Rahab helps the spies

1 Joshua, the son of Nun, sent two spies from Shittim. He sent them in secret. He said to them, ‘Go and look over the land. Most of all, check out Jericho.’ So they went to Jericho. They stayed at the house of a prostitute. Her name was Rahab. 2 The king of Jericho was told, ‘Look! Some of the Israelites have come here tonight. They’ve come to check out the land.’ 3 So the king sent a message to Rahab. It said, ‘Bring out the men who came into your house. They’ve come to check out the whole land.’ 4 But the woman had hidden the two men. She said, ‘It’s true that the men came here. But I didn’t know where they had come from. 5 They left at sunset, when it was time to close the city gate. I don’t know which way they went. Go after them quickly. You might catch up with them.’ 6 But in fact she had taken them up on the roof. There she had hidden them under some flax she had piled up. 7 The king’s men left to hunt down the spies. They took the road that leads to where the River Jordan can be crossed. As soon as they had gone out of the city, the gate was shut. 8 Rahab went up on the roof before the spies settled down for the night. 9 She said to them, ‘I know that the LORD has given you this land. We are very much afraid of you. Everyone who lives in this country is weak with fear because of you. 10 We’ve heard how the LORD dried up the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt. We’ve heard what you did to Sihon and Og, the two Amorite kings. They ruled east of the River Jordan. You completely destroyed them. 11 When we heard about it, we were terrified. Because of you, we aren’t brave anymore. The LORD your God is the God who rules in heaven above and on the earth below. 12 ‘Now then, please give me your word. Promise me in the name of the LORD that you will be kind to my family. I’ve been kind to you. Promise me 13 that you will spare the lives of my father and mother. Spare my brothers and sisters. Also spare everyone in their families. Promise that you won’t put any of us to death.’ 14 So the men made a promise to her. ‘If you save our lives, we’ll save yours,’ they said. ‘Just don’t tell anyone what we’re doing. Then we’ll be kind and faithful to you when the LORD gives us the land.’ 15 The house Rahab lived in was part of the city wall. So she let the spies down by a rope through the window. 16 She said to them, ‘Go up into the hills. The men chasing you won’t be able to find you. Hide yourselves there for three days until they return. Then you can go on your way.’ 17 The spies had said to her, ‘You made us give our word. But we won’t keep our promise 18 unless you do what we say. When we enter the land, you must tie this bright red rope in the window. Tie it in the window you let us down through. Bring your father and mother into your house. Also bring in your brothers and everyone else in your family. 19 None of you must go out into the street. If you do, anything that happens to you will be your own fault. We won’t be responsible. But if anyone hurts someone who is inside the house with you, it will be our fault. We will be responsible. 20 Don’t tell anyone what we’re doing. If you do, we won’t have to keep the promise you asked us to make.’ 21 ‘I agree’, Rahab replied. ‘I’ll do as you say.’ So she sent them away, and they left. Then she tied the bright red rope in the window. 22 When the spies left, they went up into the hills. They stayed there for three days. By that time the men chasing them had searched all along the road. They couldn’t find them. So they returned. 23 Then the two spies started back. They went down out of the hills. They went across the River Jordan. They came to Joshua, the son of Nun. They told him everything that had happened to them. 24 They said, ‘We’re sure the LORD has given the whole land over to us. All the people there are weak with fear because of us.’

