Leviticus 22

New International Version

1 The Lord said to Moses,2 ‘Tell Aaron and his sons to treat with respect the sacred offerings the Israelites consecrate to me, so that they will not profane my holy name. I am the Lord.3 ‘Say to them: “For the generations to come, if any of your descendants is ceremonially unclean and yet comes near the sacred offerings that the Israelites consecrate to the Lord, that person must be cut off from my presence. I am the Lord.4 ‘ “If a descendant of Aaron has a defiling skin disease[1] or a bodily discharge, he may not eat the sacred offerings until he is cleansed. He will also be unclean if he touches something defiled by a corpse or by anyone who has an emission of semen,5 or if he touches any crawling thing that makes him unclean, or any person who makes him unclean, whatever the uncleanness may be.6 The one who touches any such thing will be unclean till evening. He must not eat any of the sacred offerings unless he has bathed himself with water.7 When the sun goes down, he will be clean, and after that he may eat the sacred offerings, for they are his food.8 He must not eat anything found dead or torn by wild animals, and so become unclean through it. I am the Lord.9 ‘ “The priests are to perform my service in such a way that they do not become guilty and die for treating it with contempt. I am the Lord, who makes them holy.10 ‘ “No-one outside a priest’s family may eat the sacred offering, nor may the guest of a priest or his hired worker eat it.11 But if a priest buys a slave with money, or if slaves are born in his household, they may eat his food.12 If a priest’s daughter marries anyone other than a priest, she may not eat any of the sacred contributions.13 But if a priest’s daughter becomes a widow or is divorced, yet has no children, and she returns to live in her father’s household as in her youth, she may eat her father’s food. No unauthorised person, however, may eat it.14 ‘ “Anyone who eats a sacred offering by mistake must make restitution to the priest for the offering and add a fifth of the value to it.15 The priests must not desecrate the sacred offerings the Israelites present to the Lord16 by allowing them to eat the sacred offerings and so bring upon them guilt requiring payment. I am the Lord, who makes them holy.” ’17 The Lord said to Moses,18 ‘Speak to Aaron and his sons and to all the Israelites and say to them: “If any of you – whether an Israelite or a foreigner residing in Israel – presents a gift for a burnt offering to the Lord, either to fulfil a vow or as a freewill offering,19 you must present a male without defect from the cattle, sheep or goats in order that it may be accepted on your behalf.20 Do not bring anything with a defect, because it will not be accepted on your behalf.21 When anyone brings from the herd or flock a fellowship offering to the Lord to fulfil a special vow or as a freewill offering, it must be without defect or blemish to be acceptable.22 Do not offer to the Lord the blind, the injured or the maimed, or anything with warts or festering or running sores. Do not place any of these on the altar as a food offering presented to the Lord.23 You may, however, present as a freewill offering an ox[2] or a sheep that is deformed or stunted, but it will not be accepted in fulfilment of a vow.24 You must not offer to the Lord an animal whose testicles are bruised, crushed, torn or cut. You must not do this in your own land,25 and you must not accept such animals from the hand of a foreigner and offer them as the food of your God. They will not be accepted on your behalf, because they are deformed and have defects.” ’26 The Lord said to Moses,27 ‘When a calf, a lamb or a goat is born, it is to remain with its mother for seven days. From the eighth day on, it will be acceptable as a food offering presented to the Lord.28 Do not slaughter a cow or a sheep and its young on the same day.29 ‘When you sacrifice a thank-offering to the Lord, sacrifice it in such a way that it will be accepted on your behalf.30 It must be eaten that same day; leave none of it till morning. I am the Lord.31 ‘Keep my commands and follow them. I am the Lord.32 Do not profane my holy name, for I must be acknowledged as holy by the Israelites. I am the Lord, who made you holy33 and who brought you out of Egypt to be your God. I am the Lord.’

