from Biblica1When Jeremiah had finished telling the people all the words of the Lord their God – everything the Lord had sent him to tell them –2Azariah son of Hoshaiah and Johanan son of Kareah and all the arrogant men said to Jeremiah, ‘You are lying! The Lord our God has not sent you to say, “You must not go to Egypt to settle there.”3But Baruch son of Neriah is inciting you against us to hand us over to the Babylonians,[1] so that they may kill us or carry us into exile to Babylon.’4So Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers and all the people disobeyed the Lord’s command to stay in the land of Judah.5Instead, Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers led away all the remnant of Judah who had come back to live in the land of Judah from all the nations where they had been scattered.6They also led away all those whom Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard had left with Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan – the men, the women, the children and the king’s daughters. And they took Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch son of Neriah along with them.7So they entered Egypt in disobedience to the Lord and went as far as Tahpanhes.8In Tahpanhes the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah:9‘While the Jews are watching, take some large stones with you and bury them in clay in the brick pavement at the entrance to Pharaoh’s palace in Tahpanhes.10Then say to them, “This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: I will send for my servant Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and I will set his throne over these stones I have buried here; he will spread his royal canopy above them.11He will come and attack Egypt, bringing death to those destined for death, captivity to those destined for captivity, and the sword to those destined for the sword.12He will set fire to the temples of the gods of Egypt; he will burn their temples and take their gods captive. As a shepherd picks his garment clean of lice, so he will pick Egypt clean and depart.13There in the temple of the sun[2] in Egypt he will demolish the sacred pillars and will burn down the temples of the gods of Egypt.” ’
1Dès que Jérémie eut fini de rapporter à tout le peuple toutes les paroles que l’Eternel leur Dieu l’avait chargé de leur transmettre, c’est-à-dire toutes les paroles rapportées ici,2Azaria, fils de Hoshaya, et Yohanân, fils de Qaréah, et tous ces hommes orgueilleux répondirent à Jérémie: Tu mens! L’Eternel notre Dieu ne t’a pas chargé de nous dire: « N’allez pas émigrer en Egypte. »3C’est Baruch, fils de Nériya, qui t’excite contre nous, il veut nous livrer aux Chaldéens pour qu’ils nous tuent ou qu’ils nous déportent à Babylone.4Ainsi Yohanân, fils de Qaréah, les chefs des troupes, et le reste du peuple n’obéirent pas à l’Eternel: ils ne restèrent pas au pays de Juda.5Yohanân, fils de Qaréah, et tous les chefs des troupes prirent tout le reste de la population de Juda qui était revenue de chez tous les peuples parmi lesquels elle avait été dispersée, pour habiter au pays de Juda;6ils prirent les hommes, les femmes et les enfants, les filles du roi et toutes les personnes que Nebouzaradân, le chef des gardes, avait laissées aux soins de Guedalia, fils d’Ahiqam, petit-fils de Shaphân, ainsi que le prophète Jérémie et Baruch, fils de Nériya;7ils se rendirent en Egypte, désobéissant ainsi à l’Eternel. Ils allèrent jusqu’à Daphné[1]. (2Ki 25:26)
Les prédictions de Jérémie
8Alors l’Eternel adressa la parole à Jérémie à Daphné en ces termes:9Prends quelques grosses pierres et enfouis-les sous les yeux des Juifs dans le sol argileux de la terrasse[2] qui se trouve en face de l’entrée du palais du pharaon, à Daphné.10Puis tu diras à ces gens: Voici ce que déclare le Seigneur des armées célestes, Dieu d’Israël: Je vais faire venir mon serviteur Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone, et j’installerai son trône au-dessus de ces pierres que j’ai enfouies. Il déploiera sa tente royale sur elles.11Oui, il viendra et il frappera l’Egypte, il fera mourir ceux qui sont destinés à mourir, il déportera ceux qui sont destinés à la déportation, et il tuera par l’épée ceux qui sont destinés à périr par l’épée[3].12Je mettrai le feu aux temples des dieux des Egyptiens. Il brûlera les temples[4], et les idoles seront emportées en captivité. Il s’enveloppera de l’Egypte comme un berger s’enveloppe dans son manteau. Après quoi, il repartira tranquillement.13Il mettra en pièces les obélisques sacrés d’Héliopolis[5] en Egypte, et il mettra le feu aux temples des dieux des Egyptiens.
