1Now Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that he was gaining and baptising more disciples than John –2although in fact it was not Jesus who baptised, but his disciples.3So he left Judea and went back once more to Galilee.4Now he had to go through Samaria.5So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph.6Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.7When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, ‘Will you give me a drink?’8(His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)9The Samaritan woman said to him, ‘You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?’ (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.[1])10Jesus answered her, ‘If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.’11‘Sir,’ the woman said, ‘you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water?12Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?’13Jesus answered, ‘Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again,14but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.’15The woman said to him, ‘Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.’16He told her, ‘Go, call your husband and come back.’17‘I have no husband,’ she replied. Jesus said to her, ‘You are right when you say you have no husband.18The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.’19‘Sir,’ the woman said, ‘I can see that you are a prophet.20Our ancestors worshipped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.’21‘Woman,’ Jesus replied, ‘believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.22You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.23Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshippers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshippers the Father seeks.24God is spirit, and his worshippers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.’25The woman said, ‘I know that Messiah’ (called Christ) ‘is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.’26Then Jesus declared, ‘I, the one speaking to you – I am he.’
The disciples rejoin Jesus
27Just then his disciples returned and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no-one asked, ‘What do you want?’ or ‘Why are you talking with her?’28Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people,29‘Come, see a man who told me everything I’ve ever done. Could this be the Messiah?’30They came out of the town and made their way towards him.31Meanwhile his disciples urged him, ‘Rabbi, eat something.’32But he said to them, ‘I have food to eat that you know nothing about.’33Then his disciples said to each other, ‘Could someone have brought him food?’34‘My food,’ said Jesus, ‘is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.35Don’t you have a saying, “It’s still four months until harvest”? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.36Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests a crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together.37Thus the saying “One sows and another reaps” is true.38I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labour.’
Many Samaritans believe
39Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, ‘He told me everything I’ve ever done.’40So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days.41And because of his words many more became believers.42They said to the woman, ‘We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Saviour of the world.’
Jesus heals an official’s son
