1 The war between the house of Saul and the house of David lasted a long time. David grew stronger and stronger, while the house of Saul grew weaker and weaker. 2 Sons were born to David in Hebron: his firstborn was Amnon the son of Ahinoam of Jezreel; 3 his second, Kileab the son of Abigail the widow of Nabal of Carmel; the third, Absalom the son of Maakah daughter of Talmai king of Geshur; 4 the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith; the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital; 5 and the sixth, Ithream the son of David’s wife Eglah. These were born to David in Hebron.

Abner goes over to David

6 During the war between the house of Saul and the house of David, Abner had been strengthening his own position in the house of Saul. 7 Now Saul had had a concubine named Rizpah daughter of Aiah. And Ish-Bosheth said to Abner, ‘Why did you sleep with my father’s concubine?’ 8 Abner was very angry because of what Ish-Bosheth said. So he answered, ‘Am I a dog’s head – on Judah’s side? This very day I am loyal to the house of your father Saul and to his family and friends. I haven’t handed you over to David. Yet now you accuse me of an offence involving this woman! 9 May God deal with Abner, be it ever so severely, if I do not do for David what the Lord promised him on oath 10 and transfer the kingdom from the house of Saul and establish David’s throne over Israel and Judah from Dan to Beersheba.’ 11 Ish-Bosheth did not dare to say another word to Abner, because he was afraid of him. 12 Then Abner sent messengers on his behalf to say to David, ‘Whose land is it? Make an agreement with me, and I will help you bring all Israel over to you.’ 13 ‘Good,’ said David. ‘I will make an agreement with you. But I demand one thing of you: do not come into my presence unless you bring Michal daughter of Saul when you come to see me.’ 14 Then David sent messengers to Ish-Bosheth son of Saul, demanding, ‘Give me my wife Michal, whom I betrothed to myself for the price of a hundred Philistine foreskins.’ 15 So Ish-Bosheth gave orders and had her taken away from her husband Paltiel son of Laish. 16 Her husband, however, went with her, weeping behind her all the way to Bahurim. Then Abner said to him, ‘Go back home!’ So he went back. 17 Abner conferred with the elders of Israel and said, ‘For some time you have wanted to make David your king. 18 Now do it! For the Lord promised David, “By my servant David I will rescue my people Israel from the hand of the Philistines and from the hand of all their enemies.” ’ 19 Abner also spoke to the Benjaminites in person. Then he went to Hebron to tell David everything that Israel and the whole tribe of Benjamin wanted to do. 20 When Abner, who had twenty men with him, came to David at Hebron, David prepared a feast for him and his men. 21 Then Abner said to David, ‘Let me go at once and assemble all Israel for my lord the king, so that they may make a covenant with you, and that you may rule over all that your heart desires.’ So David sent Abner away, and he went in peace.

Joab murders Abner

22 Just then David’s men and Joab returned from a raid and brought with them a great deal of plunder. But Abner was no longer with David in Hebron, because David had sent him away, and he had gone in peace. 23 When Joab and all the soldiers with him arrived, he was told that Abner son of Ner had come to the king and that the king had sent him away and that he had gone in peace. 24 So Joab went to the king and said, ‘What have you done? Look, Abner came to you. Why did you let him go? Now he is gone! 25 You know Abner son of Ner; he came to deceive you and observe your movements and find out everything you are doing.’ 26 Joab then left David and sent messengers after Abner, and they brought him back from the cistern at Sirah. But David did not know it. 27 Now when Abner returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into an inner chamber, as if to speak with him privately. And there, to avenge the blood of his brother Asahel, Joab stabbed him in the stomach, and he died. 28 Later, when David heard about this, he said, ‘I and my kingdom are for ever innocent before the Lord concerning the blood of Abner son of Ner. 29 May his blood fall on the head of Joab and on his whole family! May Joab’s family never be without someone who has a running sore or leprosy^[1] or who leans on a crutch or who falls by the sword or who lacks food.’ 30 (Joab and his brother Abishai murdered Abner because he had killed their brother Asahel in the battle of Gibeon.) 31 Then David said to Joab and all the people with him, ‘Tear your clothes and put on sackcloth and walk in mourning in front of Abner.’ King David himself walked behind the bier. 32 They buried Abner in Hebron, and the king wept aloud at Abner’s tomb. All the people wept also. 33 The king sang this lament for Abner: ‘Should Abner have died as the lawless die? 34 Your hands were not bound, your feet were not fettered. You fell as one falls before the wicked.’ And all the people wept over him again. 35 Then they all came and urged David to eat something while it was still day; but David took an oath, saying, ‘May God deal with me, be it ever so severely, if I taste bread or anything else before the sun sets!’ 36 All the people took note and were pleased; indeed, everything the king did pleased them. 37 So on that day all the people there and all Israel knew that the king had no part in the murder of Abner son of Ner. 38 Then the king said to his men, ‘Do you not realise that a commander and a great man has fallen in Israel this day? 39 And today, though I am the anointed king, I am weak, and these sons of Zeruiah are too strong for me. May the Lord repay the evildoer according to his evil deeds!’

