John 17

New International Version

1 After Jesus said this, he looked towards heaven and prayed: ‘Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.2 For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him.3 Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.4 I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do.5 And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.6 ‘I have revealed you[1] to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word.7 Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you.8 For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me.9 I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours.10 All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them.11 I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of[2] your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one.12 While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by[3] that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled.13 ‘I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them.14 I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world.15 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.17 Sanctify them by[4] the truth; your word is truth.18 As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world.19 For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.20 ‘My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message,21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one –23 I in them and you in me – so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.24 ‘Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.25 ‘Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me.26 I have made you[5] known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.’

John 17

English Standard Version

1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, (Joh 7:30; Joh 7:39; Joh 11:41; Joh 12:23; Joh 17:4)2 since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. (Mt 28:18; Joh 6:37; Joh 6:39; Joh 10:28; Joh 10:29; Joh 17:6; Joh 17:9; Joh 17:24; Joh 18:9; Heb 2:13; 1Jo 2:25; Re 2:26)3 And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. (Jer 10:10; Ho 2:20; Ho 6:3; Joh 3:17; Joh 5:44; 1Th 1:9; 2Pe 1:2; 1Jo 5:20)4 I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. (Lu 22:37; Joh 13:31; Joh 17:1; Joh 19:30)5 And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed. (Pr 8:23; Joh 1:1; Joh 8:58; Joh 13:32; Joh 17:24; Re 3:21)6 “I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. (Ps 22:22; Joh 17:2; Joh 17:9; Joh 17:26)7 Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you. (Joh 17:6)8 For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. (Joh 8:26; Joh 8:42; Joh 11:42; Joh 12:49; Joh 15:15; Joh 16:27; Joh 16:30; Joh 17:14; Joh 17:21; Joh 17:25)9 I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours. (Joh 17:2; Joh 17:6; Joh 17:20)10 All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them. (Joh 16:15; 2Th 1:10)11 And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one. (Ex 23:21; Joh 10:16; Joh 10:30; Joh 13:1; Joh 14:12; Joh 17:12; Joh 17:15; Joh 17:21; Joh 17:25; Ro 12:5; Ga 3:28; Eph 1:10; Eph 4:4; Php 2:9; Jud 1:1; Re 19:12)12 While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. (Ps 109:8; Joh 6:39; Joh 10:28; Joh 13:18; Joh 14:25; Joh 18:9; Ac 1:16; 2Th 2:3; 2Th 3:3; Jud 1:24)13 But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves. (Joh 14:12; Joh 15:11)14 I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. (Joh 8:23; Joh 15:19; Joh 17:3; Joh 17:16)15 I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one.[1] (Mt 13:19; Joh 17:9; Joh 17:11; 1Co 5:10)16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. (Joh 17:14)17 Sanctify them[2] in the truth; your word is truth. (2Sa 7:28; Ps 119:160; Joh 15:3; 1Th 5:23; 2Th 2:13; 1Pe 1:22)18 As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. (Mt 10:5; Joh 4:38; Joh 20:21)19 And for their sake I consecrate myself,[3] that they also may be sanctified[4] in truth. (Joh 10:36; 1Co 1:2; 1Co 1:30; 1Co 6:11; Tit 2:14; Heb 2:11; Heb 10:10)20 “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, (Joh 4:39; Joh 17:9; Ro 10:14; 1Co 3:5)21 that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. (Joh 14:23; Joh 17:8; Joh 17:11; 1Co 6:17; 1Jo 1:3; 1Jo 3:24; 1Jo 5:20)22 The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, (Lu 9:26; Joh 1:14; Joh 17:21; Joh 17:24; Ro 8:30)23 I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me. (Joh 5:20; Joh 14:20; Joh 14:31; Joh 16:27; Joh 17:21; Joh 17:24; Joh 17:26; Ro 8:10; 2Co 13:5; Col 3:14; 1Jo 2:5; 1Jo 4:12; 1Jo 4:17)24 Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world. (Joh 1:14; Joh 12:26; Joh 17:5; 2Co 3:18; Eph 1:4; 2Ti 2:11; 1Pe 1:20; 1Jo 3:2)25 O righteous Father, even though the world does not know you, I know you, and these know that you have sent me. (Jer 12:1; Joh 8:55; Joh 10:15; Joh 17:11; 1Jo 1:9; Re 16:5)26 I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.” (Joh 15:9; Joh 15:15; Joh 17:6; Joh 17:23)
