hast.‹10Seither sind 45 Jahre vergangen, und der HERR hat mein Leben bewahrt, wie er es mir versprochen hatte, in der ganzen Zeit, während die Israeliten in der Wüste umhergezogen sind. Sieh mich an! Ich bin 85 Jahre alt11und bin noch genauso stark wie damals, als Mose mich ausschickte, und kann noch ebenso gut in den Krieg ziehen.12Darum gib mir nun als meinen Anteil das Bergland, von dem der HERR gesprochen hat. Du weißt noch von damals, dass dort die Anakiter in großen, stark befestigten Städten wohnen. Vielleicht steht der HERR mir bei, sodass ich sie vertreiben kann; er hat es mir ja zugesagt.« (De 9:1)13Josua segnete Kaleb und gab ihm die Stadt Hebron als Erbbesitz. (Jos 15:13)14Sie gehört noch heute seinen Nachkommen, weil er sich an den HERRN, den Gott Israels, gehalten und ihm vertraut hat. (Nu 32:12)15Hebron hieß früher Kirjat-Arba (Stadt Arbas); dieser Arba war der größte unter den Riesen im Volk der Anakiter. Das Land hatte nun Ruhe und Frieden.
