The plague of locusts

1 Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Go to Pharaoh, for I have hardened his heart and the hearts of his officials so that I may perform these signs of mine among them 2 that you may tell your children and grandchildren how I dealt harshly with the Egyptians and how I performed my signs among them, and that you may know that I am the Lord.’ 3 So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said to him, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of the Hebrews, says: “How long will you refuse to humble yourself before me? Let my people go, so that they may worship me. 4 If you refuse to let them go, I will bring locusts into your country tomorrow. 5 They will cover the face of the ground so that it cannot be seen. They will devour what little you have left after the hail, including every tree that is growing in your fields. 6 They will fill your houses and those of all your officials and all the Egyptians – something neither your parents nor your ancestors have ever seen from the day they settled in this land till now.” ’ Then Moses turned and left Pharaoh. 7 Pharaoh’s officials said to him, ‘How long will this man be a snare to us? Let the people go, so that they may worship the Lord their God. Do you not yet realise that Egypt is ruined?’ 8 Then Moses and Aaron were brought back to Pharaoh. ‘Go, worship the Lord your God,’ he said. ‘But tell me who will be going.’ 9 Moses answered, ‘We will go with our young and our old, with our sons and our daughters, and with our flocks and herds, because we are to celebrate a festival to the Lord.’ 10 Pharaoh said, ‘The Lord be with you – if I let you go, along with your women and children! Clearly you are bent on evil.^[1] 11 No! Let only the men go and worship the Lord, since that’s what you have been asking for.’ Then Moses and Aaron were driven out of Pharaoh’s presence. 12 And the Lord said to Moses, ‘Stretch out your hand over Egypt so that locusts swarm over the land and devour everything growing in the fields, everything left by the hail.’ 13 So Moses stretched out his staff over Egypt, and the Lord made an east wind blow across the land all that day and all that night. By morning the wind had brought the locusts; 14 they invaded all Egypt and settled down in every area of the country in great numbers. Never before had there been such a plague of locusts, nor will there ever be again. 15 They covered all the ground until it was black. They devoured all that was left after the hail – everything growing in the fields and the fruit on the trees. Nothing green remained on tree or plant in all the land of Egypt. 16 Pharaoh quickly summoned Moses and Aaron and said, ‘I have sinned against the Lord your God and against you. 17 Now forgive my sin once more and pray to the Lord your God to take this deadly plague away from me.’ 18 Moses then left Pharaoh and prayed to the Lord. 19 And the Lord changed the wind to a very strong west wind, which caught up the locusts and carried them into the Red Sea.^[2] Not a locust was left anywhere in Egypt. 20 But the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he would not let the Israelites go.

The plague of darkness

21 Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Stretch out your hand towards the sky so that darkness spreads over Egypt – darkness that can be felt.’ 22 So Moses stretched out his hand towards the sky, and total darkness covered all Egypt for three days. 23 No-one could see anyone else or move about for three days. Yet all the Israelites had light in the places where they lived. 24 Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and said, ‘Go, worship the Lord. Even your women and children may go with you; only leave your flocks and herds behind.’ 25 But Moses said, ‘You must allow us to have sacrifices and burnt offerings to present to the Lord our God. 26 Our livestock too must go with us; not a hoof is to be left behind. We have to use some of them in worshipping the Lord our God, and until we get there we will not know what we are to use to worship the Lord.’ 27 But the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he was not willing to let them go. 28 Pharaoh said to Moses, ‘Get out of my sight! Make sure you do not appear before me again! The day you see my face you will die.’ 29 ‘Just as you say,’ Moses replied. ‘I will never appear before you again.’

Der Pharao bleibt hart

1 Nun sagte der HERR zu Mose: »Geh zum Pharao! Ich selbst habe ihn und seine Minister so trotzig gemacht, damit ich alle diese Wunder unter ihnen vollbringen konnte 2 und damit du deinen Kindern und Enkeln erzählen kannst, wie ich den Ägyptern meine Macht gezeigt habe. Denn daran sollt ihr erkennen, dass ich der HERR bin.« (De 4:9; Jos 4:6; Ps 22:31; Ps 71:18)

