1This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord:2‘Stand at the gate of the Lord’s house and there proclaim this message: ‘ “Hear the word of the Lord, all you people of Judah who come through these gates to worship the Lord.3This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: reform your ways and your actions, and I will let you live in this place.4Do not trust in deceptive words and say, ‘This is the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord!’5If you really change your ways and your actions and deal with each other justly,6if you do not oppress the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow and do not shed innocent blood in this place, and if you do not follow other gods to your own harm,7then I will let you live in this place, in the land I gave to your ancestors for ever and ever.8But look, you are trusting in deceptive words that are worthless.9‘ “Will you steal and murder, commit adultery and perjury,[1] burn incense to Baal and follow other gods you have not known,10and then come and stand before me in this house, which bears my Name, and say, ‘We are safe’ – safe to do all these detestable things?11Has this house, which bears my Name, become a den of robbers to you? But I have been watching! declares the Lord.12‘ “Go now to the place in Shiloh where I first made a dwelling for my Name, and see what I did to it because of the wickedness of my people Israel.13While you were doing all these things, declares the Lord, I spoke to you again and again, but you did not listen; I called you, but you did not answer.14Therefore, what I did to Shiloh I will now do to the house that bears my Name, the temple you trust in, the place I gave to you and your ancestors.15I will thrust you from my presence, just as I did all your fellow Israelites, the people of Ephraim.”16‘So do not pray for this people nor offer any plea or petition for them; do not plead with me, for I will not listen to you.17Do you not see what they are doing in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?18The children gather wood, the fathers light the fire, and the women knead the dough and make cakes to offer to the Queen of Heaven. They pour out drink offerings to other gods to arouse my anger.19But am I the one they are provoking? declares the Lord. Are they not rather harming themselves, to their own shame?20‘ “Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: my anger and my wrath will be poured out on this place – on man and beast, on the trees of the field and on the crops of your land – and it will burn and not be quenched.21‘ “This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: go ahead, add your burnt offerings to your other sacrifices and eat the meat yourselves!22For when I brought your ancestors out of Egypt and spoke to them, I did not just give them commands about burnt offerings and sacrifices,23but I gave them this command: obey me, and I will be your God and you will be my people. Walk in obedience to all I command you, that it may go well with you.24But they did not listen or pay attention; instead, they followed the stubborn inclinations of their evil hearts. They went backwards and not forwards.25From the time your ancestors left Egypt until now, day after day, again and again I sent you my servants the prophets.26But they did not listen to me or pay attention. They were stiff-necked and did more evil than their ancestors.”27‘When you tell them all this, they will not listen to you; when you call to them, they will not answer.28Therefore say to them, “This is the nation that has not obeyed the Lord its God or responded to correction. Truth has perished; it has vanished from their lips.29‘ “Cut off your hair and throw it away; take up a lament on the barren heights, for the Lord has rejected and abandoned this generation that is under his wrath.
The valley of slaughter
30‘ “The people of Judah have done evil in my eyes, declares the Lord. They have set up their detestable idols in the house that bears my Name and have defiled it.31They have built the high places of Topheth in the Valley of Ben Hinnom to burn their sons and daughters in the fire – something I did not command, nor did it enter my mind.32So beware, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when people will no longer call it Topheth or the Valley of Ben Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter, for they will bury the dead in Topheth until there is no more room.33Then the carcasses of this people will become food for the birds and the wild animals, and there will be no-one to frighten them away.34I will bring an end to the sounds of joy and gladness and to the voices of bride and bridegroom in the towns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem, for the land will become desolate.

