1When Jesus had finished saying all this to the people who were listening, he entered Capernaum.2There a centurion’s servant, whom his master valued highly, was ill and about to die.3The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant.4When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, ‘This man deserves to have you do this,5because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.’6So Jesus went with them. He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: ‘Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof.7That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.8For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, “Go”, and he goes; and that one, “Come”, and he comes. I say to my servant, “Do this”, and he does it.’9When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, ‘I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.’10Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well.
Jesus raises a widow’s son
11Soon afterwards, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him.12As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out – the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her.13When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, ‘Don’t cry.’14Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, ‘Young man, I say to you, get up!’15The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.16They were all filled with awe and praised God. ‘A great prophet has appeared among us,’ they said. ‘God has come to help his people.’17This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country.
Jesus and John the Baptist
18John’s disciples told him about all these things. Calling two of them,19he sent them to the Lord to ask, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?’20When the men came to Jesus, they said, ‘John the Baptist sent us to you to ask, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?” ’21At that very time Jesus cured many who had diseases, illnesses and evil spirits, and gave sight to many who were blind.22So he replied to the messengers, ‘Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy[1] are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.23Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.’24After John’s messengers left, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: ‘What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind?25If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear expensive clothes and indulge in luxury are in palaces.26But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.27This is the one about whom it is written: ‘ “I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.” (Mal 3:1)28I tell you, among those born of women there is no-one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.’29(All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus’ words, acknowledged that God’s way was right, because they had been baptised by John.30But the Pharisees and the experts in the law rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptised by John.)31Jesus went on to say, ‘To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation? What are they like?32They are like children sitting in the market-place and calling out to each other: ‘ “We played the pipe for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not cry.”33For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, “He has a demon.”34The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, “Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.”35But wisdom is proved right by all her children.’
Jesus anointed by a sinful woman
36When one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, he went to the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table.37A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume.38As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.39When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, ‘If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is – that she is a sinner.’40Jesus answered him, ‘Simon, I have something to tell you.’ ‘Tell me, teacher,’ he said.41‘Two people owed money to a certain money-lender. One owed him five hundred denarii,[2] and the other fifty. (Mt 20:2)42Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?’43Simon replied, ‘I suppose the one who had the bigger debt forgiven.’ ‘You have judged correctly,’ Jesus said.44Then he turned towards the woman and said to Simon, ‘Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.45You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet.46You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet.47Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven – as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.’48Then Jesus said to her, ‘Your sins are forgiven.’49The other guests began to say among themselves, ‘Who is this who even forgives sins?’50Jesus said to the woman, ‘Your faith has saved you; go in peace.’
1När Jesus hade slutat tala till folket gick han in i staden Kafarnaum.2Där fanns en romersk officer som hade en tjänare som han tyckte mycket om, och nu var tjänaren sjuk och låg för döden.3När officeren därför fick höra talas om Jesus, sände han några av judarnas ledare till honom för att be honom komma och bota tjänaren.4Dessa kom nu till Jesus och bad ivrigt att han skulle följa med och hjälpa mannen. ”Om någon förtjänar din hjälp så är det han”, sa de.5”Han älskar vårt folk och har till och med byggt synagogan[1] åt oss!”6Då följde Jesus med dem. Men innan han kom fram till huset, skickade officeren några vänner för att säga till honom: ”Herre, stanna där du är, jag är inte värd att du går in i mitt hus.[2]7Därför vågade jag inte heller komma till dig. Men säg bara ett ord, så blir min tjänare frisk.8Jag vet det, för jag har själv överordnade officerare som ger mig order, och jag har andra soldater som är under mig. Om jag säger till en av dem: ’Gå’, så går han, och till en annan: ’Kom’, så kommer han, och om jag säger till min tjänare: ’Gör det här, eller det där’, så gör han det.”9Jesus blev mycket förvånad och vände sig till folket som följde honom och sa: ”Jag försäkrar er att inte ens bland Israels folk har jag sett en så stark tro.”10Och när officerens vänner kom tillbaka till huset, såg de att tjänaren var fullt frisk.
Jesus uppväcker en änkas son från döden
11Sedan gick Jesus med sina efterföljare till staden Nain, följd av en stor mängd människor.12Och just som de närmade sig stadsporten, mötte de ett begravningsfölje. Den döde var enda sonen, och hans mamma var änka. Många sörjande från staden gjorde henne sällskap.13När Herren Jesus såg änkan fylldes han av medlidande och sa: ”Gråt inte!”14Sedan gick han fram till båren och rörde vid den, och bärarna stannade. ”Unge man”, sa han, ”res dig upp!”15Då satte sig den döde upp och började tala till dem som stod runt omkring. Och Jesus gav honom tillbaka till hans mamma.16Människorna runt omkring blev helt förskräckta över det de hade sett och hyllade Gud och sa: ”En stor profet har visat sig bland oss och framför Guds budskap”, och: ”Gud har kommit för att hjälpa sitt folk”.17Berättelsen om vad Jesus hade gjort spred sig sedan över hela Judeen och till och med utanför landets gränser.
