1Jesus called together the 12 disciples. He gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to heal diseases.2Then he sent them out to announce God’s kingdom and to heal those who were ill.3He told them, ‘Don’t take anything for the journey. Do not take a walking stick or a bag. Do not take any bread, money or extra clothes.4When you are invited into a house, stay there until you leave town.5Some people may not welcome you. If they don’t, leave their town and shake the dust off your feet. This will be a witness against the people living there.’6So the 12 disciples left. They went from village to village. They announced the good news and healed people everywhere.7Now Herod, the ruler of Galilee, heard about everything that was going on. He was bewildered, because some were saying that John the Baptist had been raised from the dead.8Others were saying that Elijah had appeared. Still others were saying that a prophet of long ago had come back to life.9But Herod said, ‘I had John’s head cut off. So who is it that I hear such things about?’ And he tried to see Jesus.
Jesus feeds the five thousand
10The disciples returned. They told Jesus what they had done. Then he took them with him. They went off by themselves to a town called Bethsaida.11But the crowds learned about it and followed Jesus. He welcomed them and spoke to them about God’s kingdom. He also healed those who needed to be healed.12Late in the afternoon the 12 disciples came to him. They said, ‘Send the crowd away. They can go to the nearby villages and countryside. There they can find food and a place to stay. There is nothing here.’13Jesus replied, ‘You give them something to eat.’ The disciples answered, ‘We have only five loaves of bread and two fish. We would have to go and buy food for all this crowd.’14About 5,000 men were there. But Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Have them sit down in groups of about 50 each.’15The disciples did so, and everyone sat down.16Jesus took the five loaves and the two fish. He looked up to heaven and gave thanks. He broke them into pieces. Then he gave them to the disciples to give to the people.17All of them ate and were satisfied. The disciples picked up 12 baskets of leftover pieces.
Peter says that Jesus is the Messiah
18One day Jesus was praying alone. Only his disciples were with him. He asked them, ‘Who do the crowds say I am?’19They replied, ‘Some say John the Baptist. Others say Elijah. Still others say that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life.’20‘But what about you?’ he asked. ‘Who do you say I am?’ Peter answered, ‘God’s Messiah.’
Jesus speaks about his coming death
21Jesus strongly warned them not to tell this to anyone.22He said, ‘The Son of Man must suffer many things. The elders will not accept him. The chief priests and the teachers of the law will not accept him either. He must be killed and on the third day rise from the dead.’23Then he said to all of them, ‘Whoever wants to follow me must say no to themselves. They must pick up their cross every day and follow me.24Whoever wants to save their life will lose it. But whoever loses their life for me will save it.25What good is it if someone gains the whole world but loses or gives up their very self?26Suppose someone is ashamed of me and my words. The Son of Man will come in his glory and in the glory of the Father and the holy angels. Then he will be ashamed of that person.27‘What I’m about to tell you is true. Some who are standing here will not die before they see God’s kingdom.’
Jesus’ appearance is changed
28About eight days after Jesus said this, he went up on a mountain to pray. He took Peter, John and James with him.29As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed. His clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning.30Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in shining glory. Jesus and the two of them talked together.31They talked about how he would be leaving them soon. This was going to happen in Jerusalem.32Peter and his companions had been very sleepy. But then they became completely awake. They saw Jesus’ glory and the two men standing with him.33As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter spoke up. ‘Master’, he said to him, ‘it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters. One will be for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.’ Peter didn’t really know what he was saying.34While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and covered them. The disciples were afraid as they entered the cloud.35A voice came from the cloud. It said, ‘This is my Son, and I have chosen him. Listen to him.’36When the voice had spoken, they found that Jesus was alone. The disciples kept quiet about this. They didn’t tell anyone at that time what they had seen.
Jesus heals a boy who is controlled by an evil spirit
37The next day Jesus and those who were with him came down from the mountain. A large crowd met Jesus.38A man in the crowd called out. ‘Teacher’, he said, ‘I beg you to look at my son. He is my only child.39A spirit takes hold of him, and he suddenly screams. It throws him into fits so that he foams at the mouth. It hardly ever leaves him. It is destroying him.40I begged your disciples to drive it out. But they couldn’t do it.’41‘You unbelieving and evil people!’ Jesus replied. ‘How long do I have to stay with you? How long do I have to put up with you?’ Then he said to the man, ‘Bring your son here.’42Even while the boy was coming, the demon threw him into a fit. The boy fell to the ground. But Jesus ordered the evil spirit to leave the boy. Then Jesus healed him and gave him back to his father.
Jesus speaks a second time about his coming death
43They were all amazed at God’s greatness. Everyone was wondering about all that Jesus did. Then Jesus said to his disciples,44‘Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you. The Son of Man is going to be handed over to men.’45But they didn’t understand what this meant. That was because it was hidden from them. And they were afraid to ask Jesus about it.
Who is the most important person?