2 In Hebron wurden David nacheinander die folgenden Söhne geboren: als Erstgeborener Amnon, seine Mutter war Ahinoam aus Jesreel; (1Sa 25:42) 3 als zweiter Kilab, seine Mutter war Abigajil, die Witwe Nabals aus Karmel; als dritter Abschalom, seine Mutter war Maacha, die Tochter des Königs Talmai von Geschur; 4 als vierter Adonija, seine Mutter war Haggit; als fünfter Schefatja, seine Mutter war Abital; 5 als sechster Jitream, seine Mutter war Davids Frau Egla. Diese Söhne wurden David in Hebron geboren.

Der Konflikt zwischen Isch-Boschet und seinem Heerführer Abner

6 Während des Krieges zwischen den Anhängern Sauls und den Anhängern Davids erwies sich Abner als unentbehrliche Stütze für das Königshaus Sauls. 7 Nun hatte Saul eine Nebenfrau gehabt, Rizpa, die Tochter von Aja. Eines Tages stellte Isch-Boschet Abner zur Rede und sagte: »Warum hast du mit der Nebenfrau meines Vaters geschlafen?« (2Sa 21:8) 8 Über diese Frage wurde Abner ganz wütend; er schrie: »Bin ich denn ein ehrloser Verräter? Meinst du, ich halte es mit Juda? Ich tue bis heute alles, was ich kann, für das Königshaus Sauls, für seine ganze Familie und alle seine Freunde; ich bewahre dich davor, dass du David in die Hände fällst – und du machst mir jetzt eine Szene wegen so einer lächerlichen Geschichte! 9 Gott soll mich strafen, wenn ich nicht dafür sorge, dass genau das eintrifft, was er David mit einem Eid versprochen hat! 10 Denn das hat der HERR gesagt: ›Ich werde der Familie Sauls das Königtum wegnehmen und David zum König über Israel und Juda machen, über das ganze Land von Dan bis Beerscheba!‹« (1Sa 24:21) 11 Isch-Boschet bekam solche Angst vor Abner, dass er ihm kein Wort erwidern konnte.

Abner verhandelt mit David

12 Darauf schickte Abner in eigener Sache Boten zu David und ließ ihm sagen: »Wem steht denn dieses Land zu? Hier mein Vorschlag: Schließ einen Vertrag mit mir, und ich werde alles für dich tun, damit ganz Israel zu dir übergeht!« 13 David antwortete: »Gut, ich schließe einen Vertrag mit dir, aber nur unter einer Bedingung: Lass dich nicht vor mir sehen, ohne dass du mir Sauls Tochter Michal mitbringst, wenn du zu mir kommst!« 14 Gleichzeitig sandte er Boten zu Isch-Boschet und ließ ihm sagen: »Gib mir meine Frau Michal heraus, für die ich als Brautpreis hundert Philistervorhäute bezahlt habe!« (1Sa 18:27) 15 Isch-Boschet schickte nach ihr und ließ sie von ihrem Mann Paltiël, dem Sohn Lajischs, wegholen. (1Sa 25:44) 16 Ihr Mann ging mit ihr und lief weinend hinter ihr her bis nach Bahurim. Erst als Abner ihn anfuhr: »Geh endlich heim!«, kehrte er um. 17 Abner hatte zuvor mit den Ältesten der Stämme Israels gesprochen und zu ihnen gesagt: »Schon lange wolltet ihr doch David zum König über euch haben. 18 Jetzt ist es Zeit zu handeln. Der HERR selbst hat ja von ihm gesagt: ›Durch meinen Diener David will ich mein Volk Israel aus der Gewalt der Philister und aller seiner Feinde retten.‹« 19 Abner sprach auch mit den Männern des Stammes Benjamin. Dann ging er nach Hebron, um David mitzuteilen, dass die Leute von Israel und der ganze Stamm Benjamin ihn als König haben wollten. 20 Als Abner in Begleitung von zwanzig Männern nach Hebron kam, gab David ein Festessen für sie. 21 Danach sagte Abner zu David: »Ich gehe jetzt und werde dir als meinem Herrn und König alle Stämme Israels zuführen. Sie werden einen Vertrag mit dir schließen und du wirst ihr König sein, ganz wie es deinem Willen entspricht.« David verabschiedete Abner und er ging in Frieden weg.