Geht gerecht miteinander um; (Ex 22:20; Ex 22:21; De 19:10; Jer 22:3; Jer 22:17)6nutzt nicht Fremde, Waisen und Witwen aus; vergießt nicht das Blut unschuldiger Menschen! Lauft nicht den fremden Göttern nach, die euch ins Unglück bringen!7Nur dann könnt ihr hier wohnen bleiben, in dem Land, das ich euren Vorfahren als Erbbesitz gegeben habe.8Seht doch ein, dass ihr euch selbst betrügt!9Ihr stehlt und mordet, brecht die Ehe, schwört Meineide, bringt dem Baal eure Opfergaben und verehrt fremde Götter, die euch nichts angehen. (Ex 20:13; Jer 25:6; Ho 4:2)10Und dann kommt ihr und stellt euch hier in meinem Haus vor mich hin und sagt: Uns kann nichts geschehen! Dabei tut ihr weiterhin alles, was ich verabscheue.11Ist denn dieses Haus, das doch mein Eigentum ist, in euren Augen ein Versteck für Räuber geworden? Gut, dann werde auch ich es so ansehen. Das sage ich, der HERR. (Mr 11:17)12Geht doch nach Schilo, wo ich früher meinen Tempel hatte, die Wohnstätte meines Namens![3] Seht euch an, wie ich ihn verwüstet habe, weil die Leute von Israel so viel Böses taten. (Jos 18:1; Jer 26:9)13Ihr selbst treibt es genauso schlimm. Dafür ziehe ich euch jetzt zur Rechenschaft, ich, der HERR. Sooft ich auch zu euch sprach – ihr habt nicht hingehört; wenn ich rief, habt ihr nicht geantwortet. (Jer 6:10; Jer 7:25; Jer 11:8; Jer 13:10; Jer 25:3; Jer 26:5; Jer 29:19; Jer 35:14; Jer 37:2)14Darum will ich jetzt mit dem Haus, das mein Eigentum ist und auf das ihr euer Vertrauen setzt, verfahren wie mit Schilo. Ich werde diesen Tempel, in dem ich euch und euren Vorfahren nahe sein wollte, genauso dem Erdboden gleichmachen.15Und euch will ich nicht mehr sehen; darum verstoße ich euch, wie ich euer Brudervolk, die Leute von Efraïm, verstoßen habe.‹« (2Ki 17:7)
Jeremia darf nicht für sein Volk beten
16»Du aber, Jeremia, hör auf, für dieses Volk zu beten! Versuche nicht, bei mir für sie einzutreten, dringe nicht in mich! Ich werde nicht auf dich hören. (Ge 18:16; Ge 20:7; 1Ki 13:6; 2Ki 19:4; Jer 11:14; Jer 14:11; Jer 15:1; Jer 18:20; Jer 37:3; Am 7:2; Am 7:5)17Sieh doch selbst, wie sie es in den Städten in Juda und auf den Straßen Jerusalems treiben! (De 4:19; Jer 19:13; Jer 44:17)18Die Kinder sammeln Brennholz, die Männer zünden Feuer an und die Frauen kneten Teig und backen Kuchen als Opfer für die Himmelskönigin. Außerdem bringen sie anderen Göttern Wein als Trankopfer dar. Das alles tun sie mir zum Trotz.19Aber bilden sie sich denn ein«, sagte der HERR, »dass sie mir damit etwas antun? Sie schaden ja nur sich selbst! Sie werden es noch erleben, wie Unglück und Schande über sie kommen.«20Der HERR, der mächtige Gott, hat sein Urteil gefällt, er sagt: »Ich gieße meinen Zorn über diesen Tempel aus. Er trifft die Menschen und die Tiere, die Bäume und die Ernte auf dem Feld. Er brennt wie ein Feuer, das niemand löschen kann.«
Ein Volk, das nicht hört
21Der HERR, der Herrscher der Welt,[4] der Gott Israels, sagt: »Warum verbrennt ihr mir Tiere als Brandopfer? Tut sie zu den anderen dazu, die ihr für das Opfermahl schlachtet, esst das Fleisch doch auf! (Jer 6:20)22Als ich eure Vorfahren aus Ägypten herausführte, habe ich ihnen nicht befohlen, mir Brand- oder Mahlopfer darzubringen. (Am 5:25)23Aber das habe ich zu ihnen gesagt: ›Gehorcht mir und lebt nach den Geboten, die ich euch gebe. Dann wird es euch gut gehen: Ich will euer Gott sein und ihr sollt mein Volk sein.‹ (Ex 19:5; Le 18:5; Le 26:12; De 6:3; De 26:17; Jer 30:22; Eze 11:20; Ho 2:25)24Aber sie hörten nicht auf mich, sondern taten, was ihr böses und eigensinniges Herz ihnen eingab. Sie wandten sich von mir ab und kehrten mir den Rücken. (Jer 9:13; Jer 11:8; Jer 16:12; Jer 18:12)25So war es schon damals, als ich eure Vorfahren aus Ägypten führte, und so ist es geblieben bis auf den heutigen Tag. Immer von Neuem schickte ich euch meine Diener, die Propheten; (Jer 7:13; Jer 25:4)26aber niemand von euch kümmerte sich darum, niemand hörte auf mich. Ihr seid starrsinnig geblieben und habt es noch schlimmer getrieben als eure Vorfahren. (Jer 7:13; Jer 17:23; Jer 19:15)27Und du, Jeremia, wirst ihnen dies alles vorhalten, aber sie werden nicht auf dich hören; du wirst sie rufen und keine Antwort bekommen.28Dann sollst du ihnen sagen: ›Ihr seid das Volk, das auf den HERRN, seinen Gott, nicht gehört hat. Von Treue ist bei euch keine Rede mehr, gestorben ist sie!‹« (Jer 5:3)
Tal des Mordens, Tal der Toten
29Ihr Leute von Jerusalem, schneidet euer Haar ab und werft es weg! Stimmt Trauerlieder an auf den kahlen Höhen! Der HERR empfindet für euch nur noch Zorn. Er hat euch fallen lassen und will von euch nichts mehr wissen.30»So ist es«, sagt der HERR, »die Leute von Juda haben getan, was mich beleidigt. Sie haben ihre abscheulichen Götzenbilder im Tempel aufgestellt und dadurch das Haus geschändet, das mein Eigentum ist. (Jer 32:34; Eze 8:5; Eze 8:10)31Im Hinnom-Tal bauten sie die Opferstätte Tofet, um dort ihre Söhne und Töchter als Opfer zu verbrennen. Das habe ich nicht befohlen; es ist mir auch nie in den Sinn gekommen, so etwas von ihnen zu verlangen. (Le 18:21; Jer 3:24; Jer 19:5)32Deshalb ist der Tag nicht fern, an dem dieser Ort nicht mehr Tofet genannt wird oder Hinnom-Tal, sondern Mordtal. Sie werden dort die Toten begraben, weil es sonst nirgends mehr Platz dafür gibt.33Geier und Schakale werden sich über die Leichen dieses Volkes hermachen und niemand wird sie verscheuchen.34Ich mache allem Jubel und aller Freude in den Städten von Juda und auf den Straßen Jerusalems ein Ende; den Jubelruf von Bräutigam und Braut wird man dort nicht mehr hören, denn das Land wird ein einziges Trümmerfeld sein.« (Jer 16:9; Jer 25:10; Jer 33:10; Re 18:23; Bar 2:23)