46The disciples began to argue about which one of them would be the most important person.47Jesus knew what they were thinking. So he took a little child and stood the child beside him.48Then he spoke to them. ‘Anyone who welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me,’ he said. ‘And anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. The one considered least important among all of you is really the most important.’49‘Master’, said John, ‘we saw someone driving out demons in your name. We tried to stop him, because he is not one of us.’50‘Do not stop him,’ Jesus said. ‘Anyone who is not against you is for you.’
The Samaritans do not welcome Jesus
51The time grew near for Jesus to be taken up to heaven. So he made up his mind to go to Jerusalem.52He sent messengers on ahead. They went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him.53But the people there did not welcome Jesus. That was because he was heading for Jerusalem.54The disciples James and John saw this. They asked, ‘Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to destroy them?’55But Jesus turned and commanded them not to do it.56Then Jesus and his disciples went on to another village.
The cost of following Jesus
57Once Jesus and those who were with him were walking along the road. A man said to Jesus, ‘I will follow you no matter where you go.’58Jesus replied, ‘Foxes have dens. Birds have nests. But the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.’59He said to another man, ‘Follow me.’ But the man replied, ‘Lord, first let me go and bury my father.’60Jesus said to him, ‘Let dead people bury their own dead. You go and tell others about God’s kingdom.’61Still another person said, ‘I will follow you, Lord. But first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.’62Jesus replied, ‘Suppose someone starts to plough and then looks back. That person is not fit for service in God’s kingdom.’

La missione dei dodici apostoli
1Gesù, convocati i dodici, diede loro potere e autorità su tutti i demòni e di guarire le malattie.2Li mandò ad annunciare il regno di Dio e a guarire {i malati}.3E disse loro: «Non prendete nulla per il viaggio: né bastone, né sacca, né pane, né denaro, e non abbiate tunica di ricambio.4In qualunque casa entrerete, rimanete lì e da lì ripartite.5Quanto a quelli che non vi riceveranno, uscendo da quella città, scuotete la polvere dai vostri piedi[1], in testimonianza contro di loro».6Ed essi, partiti, andavano di villaggio in villaggio, evangelizzando e operando guarigioni dappertutto.
Perplessità di Erode
7Erode il tetrarca udì parlare di tutti quei fatti; ne era perplesso, perché alcuni dicevano: «Giovanni è risuscitato dai morti»,8altri dicevano: «È apparso Elia» e altri: «È risuscitato uno degli antichi profeti».9Ma Erode disse: «Giovanni l’ho fatto decapitare; chi è dunque costui del quale sento dire queste cose?» E cercava di vederlo.
Moltiplicazione dei pani per cinquemila uomini
10Gli apostoli ritornarono e raccontarono a Gesù tutte le cose che avevano fatte; ed egli li prese con sé e si ritirò in disparte verso una città chiamata Betsàida.11Ma le folle, avendolo saputo, lo seguirono; ed egli li accolse e parlava loro del regno di Dio, e guariva quelli che avevano bisogno di guarigione.12Or il giorno cominciava a declinare; e i dodici, avvicinatisi, gli dissero: «Lascia andare la folla, perché se ne vada per i villaggi e per le campagne vicine per trovarvi cibo e alloggio, perché qui siamo in un luogo deserto».13Ma egli disse loro: «Date loro voi da mangiare». Ed essi obiettarono: «Noi non abbiamo altro che cinque pani e due pesci; a meno che non andiamo noi a comprare dei viveri per tutta questa gente».14Perché c’erano circa cinquemila uomini. Ed egli disse ai suoi discepoli: «Fateli sedere a gruppi di una cinquantina».15E così li fecero accomodare tutti.16Poi Gesù prese i cinque pani e i due pesci, alzò lo sguardo al cielo e li benedisse, li spezzò e li diede ai suoi discepoli perché li distribuissero alla gente.17Tutti mangiarono e furono saziati, e dei pezzi avanzati si portarono via dodici ceste.
Pietro riconosce in Gesù il Cristo
18Mentre egli stava pregando in disparte, i discepoli erano con lui; ed egli domandò loro: «Chi dice la gente che io sia?»19E quelli risposero: «Alcuni dicono Giovanni il battista; altri, Elia, e altri, uno dei profeti antichi che è risuscitato».20Ed egli disse loro: «E voi, chi dite che io sia?» Pietro rispose: «Il Cristo di Dio».21Ed egli ordinò loro di non dirlo a nessuno, e aggiunse:22«Bisogna che il Figlio dell’uomo soffra molte cose e sia respinto dagli anziani, dai capi dei sacerdoti e dagli scribi, sia ucciso e risusciti il terzo giorno».
Il prezzo del discepolato
23Diceva poi a tutti: «Se uno vuol venire dietro a me, rinunci a se stesso, prenda ogni giorno la sua croce e mi segua.24Perché chi vorrà salvare la sua vita la perderà, ma chi avrà perduto la propria vita per causa mia la salverà.25Infatti, che serve all’uomo guadagnare tutto il mondo, se poi perde o rovina se stesso?26Perché se uno ha vergogna di me e delle mie parole, il Figlio dell’uomo avrà vergogna di lui, quando verrà nella gloria sua e del Padre e dei santi angeli.27Ora io vi dico in verità che alcuni di quelli che sono qui presenti non gusteranno la morte, finché non abbiano visto il regno di Dio».