Jesus svarar på Johannes döparens fråga
18Johannes döparens efterföljare fick snart höra talas om allt som Jesus gjorde, och när de berättade det för Johannes19skickade han två av dem till Herren Jesus för att fråga: ”Är du verkligen den som Gud har lovat sända oss, eller ska vi vänta på någon annan?”20-22När Johannes båda efterföljare hittade Jesus höll han just på att bota människor från sjukdomar och lidanden och från onda andar. Han gjorde också så att flera blinda kunde se igen. När Johannes efterföljare då ställde de frågor som Johannes ville ha svar på, sa Jesus: ”Gå tillbaka till Johannes och berätta för honom vad ni har sett och hört: att blinda börjar se, förlamade går, spetälska blir friska, döva hör, döda får liv igen, och de fattiga får höra ett glatt budskap.[3]23Säg sedan till honom: ’Lycklig är den som inte tvivlar på mig.’ ”24När de som var utsända av Johannes hade gått, började Jesus tala till folket om Johannes. Han sa: ”När ni gick ut till honom i ödemarken, vad ville ni då se? Ville ni se en svag man, lik ett grässtrå som vajar hit och dit för vinden?25Självklart inte! Ville ni se en man klädd i vackra kläder? Nej, män som går omkring i dyrbara kläder och lever i lyx hittar man i palatsen.26Ville ni kanske se en profet som framförde Guds budskap? Ja, jag säger er att Johannes är mer än en profet.27Han är den som Gud talar om i Skriften[4] när han säger: ’Lyssna! Jag sänder min budbärare före dig, och han ska bereda vägen för dig’28Jag försäkrar er, att Johannes döparen har betytt mer än någon annan människa. Ändå kommer den minst betydelsefulla bland dem som får vara Guds eget folk[5] att betyda mer än vad Johannes gjorde här på jorden.29Alla som hörde Johannes tala höll med om att det som Gud krävde av dem var riktigt, och de lät Johannes döpa dem. Ja, till och med tullindrivarna[6] döptes.30Men fariseerna[7] och de laglärda förkastade Guds plan och vägrade att låta Johannes döpa dem.31Ja, vad ska jag säga om detta släkte som inte vill tro?” fortsatte Jesus. ”Vad ska jag likna dem vid?32De är som barn som leker på torget och ropar till varandra: ’Vi spelade bröllopsmusik för er, men ni ville inte dansa. Vi spelade begravningsmusik för er, men ni ville inte gråta.’33Exakt så reagerar ni när det gäller Johannes döparen och mig. Johannes dricker inte vin och äter inte bröd, och då säger ni: ’Han är besatt av en ond ande.’34Men jag, Människosonen[8], äter och dricker, och då beskyller ni mig för att frossa i mat och dryck och leva tillsammans med de värsta syndare!35Men den som är vis inser att Gud i sin vishet alltid har rätt.[9]”
En prostituerad smörjer Jesus fötter
36En av fariseerna[10], som hette Simon, bjöd hem Jesus till sig, och Jesus tackade ja till inbjudan. Men när de hade slagit sig ner för att äta,37fick en prostituerad höra att han var där. Hon gick då dit med en flaska väldoftande olja.38Och när hon kom in i huset ställde hon sig vid Jesus fötter[11] och grät tills hans fötter var våta av hennes tårar. Sedan torkade hon hans fötter med sitt hår och kysste dem och smorde dem med olja.39När värden, som var farisé, såg vad som hände, tänkte han för sig själv: ”Om Jesus verkligen hade varit en profet, hade han med Guds hjälp förstått vad det här är för en slags kvinna, och avslöjat henne som prostituerad.”40Men Jesus visste vad han tänkte och sa: ”Simon, jag har något att säga dig.” Och Simon svarade: ”Säg det, Mästare.”41Jesus berättade då en bild: ”En man lånade ut pengar till två personer, mer än en årslön till den ene och bara en månadslön till den andre.[12]42Men ingen av dem kunde betala tillbaka, så han avskrev skulden.”Sedan frågade Jesus Simon: ”Vem av dem tror du älskade honom mest efter detta?”43”Jag antar att det var den som var skyldig honom mest”, svarade Simon. ”Ja, det är riktigt”, sa Jesus.44Sedan vände sig Jesus mot kvinnan och sa till Simon: ”Ser du kvinnan som står här? När jag kom in i ditt hus brydde du dig inte om att ge mig vatten så att jag kunde tvätta dammet av mina fötter, men hon har tvättat mina fötter med sina tårar och torkat dem med sitt hår.45Du gav mig ingen hälsningskyss när jag kom, men hon har kysst mina fötter utan uppehåll, ända sedan jag kom hit.46Du smorde inte mitt huvud med olja som man brukar göra, men hon har smort mina fötter med sin väldoftande olja.47Simon, min vän, alla hennes synder är förlåtna. Det är därför hon visar så mycket kärlek. Men den som har fått lite förlåtet, visar lite kärlek.”48Sedan sa Jesus till kvinnan: ”Jag förlåter dig dina synder.”49Då sa männen vid bordet till varandra: ”Vem är den här mannen, som till och med förlåter synder?”50Men Jesus sa till kvinnan: ”Din tro har hjälpt dig. Gå i frid.”