43After the two days he left for Galilee.44(Now Jesus himself had pointed out that a prophet has no honour in his own country.)45When he arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him. They had seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival, for they also had been there.46Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son lay ill at Capernaum.47When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death.48‘Unless you people see signs and wonders,’ Jesus told him, ‘you will never believe.’49The royal official said, ‘Sir, come down before my child dies.’50‘Go,’ Jesus replied, ‘your son will live.’ The man took Jesus at his word and departed.51While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living.52When he enquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, ‘Yesterday, at one in the afternoon, the fever left him.’53Then the father realised that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, ‘Your son will live.’ So he and his whole household believed.54This was the second sign Jesus performed after coming from Judea to Galilee.
1Jesus erfuhr, dass die Pharisäer auf ihn aufmerksam wurden, weil er mehr Anhänger gewann und taufte als Johannes. – (Joh 3:22)2Er selbst taufte übrigens nicht; das taten seine Jünger. –3Deshalb verließ Jesus Judäa und ging zurück nach Galiläa.4Dabei musste er durch Samarien ziehen.5Unterwegs kam er in die Nähe des Dorfes Sychar, das nicht weit von dem Feld entfernt liegt, das Jakob einst seinem Sohn Josef vererbt hatte. (Ge 33:14; Ge 48:22)6Dort befand sich der Jakobsbrunnen. Jesus war von dem langen Weg müde geworden und setzte sich an den Brunnen. Es war gegen Mittag.7Da kam eine samaritische Frau zum Wasserholen. Jesus sagte zu ihr: »Gib mir einen Schluck Wasser!«8Seine Jünger waren ins Dorf gegangen, um etwas zu essen zu kaufen.9Die Frau antwortete: »Du bist ein Jude und ich bin eine Samariterin. Wie kannst du mich da um etwas zu trinken bitten?« – Die Juden vermeiden nämlich jeden Umgang mit Samaritern. (Lu 10:33)10Jesus antwortete: »Wenn du wüsstest, was Gott den Menschen schenken will und wer es ist, der dich jetzt um Wasser bittet, dann hättest du ihn um Wasser gebeten und er hätte dir lebendiges Wasser gegeben.«[1] (Joh 7:37)11»Herr, du hast doch keinen Eimer«, sagte die Frau, »und der Brunnen ist tief. Woher willst du dann das lebendige Wasser haben?12Unser Stammvater Jakob hat uns diesen Brunnen hinterlassen. Er selbst, seine Söhne und seine ganze Herde tranken daraus. Du willst doch nicht sagen, dass du mehr bist als Jakob?« (Joh 8:53)13Jesus antwortete: »Wer dieses Wasser trinkt, wird wieder durstig. (Joh 6:35; Joh 7:37)14Wer aber von dem Wasser trinkt, das ich ihm geben werde, wird nie mehr Durst haben. Ich gebe ihm Wasser, das in ihm zu einer Quelle wird, die bis ins ewige Leben weitersprudelt.«15»Herr, gib mir von diesem Wasser«, bat die Frau, »dann werde ich keinen Durst mehr haben und muss nicht mehr hierherkommen, um Wasser zu schöpfen.« (Joh 6:34)16Jesus sagte zu ihr: »Geh und bring deinen Mann her!«17»Ich habe keinen Mann«, sagte die Frau. Jesus erwiderte: »Es stimmt, wenn du sagst: ›Ich habe keinen Mann.‹18Fünfmal warst du verheiratet, und der, mit dem du jetzt zusammenlebst, ist nicht dein Mann. Da hast du die Wahrheit gesagt.«19»Herr, ich sehe, du bist ein Prophet«, sagte die Frau. (Mt 21:46; Joh 9:17)20»Unsere Vorfahren verehrten Gott auf diesem Berg. Ihr Juden dagegen behauptet, dass Jerusalem der Ort ist, an dem Gott verehrt werden will.« (De 12:5)21Jesus sagte zu ihr: »Glaube mir, Frau, es kommt die Zeit, da werdet ihr den Vater weder auf diesem Berg noch in Jerusalem anbeten.22Ihr Samariter betet zu Gott, aber ihr kennt ihn nicht; doch wir kennen ihn, denn die Rettung für alle Menschen kommt von den Juden. (Isa 2:3; Ob 1:17; Ro 9:4)23-24Aber die Stunde kommt, ja sie ist schon gekommen,[2] da wird der Heilige Geist, der Gottes Wahrheit enthüllt, Menschen befähigen, den Vater an jedem Ort anzubeten. Gott ist ganz anders als diese Welt, er ist machtvoller Geist, und alle, die ihn anbeten wollen, müssen vom Geist der Wahrheit erfüllt sein. Von solchen Menschen will der Vater angebetet werden.