1Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,2where for forty days he was tempted[1] by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.3The devil said to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.’4Jesus answered, ‘It is written: “Man shall not live on bread alone.” ’ (De 8:3)5The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.6And he said to him, ‘I will give you all their authority and splendour; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to.7If you worship me, it will all be yours.’8Jesus answered, ‘It is written: “Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.” ’ (De 6:13)9The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. ‘If you are the Son of God,’ he said, ‘throw yourself down from here.10For it is written: ‘ “He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully;11they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.” ’ (Ps 91:11; Ps 91:12)12Jesus answered, ‘It is said: “Do not put the Lord your God to the test.” ’ (De 6:16)13When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.
Jesus rejected at Nazareth
14Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside.15He was teaching in their synagogues, and everyone praised him.16He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read,17and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:18‘The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free,19to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.’[2] (Isa 58:6; Isa 61:1; Isa 61:2)20Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him.21He began by saying to them, ‘Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.’22All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. ‘Isn’t this Joseph’s son?’ they asked.23Jesus said to them, ‘Surely you will quote this proverb to me: “Physician, heal yourself!” And you will tell me, “Do here in your home town what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.” ’24‘Truly I tell you,’ he continued, ‘no prophet is accepted in his home town.25I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land.26Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon.27And there were many in Israel with leprosy[3] in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed – only Naaman the Syrian.’28All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this.29They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff.30But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way.
Jesus drives out an impure spirit
31Then he went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he taught the people.32They were amazed at his teaching, because his words had authority.33In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice,34‘Go away! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are – the Holy One of God!’35‘Be quiet!’ Jesus said sternly. ‘Come out of him!’ Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him.36All the people were amazed and said to each other, ‘What words these are! With authority and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!’37And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area.
Jesus heals many
38Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her.39So he bent over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them.40At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of illness, and laying his hands on each one, he healed them.41Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, ‘You are the Son of God!’ But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Messiah.42At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them.43But he said, ‘I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.’44And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.

(Re 13:2)7Wenn du nun vor mir anbeten willst, soll das alles dein sein.8Und Jesus antwortete ihm und sprach: Es steht geschrieben: »Du sollst den Herrn, deinen Gott, anbeten und ihm allein dienen.« (De 6:13; Re 19:10)9Und er führte ihn nach Jerusalem und stellte ihn auf die Zinne des Tempels und sprach zu ihm: Wenn du Gottes Sohn bist, so wirf dich von hier hinab;10denn es steht geschrieben: »Er wird seinen Engeln über dir befehlen, dass sie dich bewahren;11und sie werden dich auf den Händen tragen, damit du nicht etwa deinen Fuß an einen Stein stößt.« (Ps 91:11)12Und Jesus antwortete und sprach zu ihm: Es ist gesagt: »Du sollst den Herrn, deinen Gott, nicht versuchen.« (De 6:16)13Und als der Teufel jede Versuchung vollendet hatte, wich er für eine Zeit von ihm. Unglaube in Nazareth
