1This will be my third visit to you. ‘Every matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ (De 19:15)2I already gave you a warning when I was with you the second time. I now repeat it while absent: on my return I will not spare those who sinned earlier or any of the others,3since you are demanding proof that Christ is speaking through me. He is not weak in dealing with you, but is powerful among you.4For to be sure, he was crucified in weakness, yet he lives by God’s power. Likewise, we are weak in him, yet by God’s power we will live with him in our dealing with you.5Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realise that Christ Jesus is in you – unless, of course, you fail the test?6And I trust that you will discover that we have not failed the test.7Now we pray to God that you will not do anything wrong – not so that people will see that we have stood the test but so that you will do what is right even though we may seem to have failed.8For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth.9We are glad whenever we are weak but you are strong; and our prayer is that you may be fully restored.10This is why I write these things when I am absent, that when I come I may not have to be harsh in my use of authority – the authority the Lord gave me for building you up, not for tearing you down.

11Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice! Strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you.12Greet one another with a holy kiss.13All God’s people here send their greetings.14May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

Och det står i Skriften[1]: ”det krävs två eller tre vittnen för att saken ska avgöras rättvist.”.2Vid mitt andra besök varnade jag dem som hade syndat, och nu varnar jag dem igen när jag är frånvarande. Ja, jag varnar även er andra: när jag kommer till er, ska jag inte visa någon mildhet utan se till att de skyldiga får sitt straff.3Ni vill ju ha bevis för att det är Kristus som talar genom mig, och det ska ni få nu. Ni kommer att märka att Kristus inte är svag mot er, utan att han visar sin kraft hos er.4Det är sant att Kristus var svag när han dog på korset, men han blev levande igen genom Guds kraft. Genom min gemenskap med honom har också jag blivit svag och dött, men jag ska leva tillsammans med honom genom Guds kraft. Och det är den kraften ni ska få uppleva när jag kommer till er.5Pröva er själva för att se om er tro verkligen är äkta. Gör ett test. Om ni inte kan märka att Jesus Kristus lever i er med sin kraft, då är er tro inte äkta.6Men jag hoppas att ni i alla fall ska inse att kraften från Kristus finns i mig när jag kommer till er.7Jag ber att ni ska ta avstånd från allt som är ont, men inte för att det ska visa sig att jag har kraft. Nej, jag ber att ni självmant ska börja göra det som är gott. Det spelar ingen roll om jag på grund av detta verkar kraftlös.8Jag kan ju inte sätta mig emot att ni följer det sanna budskapet om Jesus. Gör ni det, kan jag bara uppmuntra er.9Inget kan göra mig mer glad än att ni har en stark tro, och att jag får verka svag. Det är ju just det som är min bön, att ni ska få en alltmer mogen tro.10Det är också därför jag skriver detta till er redan nu, så att jag ska slippa vara sträng mot er när jag kommer. Om jag slipper straffa er, kan jag ju istället använda den myndighet Herren Jesus har gett mig till att göra er tro ännu starkare.

11Och så till sist, kära syskon: Var glada! Rätta er efter mina förmaningar, så att ni får en alltmer mogen tro. Var eniga och lev i frid med varandra. Då ska Gud, han som ger kärlek och frid, vara med er.12Ge varandra en hälsningskyss som tecken på att ni tillhör Herren.[2] Alla de troende här hälsar till er.13Med önskan om att Herren Jesus Kristus godhet ska följa er, att Gud ska ge er sin kärlek och att hans heliga Ande ska ge er gemenskap med varandra.