Raab nasconde i due esploratori a Gerico

1 Or Giosuè, figlio di Nun, mandò segretamente da Sittim due spie e disse loro: «Andate, esaminate il paese e Gerico». Quelle andarono ed entrarono in casa di una prostituta di nome Raab, e vi alloggiarono. 2 Ciò fu riferito al re di Gerico, e gli fu detto: «Ecco, alcuni uomini dei figli d’Israele sono venuti qui per esplorare il paese». 3 Allora il re di Gerico mandò a dire a Raab: «Fa’ uscire quegli uomini che sono venuti da te e sono entrati in casa tua; perché sono venuti a esplorare tutto il paese». 4 Ma la donna prese quei due uomini, li nascose e disse: «È vero, quegli uomini sono venuti in casa mia, ma io non sapevo di dove fossero; 5 e quando si stava per chiudere la porta della città all’imbrunire, quegli uomini sono usciti; dove siano andati non so; rincorreteli senza perdere tempo, e li raggiungerete». 6 Lei invece li aveva fatti salire sulla terrazza e li aveva nascosti sotto gli steli di lino che vi aveva ammucchiato. 7 E la gente li rincorse per la via che porta ai guadi del Giordano; e, dopo che i loro inseguitori furono usciti, la porta della città fu chiusa. 8 Prima che le spie si addormentassero, Raab salì da loro sulla terrazza, 9 e disse a quegli uomini: «Io so che il Signore vi ha dato il paese, che il terrore del vostro nome ci ha invasi e che tutti gli abitanti del paese hanno perso coraggio davanti a voi. 10 Poiché noi abbiamo udito come il Signore asciugò le acque del mar Rosso davanti a voi, quando usciste dall’Egitto, e quel che faceste ai due re degli Amorei, di là dal Giordano, Sicon e Og, che votaste allo sterminio. 11 Appena lo abbiamo udito, il nostro cuore è venuto meno e non è più rimasto coraggio in alcuno per causa vostra; poiché il Signore, il vostro Dio, è Dio lassù nei cieli e quaggiù sulla terra. 12 Vi prego dunque, giuratemi per il Signore, poiché vi ho trattati con bontà, che anche voi tratterete con bontà la casa di mio padre; e datemi un segno sicuro 13 che salverete la vita a mio padre, a mia madre, ai miei fratelli, alle mie sorelle e a tutto quel che appartiene a loro, e che ci preserverete dalla morte». 14 Quegli uomini risposero: «Siamo pronti a dare la nostra vita per voi, se non divulgate questo nostro affare; e quando il Signore ci avrà dato il paese, noi ti tratteremo con bontà e lealtà». 15 Allora lei li calò giù dalla finestra con una fune; infatti la sua casa era addossata alle mura della città, e lei stava di casa sulle mura. 16 E disse loro: «Andate verso il monte, affinché non v’incontrino i vostri inseguitori, e rimanetevi nascosti per tre giorni fino al ritorno di coloro che v’inseguono; poi andrete per la vostra strada». 17 E quegli uomini le dissero: «Noi saremo sciolti dal giuramento che ci hai fatto fare, se tu non osservi quello che stiamo per dirti: 18 quando entreremo nel paese, attaccherai alla finestra per la quale ci fai scendere, questa cordicella di filo rosso; radunerai presso di te, in casa, tuo padre, tua madre, i tuoi fratelli e tutta la famiglia di tuo padre. 19 Se qualcuno di questi uscirà in strada dalla porta di casa tua, il suo sangue ricadrà sul suo capo, e noi non ne avremo colpa; ma il sangue di chiunque sarà con te in casa ricadrà sul nostro capo, se uno gli metterà le mani addosso. 20 Se tu divulghi questo nostro affare, saremo sciolti dal giuramento che ci hai fatto fare». 21 E lei disse: «Sia come dite!» Poi li congedò, e quelli se ne andarono. E lei attaccò la cordicella rossa alla finestra. 22 Quelli dunque partirono e se ne andarono al monte, dove rimasero tre giorni, fino al ritorno di quelli che li rincorrevano, i quali li cercarono per tutta la strada, ma non li trovarono. 23 E quei due uomini ritornarono, scesero dal monte, oltrepassarono il Giordano, andarono da Giosuè, figlio di Nun, e gli raccontarono tutto quello che era loro successo. 24 Essi dissero a Giosuè: «Certo, il Signore ha dato in nostra mano tutto il paese; e già tutti gli abitanti del paese hanno perso coraggio davanti a noi».
