1After Jesus said this, he looked towards heaven and prayed: ‘Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.2For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him.3Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.4I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do.5And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.
Jesus prays for his disciples
6‘I have revealed you[1] to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word.7Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you.8For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me.9I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours.10All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them.11I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of[2] your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one.12While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by[3] that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled.13‘I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them.14I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world.15My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.16They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.17Sanctify them by[4] the truth; your word is truth.18As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world.19For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.
Jesus prays for all believers
20‘My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message,21that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.22I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one –23I in them and you in me – so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.24‘Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.25‘Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me.26I have made you[5] known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.’
1Als Jesus diese Rede beendet hatte, blickte er zum Himmel auf und sagte: »Vater, die Stunde ist gekommen! Setze deinen Sohn in seine Herrlichkeit ein, damit der Sohn deine Herrlichkeit offenbar machen kann. (Joh 2:4)2Du hast ihm ja die Macht über alle Menschen gegeben, damit er denen, die du ihm anvertraut hast, ewiges Leben schenkt. (Mt 28:18; Joh 3:35; Joh 5:24)3Und das ewige Leben besteht darin, dich zu erkennen, den einzig wahren Gott, und den, den du gesandt hast, Jesus Christus. (1Jo 5:20; Wis 15:3)4Ich habe deine Herrlichkeit auf der Erde sichtbar gemacht; denn ich habe die Aufgabe erfüllt, die du mir übertragen hast. (Joh 4:34)5Vater, gib mir nun wieder die Herrlichkeit, die ich schon bei dir hatte, bevor die Welt geschaffen wurde! (Joh 1:1; Joh 8:58; Joh 17:24)6Ich habe dich[1] den Menschen bekannt gemacht, die du aus der Welt ausgesondert und mir anvertraut hast. Dir haben sie schon immer gehört, und du hast sie mir gegeben. Sie haben sich nach deinem Wort gerichtet7und wissen jetzt, dass alles, was du mir gegeben hast, von dir stammt.8Ich habe ihnen die Worte weitergesagt, die du mir gegeben hast, und sie haben sie aufgenommen. Sie haben erkannt, dass ich wirklich von dir komme, und sind zum Glauben gekommen, dass du mich gesandt hast.9Für sie bete ich. Ich bete nicht für die Welt, sondern für die Menschen, die du mir gegeben hast; denn sie gehören dir.10Alles, was mir gehört, gehört auch dir, und dein Eigentum ist auch mein Eigentum. Durch sie wird meine Herrlichkeit sichtbar. (Joh 16:15)11Ich bin jetzt auf dem Weg zu dir. Ich bleibe nicht länger in der Welt, aber sie bleiben in der Welt. Heiliger Vater, bewahre sie in deiner göttlichen Gegenwart, die ich ihnen vermitteln durfte,[2] damit sie eins sind, so wie du und ich eins sind. (Joh 10:30; Joh 17:21; Ga 3:28)12Solange ich bei ihnen war, habe ich sie in deiner göttlichen Gegenwart beschützt und bewahrt. Keiner von ihnen ist verloren gegangen, nur der eine, der verloren gehen musste, damit die Voraussage der Heiligen Schriften in Erfüllung ging. (Joh 6:39; Joh 13:18)13Und jetzt bin ich auf dem Weg zu dir. Ich sage dies alles, solange ich noch bei ihnen in der Welt bin, damit meine Freude ihnen in ganzer Fülle zuteilwird. (Joh 15:11)14Ich habe ihnen dein Wort weitergesagt. Deshalb hasst sie die Welt, denn sie gehören nicht zu ihr, ebenso wie ich nicht zu ihr gehöre. (Joh 15:18)15Ich bitte dich nicht, sie aus der Welt wegzunehmen, aber sie vor dem Bösen in Schutz zu nehmen. (Mt 6:13; 2Th 3:3; 1Jo 5:18)16Sie gehören nicht zu dieser Welt, so wie ich nicht zu ihr gehöre.17Lass sie in deiner göttlichen Wirklichkeit leben und weihe sie dadurch zum Dienst. Dein Wort erschließt diese Wirklichkeit.[3]18Ich sende sie in die Welt, wie du mich in die Welt gesandt hast. (Joh 20:21)19Ich weihe mein Leben für sie zum Opfer, damit sie in deiner göttlichen Wirklichkeit leben und zum Dienst geweiht sind. (Heb 10:10)20Ich bete nicht nur für sie, sondern auch für alle, die durch ihr Wort von mir hören und zum Glauben an mich kommen werden.21Ich bete darum, dass sie alle eins seien, so wie du in mir bist, Vater, und ich in dir. So wie wir sollen auch sie in uns eins sein, damit die Welt glaubt, dass du mich gesandt hast. (Joh 5:18; Joh 17:11)22Ich habe ihnen die gleiche Herrlichkeit gegeben, die du mir gegeben hast, damit sie eins sind, so wie du und ich.23Ich lebe in ihnen und du lebst in mir; so sollen auch sie vollkommen eins sein, damit die Welt erkennt, dass du mich gesandt hast und dass du sie, die zu mir gehören, ebenso liebst wie mich.24Vater, du hast sie mir gegeben, und ich will, dass sie mit mir dort sind, wo ich bin. Sie sollen meine Herrlichkeit sehen, die du mir gegeben hast, weil du mich schon liebtest, bevor die Welt geschaffen wurde. (Joh 12:26; Joh 17:5)25Vater, du bist gerecht. Die Welt hat dich nicht erkannt; aber ich kenne dich, und diese hier haben erkannt, dass du mich gesandt hast. (Mt 11:25; Joh 8:55)26Ich habe ihnen gezeigt, wer du bist,[4] und werde es weiter tun. So wird die Liebe, die du zu mir hast, auch sie erfüllen und ich werde in ihnen leben.«
