1During those days another large crowd gathered. They had nothing to eat. So Jesus called for his disciples to come to him. He said,2‘I feel deep concern for these people. They have already been with me three days. They don’t have anything to eat.3If I send them away hungry, they will become too weak on their way home. Some of them have come from far away.’4His disciples answered him. ‘There is nothing here,’ they said. ‘Where can anyone get enough bread to feed them?’5‘How many loaves do you have?’ Jesus asked. ‘Seven’, they replied.6He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. He took the seven loaves and gave thanks to God. Then he broke them and gave them to his disciples. They passed the pieces of bread around to the people.7The disciples also had a few small fish. Jesus gave thanks for them too. He told the disciples to pass them around.8The people ate and were satisfied. After that, the disciples picked up seven baskets of leftover pieces.9About 4,000 people were there. After Jesus sent them away,10he got into a boat with his disciples. He went to the area of Dalmanutha.11The Pharisees came and began to ask Jesus questions. They wanted to test him. So they asked him for a sign from heaven.12He sighed deeply. He said, ‘Why do you people ask for a sign? What I’m about to tell you is true. No sign will be given to you.’13Then he left them. He got back into the boat and crossed to the other side of the lake.
The yeast of the Pharisees and Herod
14The disciples had forgotten to bring bread. They had only one loaf with them in the boat.15‘Be careful’, Jesus warned them. ‘Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees. And watch out for the yeast of Herod.’16They talked about this with each other. They said, ‘He must be saying this because we don’t have any bread.’17Jesus knew what they were saying. So he asked them, ‘Why are you talking about having no bread? Why can’t you see or understand? Are you stubborn?18Do you have eyes and still don’t see? Do you have ears and still don’t hear? And don’t you remember?19Earlier I broke five loaves for the 5,000. How many baskets of pieces did you pick up?’ ‘Twelve’, they replied.20‘Later I broke seven loaves for the 4,000. How many baskets of pieces did you pick up?’ ‘Seven’, they answered.21He said to them, ‘Can’t you understand yet?’
Jesus heals a blind man at Bethsaida
22Jesus and his disciples came to Bethsaida. Some people brought a blind man to him. They begged Jesus to touch him.23He took the blind man by the hand. Then he led him outside the village. He spat on the man’s eyes and placed his hands on him. ‘Do you see anything?’ Jesus asked.24The man looked up. He said, ‘I see people. They look like trees walking around.’25Once more Jesus put his hands on the man’s eyes. Then his eyes were opened so that he could see again. He saw everything clearly.26Jesus sent him home. He told him, ‘Don’t even go into the village.’
Peter says that Jesus is the Messiah
27Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, ‘Who do people say I am?’28They replied, ‘Some say John the Baptist. Others say Elijah. Still others say one of the prophets.’29‘But what about you?’ he asked. ‘Who do you say I am?’ Peter answered, ‘You are the Messiah.’30Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.
Jesus tells about his coming death
31Jesus then began to teach his disciples. He taught them that the Son of Man must suffer many things. He taught them that the elders would not accept him. The chief priests and the teachers of the law would not accept him either. He must be killed and after three days rise again.32He spoke clearly about this. Peter took Jesus to one side and began to scold him.33Jesus turned and looked at his disciples. He scolded Peter. ‘Get behind me, Satan!’ he said. ‘You are not thinking about the things God cares about. Instead, you are thinking only about the things humans care about.’
You must pick up your cross
34Jesus called the crowd to him along with his disciples. He said, ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must say no to themselves. They must pick up their cross and follow me.35Whoever wants to save their life will lose it. But whoever loses their life for me and for the good news will save it.36What good is it if someone gains the whole world but loses their soul?37Or what can anyone trade for their soul?38Suppose anyone is ashamed of me and my words among these adulterous and sinful people. Then the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.’

Seconda moltiplicazione dei pani
1In quei giorni c’era di nuovo una folla grandissima, e poiché non avevano da mangiare, Gesù, chiamati a sé i discepoli, disse loro:2«Io ho pietà di questa gente; poiché da tre giorni sta con me e non ha da mangiare.3Se li rimando a casa digiuni, verranno meno per strada; e alcuni di loro sono venuti da lontano».4I suoi discepoli gli risposero: «Come si potrebbe mai saziarli di pane qui, in un deserto?»5Egli domandò loro: «Quanti pani avete?» Essi dissero: «Sette».6Egli ordinò alla folla di accomodarsi per terra; e presi i sette pani, dopo aver reso grazie, li spezzò e li diede ai suoi discepoli perché li distribuissero; ed essi li distribuirono alla folla.7Avevano anche pochi pesciolini; ed egli, dopo averli benedetti, comandò di distribuire anche quelli.8Così mangiarono e furono saziati; e dei pezzi avanzati si raccolsero sette panieri.9Erano circa quattromila persone. Poi Gesù li congedò.
