1Solomon made an alliance with Pharaoh king of Egypt and married his daughter. He brought her to the City of David until he finished building his palace and the temple of the Lord, and the wall around Jerusalem.2The people, however, were still sacrificing at the high places, because a temple had not yet been built for the Name of the Lord.3Solomon showed his love for the Lord by walking according to the instructions given him by his father David, except that he offered sacrifices and burned incense on the high places.4The king went to Gibeon to offer sacrifices, for that was the most important high place, and Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings on that altar.5At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon during the night in a dream, and God said, ‘Ask for whatever you want me to give you.’6Solomon answered, ‘You have shown great kindness to your servant, my father David, because he was faithful to you and righteous and upright in heart. You have continued this great kindness to him and have given him a son to sit on his throne this very day.7‘Now, Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David. But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties.8Your servant is here among the people you have chosen, a great people, too numerous to count or number.9So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?’10The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for this.11So God said to him, ‘Since you have asked for this and not for long life or wealth for yourself, nor have asked for the death of your enemies but for discernment in administering justice,12I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be.13Moreover, I will give you what you have not asked for – both wealth and honour – so that in your lifetime you will have no equal among kings.14And if you walk in obedience to me and keep my decrees and commands as David your father did, I will give you a long life.’15Then Solomon awoke – and he realised it had been a dream. He returned to Jerusalem, stood before the ark of the Lord’s covenant and sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. Then he gave a feast for all his court.
A wise ruling
16Now two prostitutes came to the king and stood before him.17One of them said, ‘Pardon me, my lord. This woman and I live in the same house. I had a baby while she was there with me.18The third day after my child was born, this woman also had a baby. We were alone; there was no-one in the house but the two of us.19‘During the night this woman’s son died because she lay on him.20So she got up in the middle of the night and took my son from my side while I your servant was asleep. She put him by her breast and put her dead son by my breast.21The next morning, I got up to nurse my son – and he was dead! But when I looked at him closely in the morning light, I saw that it wasn’t the son I had borne.’22The other woman said, ‘No! The living one is my son; the dead one is yours.’ But the first one insisted, ‘No! The dead one is yours; the living one is mine.’ And so they argued before the king.23The king said, ‘This one says, “My son is alive and your son is dead,” while that one says, “No! Your son is dead and mine is alive.” ’24Then the king said, ‘Bring me a sword.’ So they brought a sword for the king.25He then gave an order: ‘Cut the living child in two and give half to one and half to the other.’26The woman whose son was alive was deeply moved out of love for her son and said to the king, ‘Please, my lord, give her the living baby! Don’t kill him!’ But the other said, ‘Neither I nor you shall have him. Cut him in two!’27Then the king gave his ruling: ‘Give the living baby to the first woman. Do not kill him; she is his mother.’28When all Israel heard the verdict the king had given, they held the king in awe, because they saw that he had wisdom from God to administer justice.