3 Mose und Aaron gingen wieder zum Pharao und sagten zu ihm: »So spricht der HERR, der Gott der Hebräer: ›Wie lange sträubst du dich noch, meine Macht anzuerkennen? Lass mein Volk ziehen, damit es mir Opfer darbringen kann! 4 Sonst lasse ich morgen Heuschrecken in dein Land einfallen. 5 Sie werden das ganze Land bedecken, sodass der Boden nicht mehr zu sehen ist. Alles Grün, das der Hagel übrig gelassen hat, werden sie auffressen, auf den Feldern und an den Bäumen. 6 Auch in deinen Palästen und in den Häusern deiner Minister und aller Ägypter wird es von Heuschrecken wimmeln. Solange deine Vorfahren auch schon in diesem Land wohnen – solch eine Katastrophe haben sie nicht erlebt.‹« Nachdem Mose das gesagt hatte, verließ er den Pharao. 7 Da sagten die Minister zum Pharao: »Wie lange wollen wir uns noch solchen Gefahren aussetzen? Lass die Leute ziehen und dem HERRN, ihrem Gott, ihre Opfer darbringen! Siehst du denn nicht, dass Ägypten zugrunde geht?« 8 Darauf wurden Mose und Aaron zum Pharao zurückgeholt. »Geht und bringt dem HERRN, eurem Gott, eure Opfer!«, sagte der Pharao zu ihnen. Aber dann fragte er: »Wer soll denn mitgehen?« 9 Mose antwortete: »Alle, die Jungen und die Alten, unsere Söhne und Töchter, unsere Schafe, Ziegen und Rinder. So gehört es sich, wenn wir ein Fest für den HERRN feiern.« 10 Der Pharao spottete: »Der HERR gebe seinen Segen dazu! Ich denke nicht daran, eure Frauen, Kinder und Alten mitgehen zu lassen! Es ist doch klar, was ihr im Schilde führt! 11 Wenn ihr wirklich dem HERRN Opfer darbringen wollt und sonst nichts, dann genügt es, wenn die Männer gehen.« Und der Pharao ließ Mose und Aaron hinauswerfen.

Achte Plage: Heuschrecken

12 Da sagte der HERR zu Mose: »Streck deine Hand aus über Ägypten, um die Heuschrecken herbeizurufen. Sie sollen das Grün, das der Hagel übrig gelassen hat, bis auf den letzten Rest auffressen.« (Ps 78:46; Ps 105:34; Re 9:1; Wis 16:9)

13 Mose streckte seinen Stock über Ägypten aus, und der HERR ließ den ganzen Tag und die ganze Nacht einen Ostwind wehen. Als der Morgen kam, waren die Heuschrecken da. 14 Sie fielen in ganz Ägypten ein und ließen sich in riesigen Schwärmen nieder. Eine so große Menge Heuschrecken wurde noch nie gesehen, und man wird sie auch nie wieder zu sehen bekommen. 15 Der ganze Boden war bedeckt, das Land war schwarz von Heuschrecken. Sie fraßen alle Pflanzen, auch die Früchte an den Bäumen, alles, was der Hagel verschont hatte. Weder auf den Bäumen noch am Boden ließen sie irgendetwas Grünes übrig. 16 Der Pharao ließ in aller Eile Mose und Aaron rufen. Er bekannte: »Ich bin vor dem HERRN, eurem Gott, schuldig geworden und auch vor euch. (Ex 9:27) 17 Vergebt mir nur noch dies eine Mal meine Schuld! Bittet den HERRN, euren Gott, dass er dieses tödliche Verderben abwendet!« 18 Als Mose vom Pharao weggegangen war, betete er zum HERRN. 19 Da ließ der HERR den Wind drehen und in einen starken Westwind umschlagen. Der nahm die Heuschrecken mit und wehte sie ins Rote Meer; in ganz Ägypten blieb nicht eine Heuschrecke übrig. 20 Aber der HERR machte den Pharao auch jetzt wieder starrsinnig, sodass er das Volk nicht ziehen ließ. (Ex 4:21)

Neunte Plage: Finsternis

21 Darauf sagte der HERR zu Mose: »Streck deine Hand zum Himmel aus, und es wird eine Finsternis über Ägypten kommen, so dicht, dass sie mit den Händen zu greifen ist.« (Ps 105:28; Re 16:10; Wis 17:1) 22 Da erhob Mose seine Hand, und drei Tage lang wurde es in Ägypten stockfinster. 23 Die Ägypter konnten einander nicht sehen, und drei Tage lang verließ niemand sein Haus. Nur wo die Israeliten wohnten, blieb es hell. 24 Der Pharao ließ Mose rufen und sagte: »Geht und bringt dem HERRN eure Opfer! Auch eure Familien könnt ihr mitnehmen; nur die Schafe, Ziegen und Rinder müsst ihr hierlassen.« 25 Mose erwiderte: »Wirst vielleicht du uns Tiere zur Verfügung stellen, die wir dem HERRN, unserem Gott, als Brandopfer und Mahlopfer darbringen können? 26 Nein, auch unser Vieh muss mit uns gehen! Kein einziges Tier bleibt zurück. Erst wenn wir an Ort und Stelle sind, können wir wissen, welche Tiere wir zum Opfer für den HERRN, unseren Gott, brauchen.« 27 Da machte der HERR den Pharao von Neuem starrsinnig, sodass er das Volk Israel nicht ziehen ließ. (Ex 4:21) 28 Der Pharao sagte zu Mose: »Verschwinde! Wenn du mir noch einmal unter die Augen kommst, bist du ein toter Mann.« 29 »Wie du sagst!«, erwiderte Mose. »Ich werde dir nie wieder unter die Augen kommen.«
