1‘Shout it aloud, do not hold back. Raise your voice like a trumpet. Declare to my people their rebellion and to the descendants of Jacob their sins.2For day after day they seek me out; they seem eager to know my ways, as if they were a nation that does what is right and has not forsaken the commands of its God. They ask me for just decisions and seem eager for God to come near them.3“Why have we fasted,” they say, “and you have not seen it? Why have we humbled ourselves, and you have not noticed?” ‘Yet on the day of your fasting, you do as you please and exploit all your workers.4Your fasting ends in quarrelling and strife, and in striking each other with wicked fists. You cannot fast as you do today and expect your voice to be heard on high.5Is this the kind of fast I have chosen, only a day for people to humble themselves? Is it only for bowing one’s head like a reed and for lying in sackcloth and ashes? Is that what you call a fast, a day acceptable to the Lord?6‘Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke?7Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter – when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?8Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness[1] will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.9Then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: here am I. ‘If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk,10and if you spend yourselves on behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.11The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.12Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins and will raise up the age-old foundations; you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls, Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.13‘If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath and from doing as you please on my holy day, if you call the Sabbath a delight and the Lord’s holy day honourable, and if you honour it by not going your own way and not doing as you please or speaking idle words,14then you will find your joy in the Lord, and I will cause you to ride in triumph on the heights of the land and to feast on the inheritance of your father Jacob.’ For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.

Halte meinem Volk, den Nachkommen Jakobs, ihr Unrecht und ihre Vergehen vor!2Sie fragen mich Tag für Tag, warum ich sie solche Wege führe. Wie ein Volk, das sich an das Recht hält und meine Gebote befolgt, fordern sie von mir, dass ich zu ihrer Rettung eingreife, und wünschen sich, dass ich ihnen nahe bin.3›Was für einen Sinn hat es‹, jammern sie, ›dass wir Fasttage abhalten und deinetwegen Entbehrungen auf uns nehmen? Du beachtest es ja gar nicht!‹ Darauf sage ich, der HERR: Seht doch, was ihr an euren Fasttagen tut! Ihr geht euren Geschäften nach und beutet eure Arbeiter aus.4Ihr fastet zwar, aber ihr seid zugleich streitsüchtig und schlagt sofort mit der Faust drein. Darum kann euer Gebet nicht zu mir gelangen.5Ist das vielleicht ein Fasttag, wie ich ihn liebe, wenn ihr auf Essen und Trinken verzichtet, euren Kopf hängen lasst und euch im Sack in die Asche setzt? Nennt ihr das ein Fasten, das mir gefällt? (2Sa 12:16; Ezr 10:6; Ne 1:4; Ne 9:1; Es 4:3; Es 4:16; Da 9:3; Da 10:2; Joe 1:13; Joe 2:15; Jon 3:5; Jdt 9:1)6Nein, ein Fasten, wie ich es haben will, sieht anders aus! Löst die Fesseln der Gefangenen, nehmt das drückende Joch von ihrem Hals, gebt den Misshandelten die Freiheit und macht jeder Unterdrückung ein Ende! (Ne 5:1)7Ladet die Hungernden an euren Tisch,[1] nehmt die Obdachlosen in euer Haus auf, gebt denen, die in Lumpen herumlaufen,[2] etwas zum Anziehen und helft allen in eurem Volk, die Hilfe brauchen! (De 15:7; Eze 18:7; Mt 25:35)8Dann strahlt euer Glück auf wie die Sonne am Morgen und eure Wunden heilen schnell; eure guten Taten gehen euch voran und meine Herrlichkeit folgt euch als starker Schutz. (Isa 52:12)9Dann werdet ihr zu mir rufen und ich werde euch antworten; wenn ihr um Hilfe schreit, werde ich sagen: ›Hier bin ich!‹ Wenn ihr aufhört, andere zu unterdrücken, mit dem Finger spöttisch auf sie zu zeigen und schlecht über sie zu reden, (Isa 65:24)10wenn ihr den Hungernden zu essen gebt und euch den Notleidenden zuwendet, dann wird eure Dunkelheit hell werden, rings um euch her wird das Licht strahlen wie am Mittag.11Ich, der HERR, werde euch immer und überall führen, auch im dürren Land werde ich euch satt machen und euch meine Kraft geben. Ihr werdet wie ein Garten sein, der immer genug Wasser hat, und wie eine Quelle, die niemals versiegt. (Jer 31:12)12Was seit langer Zeit in Trümmern liegt, werdet ihr wieder aufbauen; auf den alten Fundamenten werdet ihr alles von Neuem errichten. Man wird euch das Volk nennen, das die Lücken in den Stadtmauern schließt und die Stadt wieder bewohnbar macht.« (Ne 2:16; Isa 61:4)
Der Segen der Sabbatheiligung
13Der HERR sagt: »Achtet den Sabbat als einen heiligen Tag, der mir gehört! Entehrt ihn nicht dadurch, dass ihr euren Beschäftigungen nachgeht. Entweiht ihn nicht durch Reisen oder durch Arbeit oder irgendwelche Geschäfte. Betrachtet ihn nicht als eine Last, sondern als einen Anlass zur Freude! (Isa 56:2)14Dann werde ich selbst die Quelle eurer Freude sein. Über alle Hindernisse lasse ich euch triumphieren und ihr könnt den Ertrag des Landes genießen, das ich eurem Stammvater Jakob gegeben habe.« Der HERR hat das gesagt. (Ps 37:4)