Salomo darf sich etwas wünschen
2Weil damals noch kein Tempel für den HERRN[1] gebaut war, brachte das Volk dem HERRN seine Opfer an den Opferstätten rings im Land. (1Ki 15:14; 1Ki 22:44; 2Ki 12:4; 2Ki 14:4; 2Ki 15:4; 2Ki 15:35; 2Ki 16:4; 2Ki 18:4; 2Ch 1:3)3Salomo liebte den HERRN und befolgte seine Gebote, wie es sein Vater David getan hatte; aber auch er opferte an diesen Opferstätten.4Einmal ging der König nach Gibeon, um ein Opferfest zu feiern. Dort war die bedeutendste Opferstätte im ganzen Land. Salomo opferte auf dem Altar tausend Tiere als Brandopfer. (Wis 8:21)5Als er im Heiligtum übernachtete, erschien ihm der HERR im Traum und sagte zu ihm: »Wünsche dir, was du willst; ich will es dir geben!«6Salomo antwortete: »Du hast in großer Treue an deinem Diener, meinem Vater David, gehandelt, so wie auch er stets treu zu dir gehalten und dir aufrichtig gedient hat. Du hast ihm deine große Treue auch darin erwiesen, dass du ihm einen Sohn gegeben hast, der einst auf seinem Thron sitzen sollte, wie das jetzt wirklich eingetreten ist.7HERR, mein Gott! Du hast mich, deinen Diener, anstelle meines Vaters David zum König gemacht. Ich bin noch viel zu jung und unerfahren und fühle mich dieser Aufgabe nicht gewachsen.8Und doch hast du mir das Volk anvertraut, das du dir erwählt hast, und ich trage die Verantwortung für so viele Menschen, die niemand zählen kann.9Darum schenke mir ein Herz, das auf deine Weisung hört, damit ich dein Volk leiten und gerechtes Urteil sprechen kann. Wie kann ich sonst dieses große Volk regieren?«10Dem HERRN gefiel diese Bitte.11Deshalb sagte er zu Salomo: »Du hättest dir langes Leben oder Reichtum oder den Tod deiner Feinde wünschen können. Stattdessen hast du mich um Einsicht gebeten, damit du gerecht regieren kannst.12Darum werde ich deine Bitte erfüllen und dir so viel Weisheit und Verstand schenken, dass kein Mensch vor oder nach dir mit dir verglichen werden kann.13Aber auch das, worum du mich nicht gebeten hast, will ich dir geben: Ich werde dir Reichtum und hohes Ansehen schenken, sodass zu deinen Lebzeiten kein König sich darin mit dir messen kann.14Und wenn du meine Gebote so treu befolgst wie dein Vater David, dann schenke ich dir auch ein langes Leben.«15Als Salomo erwachte, merkte er, dass der HERR im Traum mit ihm gesprochen hatte. Er ging nach Jerusalem und trat vor die Bundeslade des HERRN, opferte Brandopfer und ließ Tiere für das Opfermahl schlachten. Sein gesamter Hofstaat wurde zu dem Mahl geladen.
Ein Beispiel für Salomos Weisheit
16Eines Tages kamen zwei Prostituierte zum König und trugen ihm einen Rechtsstreit vor.17»Mein Herr und König«, sagte die eine, »diese Frau und ich wohnen zusammen im selben Haus. Sie war dabei, als ich einen Sohn gebar.18Zwei Tage danach gebar sie selbst einen Sohn. Nur wir beide waren zu dieser Zeit im Haus; sonst war niemand da.19Eines Nachts wälzte sie sich im Schlaf auf ihr Kind und erdrückte es, sodass es starb.20Da stand sie mitten in der Nacht auf und nahm mir mein Kind weg, während ich schlief. Dafür legte sie ihr totes Kind neben mich.21Als ich am Morgen erwachte und mein Kind stillen wollte, fand ich es tot. Doch als ich es genau ansah, merkte ich, dass es gar nicht das meine war.«22»Das ist nicht wahr!«, rief die andere. »Mein Kind ist das lebende und deins das tote!« »Nein«, rief die erste, »das tote ist deins, das lebende meins!« So stritten sie sich vor dem König.23Da sagte König Salomo: »Die eine behauptet: ›Mein Kind ist das lebende, deins das tote!‹, die andere: ›Nein, das tote ist deins, das lebende meins!‹«24Und er befahl seinen Leuten: »Bringt mir ein Schwert!« Sie brachten es ihm.25Er befahl weiter: »Zerschneidet das lebende Kind in zwei Teile und gebt die eine Hälfte der einen, die andere Hälfte der andern!«26Da rief die Frau, der das lebende Kind gehörte – denn die Mutterliebe regte sich mächtig in ihr: »Ach, mein Herr und König! Gebt es der andern, aber lasst es leben!« Die andere aber sagte: »Weder dir noch mir soll es gehören! Zerschneidet es nur!« (Isa 49:15)27Darauf entschied der König: »Gebt das Kind der ersten, tötet es nicht! Sie ist die Mutter.«28Überall in Israel erfuhr man von diesem Urteil des Königs und alle schauten in Ehrfurcht zu ihm auf. Sie sahen, dass Gott ihm Weisheit geschenkt hatte, sodass er gerechte Entscheidungen fällen konnte.