14Und Jesus kehrte in der Kraft des Geistes nach Galiläa zurück, und die Kunde von ihm ging hinaus durch die ganze Umgegend. (Joh 4:3)15Und er lehrte in ihren Synagogen[3], geehrt von allen. (Mt 4:23; Lu 4:44)16Und er kam nach Nazareth, wo er erzogen worden war; und er ging nach seiner Gewohnheit am Sabbattag in die Synagoge und stand auf, um vorzulesen. (Mt 2:23; Ac 13:15)17Und es wurde ihm das Buch des Propheten Jesaja gereicht; und als er das Buch aufgerollt hatte, fand er die Stelle, wo geschrieben war:18»Der Geist des Herrn ist auf mir, weil er mich gesalbt hat, Armen gute Botschaft zu verkündigen; er hat mich gesandt, Gefangenen Freiheit[4] auszurufen und Blinden, dass sie wieder sehen, Zerschlagene in Freiheit[5] hinzusenden, (Isa 29:18; Isa 42:7; Isa 49:9; Mt 11:5; Lu 4:43; Lu 6:20; Lu 7:22; Joh 5:36; Ac 4:27)19auszurufen ein angenehmes Jahr des Herrn.« (Le 25:10; Isa 61:1)20Und als er das Buch zugerollt hatte, gab er es dem Diener zurück und setzte sich; und aller Augen in der Synagoge waren auf ihn gerichtet.21Er fing aber an, zu ihnen zu sagen: Heute ist diese Schrift vor euren Ohren erfüllt.22Und alle gaben ihm Zeugnis und wunderten sich über die Worte der Gnade, die aus seinem Mund hervorgingen; und sie sprachen: Ist dieser nicht der Sohn Josefs? (Lu 1:27; Lu 2:47; Lu 4:32; Joh 6:42; Eph 4:29)23Und er sprach zu ihnen: Ihr werdet jedenfalls dieses Sprichwort[6] zu mir sagen: Arzt, heile dich selbst! Alles, was wir gehört haben, ⟨dass es⟩ in Kapernaum geschehen ⟨sei⟩, tu auch hier in deiner Vaterstadt!24Er sprach aber: Wahrlich, ich sage euch, dass kein Prophet in seiner Vaterstadt angenehm ist. (Joh 4:44)25In Wahrheit aber sage ich euch: Viele Witwen waren in den Tagen Elias in Israel, als der Himmel drei Jahre und sechs Monate verschlossen war, sodass eine große Hungersnot über das ganze Land kam; (1Ki 17:1; 1Ki 18:2; Jas 5:17)26und zu keiner von ihnen wurde Elia gesandt als nur nach Sarepta in Sidon zu einer Frau, einer Witwe. (1Ki 17:9)27Und viele Aussätzige[7] waren zur Zeit des Propheten Elisa in Israel, und keiner von ihnen wurde gereinigt als nur Naaman, der Syrer. (2Ki 5:14; 2Ki 7:3)28Und alle in der Synagoge wurden von Wut erfüllt, als sie dies hörten.29Und sie standen auf und stießen ihn zur Stadt hinaus und führten ihn bis an den Rand des Berges, auf dem ihre Stadt erbaut war, um ihn so hinabzustürzen.30Er aber schritt durch ihre Mitte hindurch und ging weg. (Mr 1:21; Joh 8:20)
Heilung eines Besessenen
31Und er kam nach Kapernaum hinab, einer Stadt in Galiläa, und lehrte sie an den Sabbaten. (Lu 6:6; Lu 13:10; Joh 2:12)32Und sie erstaunten sehr über seine Lehre, denn sein Wort war mit Vollmacht. (Jer 23:29; Lu 4:22; Lu 24:19)33Und es war in der Synagoge ein Mensch, der einen Geist eines unreinen Dämons hatte, und er schrie auf mit lauter Stimme34und sprach: Ach, was haben wir mit dir zu schaffen, Jesus, Nazarener? Bist du gekommen, uns zu verderben? Ich kenne dich, wer du bist: der Heilige Gottes. (Lu 1:35; Lu 8:28)35Und Jesus bedrohte ihn und sprach: Verstumme und fahre aus von ihm! Und als der Dämon ihn mitten unter sie geworfen hatte, fuhr er von ihm aus, ohne ihm Schaden zu tun. (Mt 8:16)36Und Entsetzen kam über alle, und sie redeten untereinander und sprachen: Was ist dies für ein Wort? Denn mit Vollmacht und Kraft gebietet er den unreinen Geistern, und sie fahren aus.37Und die Kunde von ihm ging hinaus in jeden Ort der Umgegend. (Mt 8:14; Mr 1:29)
Heilung der Schwiegermutter des Petrus
38Er machte sich aber auf von der Synagoge und kam in das Haus Simons. Die Schwiegermutter des Simon aber war von einem starken Fieber befallen, und sie baten ihn für sie.39Und er beugte sich über sie, bedrohte das Fieber, und es verließ sie; sie aber stand sogleich auf und diente ihnen. (Mt 4:23; Mt 8:16; Mr 1:32)
Heilungen und Predigt
40Als aber die Sonne unterging, brachten alle, die an mancherlei Krankheiten Leidende hatten, sie zu ihm; er aber legte jedem von ihnen die Hände auf und heilte sie. (Mr 8:23; Lu 13:13)41Und auch Dämonen fuhren von vielen aus, indem sie schrien und sprachen: Du bist der Sohn Gottes. Und er bedrohte sie und ließ sie nicht reden, weil sie wussten, dass er der Christus war. (Mt 8:29; Mr 3:11; Lu 1:35)42Als es aber Tag geworden war, ging er hinaus und begab sich an einen einsamen Ort; und die Volksmengen suchten ihn auf und kamen bis zu ihm, und sie hielten ihn auf, dass er nicht von ihnen ging.43Er aber sprach zu ihnen: Ich muss auch den anderen Städten die gute Botschaft vom Reich[8] Gottes verkündigen[9], denn dazu bin ich gesandt worden. (Lu 4:18; Lu 8:1)44Und er predigte in den Synagogen von Galiläa[10]. (Mt 4:18; Mr 1:16; Lu 4:15)