La trasfigurazione
28Circa otto giorni dopo questi discorsi, Gesù prese con sé Pietro, Giovanni e Giacomo, e salì sul monte a pregare.29Mentre pregava, l’aspetto del suo volto fu mutato e la sua veste divenne di un candore sfolgorante.30Ed ecco, due uomini conversavano con lui: erano Mosè ed Elia,31i quali, apparsi in gloria, parlavano della sua dipartita che stava per compiersi in Gerusalemme.32Pietro e quelli che erano con lui erano oppressi dal sonno; e, quando si furono svegliati, videro la sua gloria e i due uomini che erano con lui.33Come questi si separavano da lui, Pietro disse a Gesù: «Maestro, è bene che stiamo qui; facciamo tre tende: una per te, una per Mosè e una per Elia». Egli non sapeva quello che diceva.34Mentre parlava così, venne una nuvola che li avvolse; e i discepoli temettero quando essi entrarono nella nuvola.35E una voce venne dalla nuvola, dicendo: «Questo è mio Figlio, colui che io ho scelto; ascoltatelo».36Mentre la voce parlava, Gesù si trovò solo. Ed essi tacquero e in quei giorni non riferirono nulla a nessuno di quello che avevano visto.
Guarigione di un indemoniato
37Il giorno seguente, quando essi scesero dal monte, una gran folla andò incontro a Gesù.38Un uomo dalla folla gridò: «Maestro, ti prego, volgi lo sguardo a mio figlio: è l’unico che io abbia.39Ecco, uno spirito si impadronisce di lui e subito egli grida; e lo spirito lo contorce, facendolo schiumare, e a fatica si allontana da lui, dopo averlo straziato.40Ho pregato i tuoi discepoli di scacciarlo, ma non hanno potuto».41Gesù rispose: «O generazione incredula e perversa, fino a quando sarò con voi e vi sopporterò? Porta qui tuo figlio».42Mentre il ragazzo si avvicinava, il demonio lo gettò per terra e cominciò a contorcerlo con le convulsioni; ma Gesù sgridò lo spirito immondo, guarì il ragazzo e lo rese a suo padre.43E tutti rimasero sbalorditi della grandezza di Dio. Mentre tutti si meravigliavano di tutte le cose che Gesù faceva, egli disse ai suoi discepoli:44«Voi, tenete bene in mente queste parole: il Figlio dell’uomo sta per essere consegnato nelle mani degli uomini».45Ma essi non capivano queste parole che erano per loro velate, così da risultare incomprensibili, e temevano di interrogarlo su quanto aveva detto.
L’umiltà, segreto della vera grandezza; condanna dello spirito settario
46Poi cominciarono a discutere su chi di loro fosse il più grande.47Ma Gesù, conosciuto il pensiero del loro cuore, prese un bambino, se lo pose accanto e disse loro:48«Chi riceve questo bambino nel nome mio, riceve me; e chi riceve me, riceve Colui che mi ha mandato. Perché chi è il più piccolo tra tutti voi, quello è grande».49Allora Giovanni disse: «Maestro, noi abbiamo visto un tale che scacciava demòni nel tuo nome, e glielo abbiamo vietato perché non ti segue con noi».50Ma Gesù gli disse: «Non glielo vietate, perché chi non è contro di voi è per voi».
Gesù in Samaria
51Poi, mentre si avvicinava il tempo in cui sarebbe stato tolto dal mondo, Gesù si mise risolutamente in cammino per andare a Gerusalemme.52Mandò davanti a sé dei messaggeri, i quali, partiti, entrarono in un villaggio dei Samaritani per preparargli un alloggio.53Ma quelli non lo ricevettero perché era diretto verso Gerusalemme[2].54Veduto ciò, i suoi discepoli Giacomo e Giovanni dissero: «Signore, vuoi che diciamo che un fuoco scenda dal cielo e li consumi?»55Ma egli si voltò verso di loro e li sgridò.56E se ne andarono in un altro villaggio.
Come seguire Gesù
57Mentre camminavano per la via, qualcuno gli disse: «Io ti seguirò dovunque andrai».58E Gesù gli rispose: «Le volpi hanno delle tane e gli uccelli del cielo dei nidi, ma il Figlio dell’uomo non ha dove posare il capo».59A un altro disse: «Seguimi». Ed egli rispose: «{Signore,} permettimi di andare prima a seppellire mio padre».60Ma egli gli disse: «Lascia che i morti seppelliscano i loro morti; ma tu va’ ad annunciare il regno di Dio».61Un altro ancora gli disse: «Ti seguirò, Signore, ma lasciami prima salutare quelli di casa mia».62Ma Gesù {gli disse}: «Nessuno che abbia messo la mano all’aratro e poi volga lo sguardo indietro è adatto per il regno di Dio».
