1 Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘See, I have made you like God to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron will be your prophet. 2 You are to say everything I command you, and your brother Aaron is to tell Pharaoh to let the Israelites go out of his country. 3 But I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and though I multiply my signs and wonders in Egypt, 4 he will not listen to you. Then I will lay my hand on Egypt and with mighty acts of judgment I will bring out my divisions, my people the Israelites. 5 And the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I stretch out my hand against Egypt and bring the Israelites out of it.’ 6 Moses and Aaron did just as the Lord commanded them. 7 Moses was eighty years old and Aaron eighty-three when they spoke to Pharaoh.

Aaron’s staff becomes a snake

8 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 9 ‘When Pharaoh says to you, “Perform a miracle,” then say to Aaron, “Take your staff and throw it down before Pharaoh,” and it will become a snake.’ 10 So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the Lord commanded. Aaron threw his staff down in front of Pharaoh and his officials, and it became a snake. 11 Pharaoh then summoned the wise men and sorcerers, and the Egyptian magicians also did the same things by their secret arts: 12 each one threw down his staff and it became a snake. But Aaron’s staff swallowed up their staffs. 13 Yet Pharaoh’s heart became hard and he would not listen to them, just as the Lord had said.

The plague of blood

14 Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Pharaoh’s heart is unyielding; he refuses to let the people go. 15 Go to Pharaoh in the morning as he goes out to the river. Confront him on the bank of the Nile, and take in your hand the staff that was changed into a snake. 16 Then say to him, “The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has sent me to say to you: Let my people go, so that they may worship me in the wilderness. But until now you have not listened. 17 This is what the Lord says: by this you will know that I am the Lord: with the staff that is in my hand I will strike the water of the Nile, and it will be changed into blood. 18 The fish in the Nile will die, and the river will stink; the Egyptians will not be able to drink its water.” ’ 19 The Lord said to Moses, ‘Tell Aaron, “Take your staff and stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt – over the streams and canals, over the ponds and all the reservoirs – and they will turn to blood.” Blood will be everywhere in Egypt, even in vessels^[1] of wood and stone.’ 20 Moses and Aaron did just as the Lord had commanded. He raised his staff in the presence of Pharaoh and his officials and struck the water of the Nile, and all the water was changed into blood. 21 The fish in the Nile died, and the river smelled so bad that the Egyptians could not drink its water. Blood was everywhere in Egypt. 22 But the Egyptian magicians did the same things by their secret arts, and Pharaoh’s heart became hard; he would not listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the Lord had said. 23 Instead, he turned and went into his palace, and did not take even this to heart. 24 And all the Egyptians dug along the Nile to get drinking water, because they could not drink the water of the river.

1 Darauf sagte der HERR zu Mose: »Ich bevollmächtige dich, vor den Pharao hinzutreten, als wärst du Gott, und dein Bruder Aaron wird dein Prophet sein. (Ex 4:15) 2 Du sagst Aaron alles, was ich dir auftrage, und er fordert dann vom Pharao, dass er die Israeliten aus seinem Land ziehen lässt. 3 Ich werde jedoch den Pharao starrsinnig machen, damit ich umso mehr meine Macht durch staunenerregende Wundertaten erweisen kann. 4 Der Pharao wird eure Forderung ablehnen, und dann werden die Ägypter meine Hand zu spüren bekommen. Durch schwere Strafgerichte werde ich es so weit bringen, dass ich mein Volk, die Israeliten, aus Ägypten führen kann. 5 Wenn ich so meine Hand gegen die Ägypter erhebe und das Volk Israel mitten aus ihrem Land wegführe, dann werden die Ägypter erkennen, dass ich der HERR bin.« 6 Mose und Aaron folgten genau den Anweisungen des HERRN. 7 Mose war damals 80 und Aaron 83 Jahre alt. 8 Der HERR sagte zu Mose und Aaron: 9 »Wenn euch der Pharao auffordert, euch durch ein Wunder auszuweisen, dann sagst du, Mose, zu Aaron: ›Nimm deinen Stock und wirf ihn vor dem Pharao auf den Boden!‹ Dann wird er zu einer Schlange werden.« (Ex 4:3) 10 Mose und Aaron gingen zum Pharao und taten, was ihnen der HERR aufgetragen hatte. Aaron warf seinen Stock vor dem Pharao und seinen Ministern auf den Boden und er wurde zur Schlange. 11 Aber der Pharao rief seine Magier und Beschwörer, und sie vollbrachten mit ihren Zauberkünsten dasselbe. 12 Jeder von ihnen warf seinen Stock auf den Boden und er wurde zu einer Schlange. Doch Aarons Stock verschlang die Stöcke der Ägypter. 13 Trotzdem blieb der Pharao starrsinnig und schlug ihre Forderung ab, genau wie der HERR es vorausgesagt hatte. (Ex 4:21)