I farisei chiedono un segno
10E subito, salito sulla barca con i suoi discepoli, andò dalle parti di Dalmanuta.11Allora vennero i farisei e si misero a discutere con lui, chiedendogli, per metterlo alla prova, un segno dal cielo.12Ma egli, dopo aver sospirato nel suo spirito, disse: «Perché questa generazione chiede un segno? In verità io vi dico: nessun segno sarà dato a questa generazione».13E, lasciatili, salì di nuovo sulla barca e passò all’altra riva.14I discepoli avevano nella barca solo un pane, perché avevano dimenticato di prenderne degli altri.15Egli li ammoniva dicendo: «Guardatevi dal lievito dei farisei e dal lievito di Erode!»16Ed essi si dicevano gli uni agli altri: «È perché non abbiamo pane».17Ma egli, accortosene, disse loro: «Perché state a discutere del non aver pane? Non riflettete e non capite ancora? Avete il cuore indurito?18Avete occhi e non vedete, avete orecchi e non udite[1]? E non vi ricordate?19Quando io spezzai i cinque pani per i cinquemila, quante ceste piene di pezzi raccoglieste?» Essi gli dissero: «Dodici».20«Quando spezzai i sette pani per i quattromila, quanti panieri pieni di pezzi raccoglieste?» Essi {gli} risposero: «Sette».21E diceva loro: «Non capite ancora?»
Gesù guarisce un cieco
22Giunsero a Betsaida, e gli condussero un cieco, pregandolo di toccarlo.23Egli, preso il cieco per la mano, lo condusse fuori dal villaggio, gli sputò sugli occhi, pose le mani su di lui e gli domandò: «Vedi qualche cosa?»24Egli aprì gli occhi e disse: «Scorgo gli uomini, perché vedo come alberi che camminano».25Allora gli pose di nuovo le mani sugli occhi; ed egli guardò e fu guarito e vedeva ogni cosa chiaramente.26Gesù lo rimandò a casa sua e gli disse: «Non entrare neppure nel villaggio».
Pietro riconosce in Gesù il Cristo
27Poi Gesù se ne andò, con i suoi discepoli, verso i villaggi di Cesarea di Filippo; strada facendo domandò ai suoi discepoli: «Chi dice la gente che io sia?»28Essi gli dissero: «Alcuni, Giovanni il battista; altri, Elia, e altri, uno dei profeti.29Egli domandò loro: «E voi, chi dite che io sia?» E Pietro gli rispose: «Tu sei il Cristo».30Ed egli ordinò loro di non parlare di lui a nessuno.
Il prezzo del discepolato
31Poi cominciò a insegnare loro che era necessario che il Figlio dell’uomo soffrisse molte cose, fosse respinto dagli anziani, dai capi dei sacerdoti e dagli scribi, fosse ucciso e dopo tre giorni risuscitasse.32Diceva queste cose apertamente. Pietro lo prese da parte e cominciò a rimproverarlo.33Ma Gesù si voltò e, guardando i suoi discepoli, rimproverò Pietro dicendo: «Vattene via da me, Satana! Tu non hai il senso delle cose di Dio, ma delle cose degli uomini».34Chiamata a sé la folla con i suoi discepoli, disse loro: «Se uno vuol venire dietro a me, rinunci a se stesso, prenda la sua croce e mi segua.35Perché chi vorrà salvare la sua vita, la perderà; ma chi perderà la sua vita per causa mia e del vangelo, la salverà.36E che giova all’uomo se guadagna tutto il mondo e perde l’anima sua?37Infatti che darebbe l’uomo in cambio della sua anima?38Perché se uno si sarà vergognato di me e delle mie parole in questa generazione adultera e peccatrice, anche il Figlio dell’uomo si vergognerà di lui quando verrà nella gloria del Padre suo con i santi angeli».
