1Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias),2and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs he had performed by healing those who were ill.3Then Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples.4The Jewish Passover Festival was near.5When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming towards him, he said to Philip, ‘Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?’6He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.7Philip answered him, ‘It would take more than half a year’s wages[1] to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!’8Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up,9‘Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?’10Jesus said, ‘Make the people sit down.’ There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there).11Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.12When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, ‘Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.’13So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.14After the people saw the sign Jesus performed, they began to say, ‘Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.’15Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.
Jesus walks on the water
16When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake,17where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them.18A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough.19When they had rowed about three or four miles,[2] they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water; and they were frightened.20But he said to them, ‘It is I; don’t be afraid.’21Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading.22The next day the crowd that had stayed on the opposite shore of the lake realised that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not entered it with his disciples, but that they had gone away alone.23Then some boats from Tiberias landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.24Once the crowd realised that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus.
Jesus the bread of life
25When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, ‘Rabbi, when did you get here?’26Jesus answered, ‘Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.27Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.’28Then they asked him, ‘What must we do to do the works God requires?’29Jesus answered, ‘The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.’30So they asked him, ‘What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do?31Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: “He gave them bread from heaven to eat.”[3]’ (Ex 16:4; Ne 9:15; Ps 78:24; Ps 78:25)32Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.33For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.’34‘Sir,’ they said, ‘always give us this bread.’35Then Jesus declared, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.36But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe.37All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away.38For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me.39And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day.40For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.’41At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, ‘I am the bread that came down from heaven.’42They said, ‘Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, “I came down from heaven”?’43‘Stop grumbling among yourselves,’ Jesus answered.44‘No-one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day.45It is written in the Prophets: “They will all be taught by God.” Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. (Isa 54:13)46No-one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father.47Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life.48I am the bread of life.49Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died.50But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die.51I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live for ever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.’52Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, ‘How can this man give us his flesh to eat?’53Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.54Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.55For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink.56Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them.57Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me.58This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live for ever.’59He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.
Many disciples desert Jesus
60On hearing it, many of his disciples said, ‘This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?’61Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, ‘Does this offend you?62Then what if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before!63The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you – they are full of the Spirit[4] and life.64Yet there are some of you who do not believe.’ For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him.65He went on to say, ‘This is why I told you that no-one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.’66From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.67‘You do not want to leave too, do you?’ Jesus asked the Twelve.68Simon Peter answered him, ‘Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.69We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.’70Then Jesus replied, ‘Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!’71(He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)

Er wandte sich an Philippus: »Wo können wir Brot kaufen, damit alle diese Leute zu essen bekommen?«6Das sagte er, um Philippus auf die Probe zu stellen; er selbst wusste schon, was er tun würde.7Philippus antwortete: »Zweihundert Silberstücke wären nicht genug, um so viel zu kaufen, dass jeder auch nur einen Brocken abbekommt.«8Andreas, ein anderer Jünger, der Bruder von Simon Petrus, sagte: (Mr 1:16; Mr 13:3; Joh 1:40; Joh 12:22)9»Hier ist ein Junge, der hat fünf Gerstenbrote und zwei Fische. Aber was ist das schon bei so einer Menschenmenge?«10»Sorgt dafür, dass die Leute sich setzen«, sagte Jesus. Es gab viel Gras an dem Ort. Sie setzten sich; ungefähr fünftausend Männer waren da.11Jesus nahm die Brote, sprach darüber das Dankgebet und verteilte sie an die Menge. Mit den Fischen tat er dasselbe, und alle hatten reichlich zu essen. (Joh 21:9; Joh 21:13)12Als sie satt waren, sagte er zu seinen Jüngern: »Sammelt die Brotreste auf, damit nichts verdirbt.«13Sie taten es und füllten zwölf Körbe mit den Resten. So viel war von den fünf Gerstenbroten übrig geblieben.14Als die Leute das Wunder sahen, das Jesus vollbracht hatte, sagten sie: »Das ist wirklich der Prophet, der in die Welt kommen soll!« (De 18:15; De 18:18; Lu 7:16; Joh 1:21; Joh 4:19; Joh 7:40; Joh 9:17)15Jesus merkte, dass sie drauf und dran waren, ihn mit Gewalt zu ihrem König zu machen. Deshalb zog er sich wieder auf den Berg zurück, ganz für sich allein. (Joh 5:13)
Jesus geht über das Wasser
16Als es Abend geworden war, gingen seine Jünger zum See hinunter. (Mt 14:22; Mr 6:45)17Sie stiegen in ein Boot, um über den See nach Kafarnaum zurückzufahren. Es wurde Nacht und Jesus war immer noch nicht zu ihnen gekommen.18Das Wetter war sehr stürmisch und das Wasser schlug hohe Wellen.19Die Jünger hatten eine Strecke von etwa fünf Kilometern[2] zurückgelegt, da sahen sie plötzlich Jesus, wie er über das Wasser ging und sich ihrem Boot näherte. Die Angst packte sie.20Aber Jesus sagte: »Habt keine Angst, ich bin’s!«[3]21Sie wollten ihn zu sich ins Boot nehmen. Aber da waren sie auch schon am Ufer, dort, wo sie hinwollten.