Leviticus 22

English Standard Version

1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,2 “Speak to Aaron and his sons so that they abstain from the holy things of the people of Israel, which they dedicate to me, so that they do not profane my holy name: I am the Lord. (Ex 28:38; Le 18:21; Le 22:3; Nu 6:3; Nu 18:32; De 15:19)3 Say to them, ‘If any one of all your offspring throughout your generations approaches the holy things that the people of Israel dedicate to the Lord, while he has an uncleanness, that person shall be cut off from my presence: I am the Lord. (Le 7:20)4 None of the offspring of Aaron who has a leprous disease or a discharge may eat of the holy things until he is clean. Whoever touches anything that is unclean through contact with the dead or a man who has had an emission of semen, (Le 14:2; Le 15:2; Le 15:13; Le 15:16; Nu 19:11)5 and whoever touches a swarming thing by which he may be made unclean or a person from whom he may take uncleanness, whatever his uncleanness may be— (Le 11:24; Le 11:43; Le 15:7; Le 15:19)6 the person who touches such a thing shall be unclean until the evening and shall not eat of the holy things unless he has bathed his body in water. (Le 15:5; Heb 10:22)7 When the sun goes down he shall be clean, and afterward he may eat of the holy things, because they are his food. (Le 3:11; Le 21:22; Nu 18:11; Nu 18:13)8 He shall not eat what dies of itself or is torn by beasts, and so make himself unclean by it: I am the Lord.’ (Le 7:24)9 They shall therefore keep my charge, lest they bear sin for it and die thereby when they profane it: I am the Lord who sanctifies them. (Ex 28:43; Le 19:17; Le 21:8; Le 21:15; Le 21:23)10 “A lay person shall not eat of a holy thing; no foreign guest of the priest or hired worker shall eat of a holy thing, (Le 24:9; 1Sa 21:6; Mt 12:4; Mr 2:26; Lu 6:4)11 but if a priest buys a slave[1] as his property for money, the slave[2] may eat of it, and anyone born in his house may eat of his food. (Nu 18:11; Nu 18:13)12 If a priest’s daughter marries a layman, she shall not eat of the contribution of the holy things.13 But if a priest’s daughter is widowed or divorced and has no child and returns to her father’s house, as in her youth, she may eat of her father’s food; yet no lay person shall eat of it. (Ge 38:11; Le 10:14; Nu 18:11; Nu 18:19; Ru 1:8)14 And if anyone eats of a holy thing unintentionally, he shall add the fifth of its value to it and give the holy thing to the priest. (Le 4:2; Le 5:15; Le 5:18; Le 27:13; Le 27:15; Le 27:19)15 They shall not profane the holy things of the people of Israel, which they contribute to the Lord, (Le 19:8; Nu 18:32)16 and so cause them to bear iniquity and guilt, by eating their holy things: for I am the Lord who sanctifies them.” (Le 22:9)17 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,18 “Speak to Aaron and his sons and all the people of Israel and say to them, When any one of the house of Israel or of the sojourners in Israel presents a burnt offering as his offering, for any of their vows or freewill offerings that they offer to the Lord, (Le 1:2; Le 1:10; Nu 15:14)19 if it is to be accepted for you it shall be a male without blemish, of the bulls or the sheep or the goats. (Le 1:3; Le 1:10)20 You shall not offer anything that has a blemish, for it will not be acceptable for you. (De 15:21; De 17:1; Mal 1:8; Mal 1:14; Heb 9:14; 1Pe 1:19)21 And when anyone offers a sacrifice of peace offerings to the Lord to fulfill a vow or as a freewill offering from the herd or from the flock, to be accepted it must be perfect; there shall be no blemish in it. (Le 3:1; Le 3:6; Le 7:16; Nu 15:3; Nu 15:8; De 23:21; De 23:23; Ps 61:8; Ps 65:1; Ec 5:4)22 Animals blind or disabled or mutilated or having a discharge or an itch or scabs you shall not offer to the Lord or give them to the Lord as a food offering on the altar. (Le 1:9; Le 1:13; Le 3:3; Le 3:5; Le 21:18; Le 21:20; Le 22:20; Mal 1:8)23 You may present a bull or a lamb that has a part too long or too short for a freewill offering, but for a vow offering it cannot be accepted. (Le 21:18)24 Any animal that has its testicles bruised or crushed or torn or cut you shall not offer to the Lord; you shall not do it within your land,25 neither shall you offer as the bread of your God any such animals gotten from a foreigner. Since there is a blemish in them, because of their mutilation, they will not be accepted for you.” (Le 3:11; Mal 1:14)26 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,27 “When an ox or sheep or goat is born, it shall remain seven days with its mother, and from the eighth day on it shall be acceptable as a food offering to the Lord. (Ex 22:30)28 But you shall not kill an ox or a sheep and her young in one day. (De 22:6)29 And when you sacrifice a sacrifice of thanksgiving to the Lord, you shall sacrifice it so that you may be accepted. (Le 7:12; Ps 107:22; Ps 116:17; Am 4:5)30 It shall be eaten on the same day; you shall leave none of it until morning: I am the Lord. (Le 7:15)31 “So you shall keep my commandments and do them: I am the Lord. (Le 19:37; Nu 15:40; De 4:40)32 And you shall not profane my holy name, that I may be sanctified among the people of Israel. I am the Lord who sanctifies you, (Le 10:3; Le 18:21; Le 20:8)33 who brought you out of the land of Egypt to be your God: I am the Lord.” (Ex 6:7)
