1Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance.2So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, ‘They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!’3So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb.4Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.5He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in.6Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there,7as well as the cloth that had been wrapped round Jesus’ head. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen.8Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed.9(They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)10Then the disciples went back to where they were staying.

11Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb12and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.13They asked her, ‘Woman, why are you crying?’ ‘They have taken my Lord away,’ she said, ‘and I don’t know where they have put him.’14At this, she turned round and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realise that it was Jesus.15He asked her, ‘Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?’ Thinking he was the gardener, she said, ‘Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.’16Jesus said to her, ‘Mary.’ She turned towards him and cried out in Aramaic, ‘Rabboni!’ (which means ‘Teacher’).17Jesus said, ‘Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, “I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.” ’18Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: ‘I have seen the Lord!’ And she told them that he had said these things to her.

19On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you!’20After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.21Again Jesus said, ‘Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.’22And with that he breathed on them and said, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit.23If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.’

24Now Thomas (also known as Didymus[1]), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came.25So the other disciples told him, ‘We have seen the Lord!’ But he said to them, ‘Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.’26A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you!’27Then he said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.’28Thomas said to him, ‘My Lord and my God!’29Then Jesus told him, ‘Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.’
The purpose of John’s gospel
30Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book.31But these are written that you may believe[2] that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

Als sie nun weinte, beugte sie sich vornüber in die Gruft12und sieht zwei Engel in weißen ⟨Kleidern⟩ dasitzen, einen bei dem Haupt und einen bei den Füßen, wo der Leib Jesu gelegen hatte.13Und jene sagen zu ihr: Frau, was weinst du? Sie spricht zu ihnen: Weil sie meinen Herrn weggenommen und ich nicht weiß, wo sie ihn hingelegt haben.14Als sie dies gesagt hatte, wandte sie sich zurück und sieht Jesus dastehen; und sie wusste nicht, dass es Jesus war. (Lu 24:16; Joh 21:4)15Jesus spricht zu ihr: Frau, was weinst du? Wen suchst du? Sie, in der Meinung, es sei der Gärtner, spricht zu ihm: Herr, wenn du ihn weggetragen, so sage mir, wo du ihn hingelegt hast! Und ich werde ihn wegholen.16Jesus spricht zu ihr: Maria! Sie wendet sich um und spricht zu ihm auf Hebräisch: Rabbuni[2]! – das heißt Lehrer.17Jesus spricht zu ihr: Rühre mich nicht an! Denn ich bin noch nicht aufgefahren zum Vater. Geh aber hin zu meinen Brüdern und sprich zu ihnen: Ich fahre auf zu meinem Vater und eurem Vater und zu meinem Gott und eurem Gott! (Joh 6:62; Ro 8:15; Ga 1:4; Eph 1:17; Heb 2:11)18Maria Magdalena kommt und verkündet den[3] Jüngern: Ich habe den Herrn gesehen! – und dass[4] er dies zu ihr gesagt habe.
Erscheinung des Auferstandenen vor den Jüngern
19Als es nun Abend war an jenem Tag, dem ersten der Woche, und die Türen, wo die Jünger waren, aus Furcht vor den Juden verschlossen waren, kam Jesus und trat in die Mitte und spricht zu ihnen: Friede euch! (Mr 16:14; Joh 7:13; Joh 20:1; 1Co 15:5)20Und als er dies gesagt hatte, zeigte er ihnen die Hände und die Seite. Da freuten sich die Jünger, als sie den Herrn sahen. (Mt 28:8; Lu 24:39; Joh 16:22; Joh 19:34)21Jesus sprach nun wieder zu ihnen: Friede euch! Wie der Vater mich ausgesandt hat, sende ich auch euch. (Joh 17:18)22Und als er dies gesagt hatte, hauchte er sie an und spricht zu ihnen: Empfangt Heiligen Geist!23Wenn ihr jemandem die Sünden vergebt, dem sind sie vergeben, wenn ihr sie jemandem behaltet, sind sie ⟨ihm⟩ behalten. (Mt 18:18)24Thomas aber, einer von den Zwölfen, genannt Zwilling[5], war nicht bei ihnen, als Jesus kam. (Joh 11:16)25Da sagten die anderen Jünger zu ihm: Wir haben den Herrn gesehen. Er aber sprach zu ihnen: Wenn ich nicht in seinen Händen das Mal der Nägel sehe und meine Finger in das Mal der Nägel lege und lege meine Hand in seine Seite, so werde ich nicht glauben. (Ps 22:17; Mr 16:11; Lu 24:39; Joh 19:34)26Und nach acht Tagen waren seine Jünger wieder drinnen und Thomas bei ihnen. ⟨Da⟩ kommt Jesus, als die Türen verschlossen waren, und trat in die Mitte und sprach: Friede euch!27Dann spricht er zu Thomas: Reiche deinen Finger her und sieh meine Hände, und reiche deine Hand her und lege sie in meine Seite, und sei nicht ungläubig, sondern gläubig! (Lu 24:39; Joh 19:34)28Thomas antwortete und sprach zu ihm: Mein Herr und mein Gott! (Ps 84:4)29Jesus spricht zu ihm: Weil du mich gesehen hast, hast du geglaubt. Glückselig ⟨sind⟩, die nicht gesehen und ⟨doch⟩ geglaubt haben! (2Co 5:7; 1Pe 1:8)
Zweck dieses Buches
30Auch viele andere Zeichen hat nun zwar Jesus vor den Jüngern getan, die nicht in diesem Buch geschrieben sind. (Joh 11:47; Joh 21:25)31Diese aber sind geschrieben, damit ihr glaubt, dass Jesus der Christus ist, der Sohn Gottes, und damit ihr durch den Glauben[6] Leben habt in seinem Namen. (Joh 1:49; Joh 3:15; Joh 19:35; 1Jo 5:13)