Jesus ist das Brot, das Leben gibt
22Die Volksmenge, die am anderen Ufer geblieben war, erinnerte sich am nächsten Tag, dass nur ein einziges Boot am Ufer gelegen hatte. Die Leute wussten, dass Jesus nicht ins Boot gestiegen war und seine Jünger ohne ihn abgefahren waren.23Es legten aber andere Boote, die von Tiberias kamen, nahe bei dem Ort an, wo der Herr das Dankgebet gesprochen und die Menge das Brot gegessen hatte. (Joh 6:11)24Als die Leute nun sahen, dass Jesus nicht mehr da war und seine Jünger auch nicht, stiegen sie in diese Boote. Sie fuhren nach Kafarnaum und wollten Jesus dort suchen.25Sie fanden ihn tatsächlich auf der anderen Seite des Sees und fragten ihn: »Rabbi, wann bist du hierhergekommen?«26Jesus antwortete: »Amen, ich versichere euch: Ihr sucht mich nicht, weil ihr meine Wunder als Zeichen verstanden habt, sondern weil ihr von dem Brot gegessen habt und satt geworden seid. (Joh 2:11)27Bemüht euch nicht um vergängliche Nahrung, sondern um wirkliche Nahrung, die für das ewige Leben vorhält. Diese Nahrung wird euch der Menschensohn geben, denn ihn hat Gott, der Vater, als seinen Gesandten bestätigt.«28Da fragten sie ihn: »Was müssen wir denn tun, um Gottes Willen zu erfüllen?«29Jesus antwortete: »Gott verlangt nur eins von euch: Ihr sollt den anerkennen,[4] den er gesandt hat.«30Sie erwiderten: »Gib uns einen Beweis für deine Bevollmächtigung! Lass uns ein eindeutiges Wunderzeichen sehen, damit wir dir glauben. (Mt 12:38; Mr 8:11; Mr 13:22; Joh 4:48; 1Co 1:22)31Unsere Vorfahren aßen das Manna in der Wüste. In den Heiligen Schriften heißt es von Mose:[5] ›Er gab ihnen Brot vom Himmel zu essen.‹« (Ps 78:24)32Jesus entgegnete: »Amen, ich versichere euch: Nicht Mose hat euch das Brot vom Himmel gegeben, sondern mein Vater gibt euch das wahre Brot vom Himmel.33Das wahre Brot Gottes ist das, das vom Himmel herabsteigt und der Welt das Leben gibt.«34»Herr«, sagten sie, »gib uns immer von diesem Brot!« (Joh 4:15)35»Ich bin das Brot, das Leben schenkt«, sagte Jesus zu ihnen. »Wer zu mir kommt, wird nie mehr hungrig sein. Wer sich an mich hält,[6] wird keinen Durst mehr haben. (Joh 4:13; Joh 6:48; Joh 7:37)36Aber ich habe es euch bereits gesagt: Obwohl ihr meine Taten gesehen habt, schenkt ihr mir keinen Glauben. (Joh 16:9; Joh 20:29)37Alle, die mein Vater mir gibt, werden zu mir kommen, und niemand, der zu mir kommt, wird von mir abgewiesen. (Joh 17:2; Joh 17:24)38Ich bin vom Himmel gekommen, nicht um zu tun, was ich will, sondern um zu tun, was der will, der mich gesandt hat. (Mr 14:36; Joh 4:34)39Und er will von mir, dass ich niemand von denen verliere, die er mir gegeben hat. Vielmehr soll ich sie alle am letzten Tag zum Leben erwecken. (Joh 10:28; Joh 17:12; Joh 18:9)40Mein Vater will, dass alle, die den Sohn sehen und sich an ihn halten,[7] ewig leben. Ich werde sie am letzten Tag vom Tod auferwecken.« (Joh 5:24)41Die Zuhörenden[8] murrten, weil er gesagt hatte: »Ich bin das Brot, das vom Himmel gekommen ist.«42Sie sagten: »Wir kennen doch seinen Vater und seine Mutter! Er ist doch Jesus, der Sohn Josefs! Wie kann er behaupten: ›Ich komme vom Himmel‹?« (Mr 6:3)43Jesus sagte zu ihnen: »Was murrt ihr?44Nur die können zu mir kommen, die der Vater, der mich gesandt hat, zu mir führt. Und ich werde alle, die zu mir kommen, am letzten Tag vom Tod auferwecken.45In den Schriften der Propheten heißt es: ›Alle werden von Gott unterwiesen sein.