1When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was a garden, and he and his disciples went into it.2Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.3So Judas came to the garden, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.4Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, ‘Who is it you want?’5‘Jesus of Nazareth,’ they replied. ‘I am he,’ Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.)6When Jesus said, ‘I am he,’ they drew back and fell to the ground.7Again he asked them, ‘Who is it you want?’ ‘Jesus of Nazareth,’ they said.8Jesus answered, ‘I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.’9This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: ‘I have not lost one of those you gave me.’ (Joh 6:39)10Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)11Jesus commanded Peter, ‘Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?’12Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus. They bound him13and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year.14Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people.
Peter’s first denial
15Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest, he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard,16but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the servant-girl on duty there and brought Peter in.17‘You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?’ she asked Peter. He replied, ‘I am not.’18It was cold, and the servants and officials stood round a fire they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.
The high priest questions Jesus
19Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.20‘I have spoken openly to the world,’ Jesus replied. ‘I always taught in synagogues or at the temple, where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.21Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said.’22When Jesus said this, one of the officials near by slapped him in the face. ‘Is this the way you answer the high priest?’ he demanded.23‘If I said something wrong,’ Jesus replied, ‘testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?’24Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
Peter’s second and third denials
25Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself. So they asked him, ‘You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you?’ He denied it, saying, ‘I am not.’26One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, challenged him, ‘Didn’t I see you with him in the garden?’27Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a cock began to crow.
Jesus before Pilate
28Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace, because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.29So Pilate came out to them and asked, ‘What charges are you bringing against this man?’30‘If he were not a criminal,’ they replied, ‘we would not have handed him over to you.’31Pilate said, ‘Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.’ ‘But we have no right to execute anyone,’ they objected.32This took place to fulfil what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.33Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, ‘Are you the king of the Jews?’34‘Is that your own idea,’ Jesus asked, ‘or did others talk to you about me?’35‘Am I a Jew?’ Pilate replied. ‘Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?’36Jesus said, ‘My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.’37‘You are a king, then!’ said Pilate. Jesus answered, ‘You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.’38‘What is truth?’ retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, ‘I find no basis for a charge against him.39But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release “the king of the Jews”?’40They shouted back, ‘No, not him! Give us Barabbas!’ Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.

Er spricht zu ihnen: Ich bin ⟨es⟩! Aber auch Judas, der ihn überlieferte, stand bei ihnen. (Mt 2:23; Joh 6:20; Joh 19:19; Ac 1:16)6Als er nun zu ihnen sagte: Ich bin ⟨es⟩!, wichen sie zurück und fielen zu Boden. (Ps 27:2)7Da fragte er sie wieder: Wen sucht ihr? Sie aber sprachen: Jesus, den Nazoräer[3].8Jesus antwortete: Ich habe euch gesagt, dass ich es bin. Wenn ihr nun mich sucht, so lasst diese gehen!9Damit das Wort erfüllt wurde, das er sprach: Von denen, die du mir gegeben hast, habe ich keinen verloren. (Joh 6:39)10Simon Petrus nun, der ein Schwert hatte, zog es und schlug den Knecht[4] des Hohen Priesters und hieb ihm das rechte Ohr ab. Der Name des Knechtes aber war Malchus. (Joh 18:26)11Da sprach Jesus zu Petrus: Stecke das Schwert in die Scheide! Den Kelch, den mir der Vater gegeben hat, soll ich den nicht trinken? (Mt 26:39; Mt 26:57; Mr 14:53; Lu 22:54)