Erste Plage: Wasser wird Blut

14 Darauf sagte der HERR zu Mose: »Der Pharao ist trotzig; er weigert sich, das Volk ziehen zu lassen. (Ps 78:44; Ps 105:29; Wis 11:6) 15 Geh morgen früh zu ihm, wenn er gerade zum Nil hinuntergeht, und tritt ihm am Ufer des Flusses entgegen. Nimm den Stock mit, der sich in eine Schlange verwandelt hat. 16 Dann sag zum Pharao: ›Der HERR, der Gott der Hebräer, hat mich zu dir geschickt und fordert dich auf: Lass mein Volk in die Wüste ziehen, damit es mir dort Opfer darbringen kann! Bis jetzt hast du nicht darauf gehört. 17 Aber jetzt sollst du erkennen, dass du es mit dem HERRN zu tun hast. In seinem Auftrag werde ich mit dem Stock in meiner Hand in das Wasser des Nils schlagen und es wird zu Blut werden. 18 Alle Fische werden sterben und der Fluss wird so sehr stinken, dass die Ägypter nicht mehr von seinem Wasser trinken können.‹« 19 Weiter sagte der HERR zu Mose: »Aaron soll seinen Stock ausstrecken über alle Gewässer Ägyptens, über die Flüsse und Kanäle, die Teiche und alle Wasserstellen. Alles Wasser in Ägypten wird dann zu Blut werden, sogar in den Gefäßen aus Holz und Stein.« 20 Mose und Aaron taten, was der HERR ihnen befohlen hatte. Vor den Augen des Pharaos und seiner Minister erhob Mose^[1] seinen Stock und schlug in das Wasser des Nils. Da wurde alles Wasser im Strom in Blut verwandelt. (Re 8:8; Re 16:3) 21 Die Fische starben und das Wasser begann so sehr zu stinken, dass die Ägypter es nicht mehr trinken konnten. Im ganzen Land war das Wasser zu Blut geworden. 22 Aber die ägyptischen Magier brachten mit ihren Zauberkünsten dasselbe fertig. Deshalb blieb der Pharao starrsinnig und ließ das Volk nicht ziehen, genau wie der HERR es vorausgesagt hatte. (Ex 4:21) 23 Der Pharao ging in seinen Palast zurück und nahm auch diesen Machterweis des HERRN nicht ernst. 24 Die Ägypter aber gruben an den Ufern des Nils nach Trinkwasser, denn das Nilwasser war ungenießbar geworden.

Zweite Plage: Frösche

25 Sieben Tage waren vergangen, seit der HERR den Nil verseucht hatte. 26 Da sagte der HERR zu Mose: »Geh zum Pharao und sage zu ihm: ›So spricht der HERR: Lass mein Volk ziehen, damit es mir Opfer darbringen kann! 27 Wenn du dich weigerst, werde ich über dein ganzes Land eine Froschplage hereinbrechen lassen. (Ps 78:45; Ps 105:30; Wis 16:3; Wis 19:10)

28 Im Nil wird es von Fröschen wimmeln und sie werden das Wasser verlassen und in deinen Palast kommen, sogar in dein Schlafzimmer und auf dein Bett. Auch in die Häuser deiner Minister und deines ganzen Volkes werden sie eindringen und werden sich in die Backtröge und Backöfen setzen. 29 Dich und alle deine Untertanen wird diese Froschplage treffen.‹«
