1Afterwards Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Galilee.[1] It happened this way:2Simon Peter, Thomas (also known as Didymus[2]), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together.3‘I’m going out to fish,’ Simon Peter told them, and they said, ‘We’ll go with you.’ So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.4Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realise that it was Jesus.5He called out to them, ‘Friends, haven’t you any fish?’ ‘No,’ they answered.6He said, ‘Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.’ When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.7Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, ‘It is the Lord!’ As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, ‘It is the Lord,’ he wrapped his outer garment round him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water.8The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred metres.9When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread.10Jesus said to them, ‘Bring some of the fish you have just caught.’11So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn.12Jesus said to them, ‘Come and have breakfast.’ None of the disciples dared ask him, ‘Who are you?’ They knew it was the Lord.13Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish.14This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.
Jesus reinstates Peter
15When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?’ ‘Yes, Lord,’ he said, ‘you know that I love you.’ Jesus said, ‘Feed my lambs.’16Again Jesus said, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’ He answered, ‘Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.’ Jesus said, ‘Take care of my sheep.’17The third time he said to him, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’ Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, ‘Do you love me?’ He said, ‘Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.’ Jesus said, ‘Feed my sheep.18Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.’19Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, ‘Follow me!’20Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, ‘Lord, who is going to betray you?’)21When Peter saw him, he asked, ‘Lord, what about him?’22Jesus answered, ‘If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.’23Because of this, the rumour spread among the believers that this disciple would not die. But Jesus did not say that he would not die; he only said, ‘If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?’24This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true.25Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.
Jesus visar sig för sina efterföljare när de fiskar
1Senare visade sig Jesus för sina efterföljare igen vid Galileiska sjön[1], och så här gick det till:2En grupp bestående av Simon Petrus, Tomas, som kallades Tvillingen, Natanael från Kana i Galileen, Sebedaios söner Jakob och Johannes, och två andra efterföljare var där tillsammans.3Då sa Simon Petrus till de andra: ”Jag ger mig ut och fiskar”, och de andra svarade: ”Vi följer också med.” Så steg de i båten och for ut på sjön, men de fick inte en enda fisk på hela natten.4När det sedan blev morgon stod Jesus på stranden, men de förstod inte att det var han.5Jesus ropade till dem: ”Hur har det gått för er, mina vänner? Har ni fått någon fisk?””Nej”, svarade de.6Då sa han: ”Kasta ut nätet på höger sida om båten, så får ni fisk.” De följde hans råd, och nu fick de så mycket fisk att de inte orkade dra in nätet!7Den efterföljare som Jesus älskade[2] sa då till Petrus: ”Det är Herren Jesus.” Och när Simon Petrus hörde att det var Herren, knöt han om sig sitt ytterplagg, för han hade nästan inget på sig, och han hoppade i vattnet och simmade i land.8De andra efterföljarna kom efter med båten och släpade nätet med fiskarna. De var ungefär 100 meter kvar till stranden.9När de kom i land såg de att Jesus hade gjort upp en eld och höll på att grilla fisk och baka bröd över glöden.10Jesus sa nu till dem: ”Hämta några av fiskarna som ni just fick.”11Då steg Simon Petrus upp i båten och hjälpte de andra att dra nätet iland. Det fanns 153 stora fiskar i nätet, men trots att det var så fullt hade det inte gått sönder.12Jesus sa sedan till sina efterföljare: ”Kom hit och ät.” Ingen av dem vågade fråga vem han var, men alla förstod att det var Herren.13Och Jesus gick fram till dem och gav dem av brödet och fisken.14Detta var tredje gången som Jesus visade sig för sina efterföljare sedan han uppstått från de döda.
Jesus och Petrus
15När de hade ätit, sa Jesus till Simon Petrus: ”Simon, Johannes son, älskar du mig mer än de andra gör?””Ja, Herre”, svarade Petrus, ”du vet att jag älskar dig.””Ge då mat till mina lamm”, sa Jesus till honom.16Jesus frågade sedan en andra gång: ”Simon, Johannes son, älskar du mig?””Ja, Herre”, sa Petrus, ”du vet att jag älskar dig.””Var då en herde för mina får”, sa Jesus.17För tredje gången frågade nu Jesus honom: ”Simon, Johannes son, älskar du mig?”Petrus blev mycket ledsen över att Jesus än en gång frågade om att han älskade honom, men han svarade: ”Herre, du vet allt. Du vet att jag älskar dig.”Då sa Jesus till honom: ”Ge då mat till mina får.18Jag ska säga dig som det är: När du var ung kunde du göra dig i ordning och gå vart du ville. Men när du blir gammal, ska du sträcka ut händerna, och andra ska göra dig i ordning och föra dig dit du inte vill.[3]”19Detta sa Jesus för att visa med vilket slags död Petrus skulle upphöja och ära Gud. Sedan sa Jesus till honom: ”Följ mig.”20Petrus vände sig nu om och fick se att den efterföljare som Jesus älskade[4] kom efter honom, han som under deras sista måltid med Jesus hade lutat sig mot Jesus och frågat vem som skulle förråda honom.21Och när Petrus fick se honom frågade han Jesus: ”Vad kommer att hända med honom?”22Men Jesus svarade: ”Om jag vill att han ska leva tills jag kommer, så påverkar det inte dig. Se bara till att du följer mig.”23På grund av detta spreds ryktet bland de troende att just den efterföljaren inte skulle dö. Men Jesus sa aldrig till Petrus att den efterföljaren inte skulle dö. Han sa bara: ”Om jag vill att han ska leva tills jag kommer, så påverkar det inte dig.”
Slutord
24Det är den efterföljaren som såg alla dessa händelser och har skrivit ner dem. Och vi vet att det han berättar är sant.25Jesus gjorde också mycket annat, och om man skulle skriva ner alla dessa händelser, tror jag inte att hela världen skulle rymma alla de böcker man då måste skriva!