« (Joh 3:3; 2Co 3:17; Php 3:3)25Die Frau sagte zu ihm: »Ich weiß, dass der Messias kommen wird, der versprochene Retter.[3] Wenn er kommt, wird er uns alles sagen.« (Lu 22:67; Joh 1:41; Joh 7:26; Joh 7:31; Joh 10:24; Joh 11:27)26Jesus antwortete: »Er spricht mit dir; ich bin es.«[4] (Joh 9:37)27In diesem Augenblick kehrten seine Jünger zurück. Sie wunderten sich, ihn im Gespräch mit einer Frau anzutreffen.[5] Aber keiner fragte ihn: »Was willst du von ihr?«, oder: »Worüber redest du mit ihr?«28Die Frau ließ ihren Wasserkrug stehen, ging ins Dorf und sagte zu den Leuten:29»Da ist einer, der mir alles gesagt hat, was ich getan habe. Kommt mit und seht ihn euch an! Ist er vielleicht der versprochene Retter?«[6]30Da gingen sie alle hinaus zu Jesus.31Inzwischen forderten die Jünger ihn auf: »Rabbi, iss doch etwas!«32Aber er antwortete: »Ich lebe von einer Nahrung, die ihr nicht kennt.«33Da fragten sie einander: »Hat ihm vielleicht jemand etwas zu essen gebracht?«34Jesus sagte zu ihnen: »Meine Nahrung ist, dass ich dem gehorche, der mich gesandt hat, und sein Werk vollende. (Joh 6:38; Joh 8:28; Joh 10:18; Joh 12:49; Joh 14:31; Joh 15:10; Joh 17:4)35Ihr denkt, wie es im Sprichwort heißt: ›Zwischen Saat und Ernte liegen vier Monate!‹ Aber ich sage euch: Macht die Augen auf und seht euch die Felder an! Das Korn ist schon reif für die Ernte. (Mt 9:37)36Er, der sie einbringt, erhält schon jetzt seinen Lohn und sammelt Frucht für das ewige Leben. Er freut sich zur gleichen Zeit wie der, der gesät hat.37Aber das andere Sprichwort, das trifft zu: ›Einer sät und ein anderer erntet.‹ (Mic 6:15)38Denn ich habe euch zum Ernten auf ein Feld geschickt, auf dem ihr nicht gearbeitet habt. Andere haben sich vor euch dort abgemüht, ihr braucht ihre Arbeit nur weiterzuführen.«39Viele Samariter in jenem Ort kamen zum Glauben an Jesus, weil die Frau bezeugt hatte: »Er hat mir alles gesagt, was ich getan habe.«40Als sie nun bei Jesus eintrafen, baten sie ihn zu bleiben, und er verbrachte zwei Tage bei ihnen.41Da kamen noch viel mehr von ihnen zum Glauben aufgrund seiner Worte. (Joh 2:23)42Sie erklärten der Frau: »Jetzt glauben wir nicht länger wegen deiner Erzählung, sondern weil wir ihn selbst gehört haben. Wir wissen jetzt, dass er wirklich der Retter der Welt ist.« (Lu 2:11)
Jesus heilt den Sohn eines königlichen Beamten
43Nachdem Jesus zwei Tage dort geblieben war, verließ er die Gegend und ging weiter nach Galiläa.44Er selbst hatte gesagt: »Kein Prophet gilt etwas in seiner Heimat.« (Mr 6:4)45Als er nun nach Galiläa kam, nahmen ihn die Leute freundlich auf. Sie waren nämlich beim Passafest in Jerusalem gewesen und hatten alles gesehen, was er dort während der Feiertage getan hatte.46In Galiläa kam Jesus auch wieder nach Kana, wo er das Wasser zu Wein gemacht hatte. Damals lebte in Kafarnaum ein königlicher Beamter, dessen Sohn war krank. (Mt 8:5; Joh 2:1)47Als er hörte, dass Jesus von Judäa nach Galiläa gekommen war, ging er zu ihm und bat ihn: »Komm doch nach Kafarnaum und mach meinen Sohn gesund; er liegt im Sterben.«48Jesus sagte zu ihm: »Ihr alle glaubt mir nur, wenn ihr aufsehenerregende Wunder seht.« (Joh 6:30)49Der Beamte bat ihn: »Herr, komm doch mit mir, bevor mein Kind stirbt!«50»Geh ruhig heim«, sagte Jesus zu ihm, »dein Sohn lebt!« Er glaubte dem Wort, das Jesus zu ihm gesagt hatte, und ging.51Schon unterwegs kamen ihm seine Diener entgegen und berichteten: »Dein Sohn lebt!«52Er fragte sie, seit wann es ihm besser gehe, und sie antworteten: »Gestern Mittag um ein Uhr hat das Fieber aufgehört.«53Da erkannte der Vater, dass es genau zu der Stunde geschehen war, als Jesus zu ihm sagte: »Dein Sohn lebt!« Er kam zum Glauben an Jesus, er und seine ganze Hausgemeinschaft. (Joh 2:23)54Dieses zweite Wunderzeichen vollbrachte Jesus, als er von Judäa wieder nach Galiläa gekommen war. (Joh 2:11)
