1These are the names of the sons of Israel who went to Egypt with Jacob, each with his family:2Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah;3Issachar, Zebulun and Benjamin;4Dan and Naphtali; Gad and Asher.5The descendants of Jacob numbered seventy[1] in all; Joseph was already in Egypt. Why have you let the boys live?’19The midwives answered Pharaoh, ‘Hebrew women are not like Egyptian women; they are vigorous and give birth before the midwives arrive.’20So God was kind to the midwives and the people increased and became even more numerous.21And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families of their own.22Then Pharaoh gave this order to all his people: ‘Every Hebrew boy that is born you must throw into the Nile, but let every girl live.’

Israel Increases Greatly in Egypt

Pharaoh Oppresses Israel
8Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. (Ac 7:18)9And he said to his people, “Behold, the people of Israel are too many and too mighty for us. (Ps 105:24)10Come, let us deal shrewdly with them, lest they multiply, and, if war breaks out, they join our enemies and fight against us and escape from the land.” (Ps 83:3; Ps 105:25; Ac 7:19)11Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with heavy burdens. They built for Pharaoh store cities, Pithom and Raamses.