Verhör durch Hannas – Verleugnung durch Petrus
12Die Schar nun und der Oberst[5] und die Diener der Juden nahmen Jesus und banden ihn;13und sie führten ihn zuerst hin zu Hannas, denn er war Schwiegervater des Kaiphas, der jenes Jahr Hoher Priester war. (Joh 11:49; Ac 4:6)14Kaiphas aber war es, der den Juden geraten hatte, es sei nützlich, dass ein Mensch für das Volk sterbe. (Joh 11:50)15Simon Petrus aber folgte Jesus und ein anderer Jünger. Dieser Jünger aber war dem Hohen Priester bekannt und ging mit Jesus hinein in den Hof des Hohen Priesters. (Joh 20:2)16Petrus aber stand an der Tür draußen. Da ging der andere Jünger, der dem Hohen Priester bekannt war, hinaus und sprach mit der Türhüterin und führte Petrus hinein.17Da spricht die Magd, die Türhüterin, zu Petrus: Bist nicht auch du ⟨einer⟩ von den Jüngern dieses Menschen? Er sagt: Ich bin es nicht.18Es standen aber die Knechte[6] und die Diener da, die ein Kohlenfeuer gemacht hatten, weil es kalt war, und wärmten sich; Petrus aber stand auch bei ihnen und wärmte sich.19Der Hohe Priester nun fragte Jesus über seine Jünger und über seine Lehre.20Jesus antwortete ihm: Ich habe öffentlich zu der Welt geredet; ich habe allezeit in der Synagoge und in dem Tempel gelehrt, wo alle Juden zusammenkommen, und im Verborgenen habe ich nichts geredet. (Joh 7:14)21Was fragst du mich? Frage die, welche gehört haben, was ich zu ihnen geredet habe; siehe, diese wissen, was ich gesagt habe.22Als er aber dies sagte, gab einer der Diener, der dabeistand, Jesus einen Schlag ⟨ins Gesicht⟩ und sagte: Antwortest du so dem Hohen Priester? (Joh 19:3; Ac 23:2)23Jesus antwortete ihm: Wenn ich schlecht geredet habe, so gib Zeugnis von dem Schlechten! Wenn aber recht, was schlägst du mich? (1Pe 2:23)24Hannas nun sandte ihn gebunden zu Kaiphas, dem Hohen Priester.25Simon Petrus aber stand da und wärmte sich. Da sprachen sie zu ihm: Bist nicht auch du ⟨einer⟩ von seinen Jüngern? Er leugnete und sprach: Ich bin es nicht.26Es spricht einer von den Knechten[7] des Hohen Priesters, der ein Verwandter dessen war, dem Petrus das Ohr abgehauen hatte: Sah ich dich nicht in dem Garten bei ihm? (Joh 18:10)27Da leugnete Petrus wieder; und gleich darauf krähte der Hahn. (Mt 27:2; Mr 15:1; Lu 23:1; Joh 13:38)
Verhör durch Pilatus
28Sie führen nun Jesus von Kaiphas in das Prätorium[8]; es war aber frühmorgens. Und sie gingen nicht hinein in das Prätorium, damit sie sich nicht verunreinigten, sondern das Passah⟨mahl⟩ essen ⟨konnten⟩. (2Ch 30:18)29Pilatus[9] ging nun zu ihnen hinaus und sprach: Welche Anklage bringt ihr gegen diesen Menschen vor?30Sie antworteten und sprachen zu ihm: Wenn dieser nicht ein Übeltäter wäre, würden wir ihn dir nicht überliefert haben.31Da sprach Pilatus zu ihnen: Nehmt ihr ihn und richtet ihn nach eurem Gesetz. Da sprachen die Juden zu ihm: Es ist uns nicht erlaubt, jemanden zu töten; (Joh 19:6; Ac 18:15)32damit das Wort Jesu erfüllt wurde, das er sprach, um anzudeuten, welches Todes er sterben sollte. (Joh 12:33)33Pilatus ging nun wieder hinein in das Prätorium und rief Jesus und sprach zu ihm: Bist du der König der Juden? (Joh 19:19)34Jesus antwortete: Sagst du dies von dir selbst aus, oder haben dir andere von mir gesagt?35Pilatus antwortete: Bin ich etwa ein Jude? Deine Nation und die Hohen Priester haben dich mir überliefert. Was hast du getan? (Joh 19:11; Ac 4:26)36Jesus antwortete: Mein Reich[10] ist nicht von dieser Welt; wenn mein Reich[11] von dieser Welt wäre, so hätten meine Diener gekämpft, damit ich den Juden nicht überliefert würde, jetzt aber ist mein Reich[12] nicht von hier. (Lu 17:20; Joh 6:15)37Da sprach Pilatus zu ihm: Also bist du doch ein König? Jesus antwortete: Du sagst es, dass ich ein König bin. Ich bin dazu geboren und dazu in die Welt gekommen, dass ich für die Wahrheit Zeugnis gebe. Jeder, der aus der Wahrheit ist, hört meine Stimme. (Joh 8:47; Joh 12:13; 1Ti 6:13; Re 1:5)38Pilatus spricht zu ihm: Was ist Wahrheit? Und als er dies gesagt hatte, ging er wieder zu den Juden hinaus und spricht zu ihnen: Ich finde keinerlei Schuld an ihm. (Joh 7:18)39Es ist aber ein Brauch bei euch, dass ich euch an dem Passah einen losgebe. Wollt ihr nun, dass ich euch den König der Juden losgebe?40Da schrien sie wieder[13] alle und sagten: Nicht diesen, sondern den Barabbas! Barabbas aber war ein Räuber. (Mt 27:26; Mr 15:15; Ac 3:13)