‹ Wer den Vater hört und von ihm lernt, kommt zu mir. (Isa 54:13)46Nicht, dass je ein Mensch den Vater gesehen hätte. Nur der Eine, der von Gott gekommen ist, hat den Vater gesehen. (Joh 1:18)47Amen, ich versichere euch: Wer sich an mich hält,[9] hat das ewige Leben.48Ich bin das Brot, das Leben schenkt. (Joh 6:35)49Eure Vorfahren aßen das Manna in der Wüste und sind trotzdem gestorben.50Hier aber ist das Brot, das vom Himmel herabkommt, damit, wer davon isst, nicht stirbt.51Ich bin das lebendige Brot, das vom Himmel gekommen ist. Wer von diesem Brot isst, wird ewig leben. Das Brot, das ich geben werde, ist mein Leib.[10] Ich gebe ihn hin, damit die Menschen zum Leben gelangen können.«52Das löste unter den Zuhörern einen heftigen Streit aus. »Wie kann dieser Mensch uns seinen Leib, sein Fleisch, zu essen geben?«, fragten sie.53Jesus sagte zu ihnen: »Amen, ich versichere euch: Ihr habt keinen Anteil am Leben, wenn ihr das Fleisch des Menschensohns nicht esst und sein Blut nicht trinkt. (Mr 14:22; 1Co 10:16)54Wer mein Fleisch isst und mein Blut trinkt, hat das ewige Leben, und ich werde ihn am letzten Tag vom Tod erwecken.55Denn mein Fleisch ist die wahre Nahrung, und mein Blut ist der wahre Trank.56Wer mein Fleisch isst und mein Blut trinkt, bleibt mit mir verbunden und ich mit ihm. (Joh 15:4)57Der Vater, von dem das Leben kommt, hat mich gesandt, und ich lebe durch ihn. Genauso wird jeder, der mich isst, durch mich leben.58Das also ist das Brot, das vom Himmel herabgekommen ist. Es ist etwas ganz anderes als das Brot, das eure Vorfahren gegessen haben. Sie sind gestorben, wer aber dieses Brot isst, wird ewig leben.«59Dies sagte Jesus in der Synagoge von Kafarnaum, so lehrte er dort die Menschen.
Worte, die zum ewigen Leben führen
60Als sie das hörten, sagten viele, die sich Jesus angeschlossen hatten: »Was er da redet, geht zu weit! So etwas kann man nicht mit anhören!«61Jesus wusste schon von sich aus, dass sie murrten, und sagte zu ihnen: »Daran nehmt ihr Anstoß?62Wartet doch, bis ihr den Menschensohn dorthin zurückkehren seht, wo er vorher war!63Gottes Geist allein macht lebendig; alle menschlichen Möglichkeiten richten nichts aus.[11] Die Worte, die ich zu euch gesprochen habe, sind von diesem Geist erfüllt und bringen das Leben. (Joh 3:5; 1Co 15:45; 2Co 3:6)64Doch einige von euch haben keinen Glauben.« Jesus kannte nämlich von Anfang an die, die ihn nicht annehmen würden, und wusste auch, wer ihn verraten würde. (Joh 13:11; Joh 16:9)65Und er fügte hinzu: »Aus diesem Grund habe ich zu euch gesagt: Nur die können zu mir kommen, die der Vater dazu fähig macht.« (Joh 6:44)66Als sie das hörten, wandten sich viele seiner Anhänger von ihm ab und wollten nicht länger mit ihm gehen.67Da fragte Jesus die Zwölf: »Und ihr, was habt ihr vor? Wollt ihr mich auch verlassen?« (Mr 8:27)68Simon Petrus antwortete ihm: »Herr, zu wem sonst sollten wir gehen? Deine Worte bringen das ewige Leben.69Wir glauben und wissen, dass du der bist, in dem Gott uns begegnet.«[12] (Mr 1:24)70Jesus antwortete ihm: »Euch zwölf habe ich doch selber ausgewählt. Trotzdem ist einer von euch ein Teufel!«71Er meinte Judas, den Sohn von Simon Iskariot. Judas war es, der Jesus später verriet – einer aus dem Kreis der Zwölf. (Joh 12:4)