Joab rächt sich an Abner

22 Nicht lange danach kehrte Joab mit den Kriegsleuten Davids von einem Streifzug zurück. Sie brachten reiche Beute mit. Abner befand sich zu diesem Zeitpunkt nicht mehr bei David in Hebron; der König hatte ihn schon verabschiedet und er war in Frieden weggegangen. 23 Kaum war Joab mit der Truppe in Hebron angekommen, erzählte man ihm auch schon: »Abner, der Sohn Ners, war beim König und der hat ihn in Frieden ziehen lassen!« 24 Da ging Joab sofort zum König und stellte ihn zur Rede: »Was hast du da gemacht? Abner ist zu dir gekommen und du hast ihn einfach wieder ziehen lassen! 25 Du musst ihn doch kennen! Er ist nur gekommen, um dich zu täuschen; er will ausspionieren, was du vorhast.« 26 Als Joab vom König herauskam, schickte er Boten hinter Abner her, um ihn zurückzurufen. David wusste nichts davon. Die Boten holten Abner bei der Zisterne von Sira ein 27 und er kehrte um nach Hebron. Joab führte ihn beiseite in das Innere des Tores, als wolle er unter vier Augen mit ihm reden. Doch dort stieß er ihm einen Dolch in den Unterleib, sodass er starb. So rächte sich Joab dafür, dass Abner seinen Bruder Asaël getötet hatte. (2Sa 2:23; 2Sa 20:10)

David distanziert sich von Joabs Tat

28 Als David wenig später davon erfuhr, rief er: »Mich und mein Königtum trifft auf ewig keine Schuld vor dem HERRN am Tod von Abner! 29 Joab allein ist dafür verantwortlich, er und seine ganze Familie sollen dafür büßen. Unter seinen Nachkommen soll es zu allen Zeiten Leute geben, die an Aussatz oder krankhaften Ausflüssen leiden, an Krücken gehen, gewaltsam umkommen oder Hunger leiden!« (1Ki 2:34) 30 – Joab und Abischai hatten Abner umgebracht, weil er ihren Bruder Asaël in der Schlacht bei Gibeon getötet hatte. – 31 Darauf befahl David Joab und allen seinen Männern: »Zerreißt eure Kleider, legt den Sack an und geht im Trauerzug vor Abner her!« Der König selbst ging hinter der Bahre. 32 So bestatteten sie Abner in Hebron. Der König weinte laut an seinem Grab und alle weinten mit ihm. 33 Dann sang er für Abner ein Klagelied: »Abner, musstest du denn wie ein Nichtsnutz sterben? (2Sa 1:17) 34 Deine Hände waren nicht gefesselt, deine Füße lagen nicht in Eisen! Warum fandest du ein solches Ende, Abner, wie von Mörderhand erschlagen?« Als die Leute das hörten, weinten sie noch mehr. 35 Später redeten sie David zu, er solle doch am Trauermahl teilnehmen; aber weil der Tag noch nicht zu Ende war, schwor er: »Gott soll mich strafen, wenn ich einen Bissen anrühre, bevor die Sonne untergegangen ist!« 36 Alle waren Zeugen davon und es gefiel ihnen gut, wie überhaupt alles, was er tat, den Beifall des ganzen Volkes hatte. 37 Alle, die dabei waren, erkannten an diesem Tag, dass der König nichts mit dem Mord an Abner zu tun hatte. Auch in ganz Israel sprach sich das herum. 38 Zu seinen Hofleuten sagte David: »Ihr seid euch doch klar darüber, dass heute ein bedeutender und mächtiger Mann in Israel umgekommen ist? 39 Ich bin zwar zum König gesalbt, aber ich bin noch zu schwach, um so etwas zu verhindern. Diesen Söhnen der Zeruja bin ich nicht gewachsen. Der HERR möge den Schuldigen bestrafen, wie er es verdient hat!« (1Sa 26:6; 2Sa 2:18; 2Sa 16:9; 2Sa 19:23)
