Land for the tribes west of the River Jordan

1 The rest of the tribes of Israel received their shares of land in Canaan. Eleazar the priest and Joshua, the son of Nun, decided what each of the tribes should receive. The leaders of the tribes helped them make these decisions. 2 The shares of nine tribes and half of the tribe of Manasseh were decided by casting lots. That’s what the LORD had commanded through Moses. 3 Moses had given two tribes and the other half of the tribe of Manasseh their shares east of the River Jordan. But Moses had not given the Levites a share among the other tribes. 4 Manasseh and Ephraim were the sons of Joseph. They had become two tribes. The Levites didn’t receive any share of the land. They only received towns to live in and grasslands for their flocks and herds. 5 So the Israelites divided up the land, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.

Joshua gives Hebron to Caleb

6 The people of Judah approached Joshua at Gilgal. Caleb, the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, spoke to Joshua. He said, ‘You know what the LORD said to Moses, the man of God. He spoke to him at Kadesh Barnea about you and me. 7 Moses, the servant of the LORD, sent me from Kadesh Barnea to check out the land. I was 40 years old at that time. I brought back an honest report to him. I told him exactly what I had seen. 8 Several other men of Israel went up with me. What they reported terrified the people. But I followed the LORD my God with my whole heart. 9 So on that day Moses made a promise to me. He said, “The land you have walked on will be your share. It will be the share of your children for ever. That’s because you have followed the LORD my God with your whole heart.” (De 1:36) 10 ‘The LORD has done just as he promised. He made the promise while Israel was wandering around in the desert. That was 45 years ago. He has kept me alive all this time. So here I am today, 85 years old! 11 I’m still as strong today as I was the day Moses sent me out. I’m just as able to go out to battle now as I was then. 12 So give me this hill country. The LORD promised it to me that day. At that time you yourself heard that the Anakites were living there. You also heard that their cities were large and had high walls around them. But I’ll drive them out, just as the LORD said I would. He will help me do it.’ 13 Then Joshua blessed Caleb, the son of Jephunneh. He gave him Hebron as his share. 14 So ever since that time Hebron has belonged to Caleb, the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite. That’s because he followed the LORD, the God of Israel, with his whole heart. 15 Hebron used to be called Kiriath Arba. It was named after Arba. He was the greatest man among the Anakites. So the land had peace and rest.

1 Queste sono le terre che i figli d’Israele ebbero come eredità nel paese di Canaan, e che il sacerdote Eleazar, Giosuè figlio di Nun e i capifamiglia delle tribù dei figli d’Israele distribuirono loro. 2 L’eredità fu distribuita a sorte, come il Signore aveva comandato per mezzo di Mosè, alle nove tribù e alla mezza tribù, 3 perché alle altre due tribù e alla mezza tribù Mosè aveva dato un’eredità di là dal Giordano; ai Leviti non aveva dato, tra i figli d’Israele, nessuna eredità; 4 i figli di Giuseppe formavano due tribù: Manasse ed Efraim; ai Leviti non fu data nessuna parte del paese, tranne le città per abitarvi, con le campagne circostanti per il proprio bestiame e i loro averi. 5 I figli d’Israele fecero come il Signore aveva comandato a Mosè, e spartirono il paese.

Il territorio di Ebron assegnato a Caleb

6 I figli di Giuda si avvicinarono a Giosuè a Ghilgal; e Caleb, figlio di Gefunne, il Chenizeo, gli disse: «Tu sai quel che il Signore disse a Mosè, uomo di Dio, riguardo a me e a te a Cades-Barnea. 7 Io avevo quarant’anni quando Mosè, servo del Signore, mi mandò da Cades-Barnea a esplorare il paese e io gli feci la mia relazione con sincerità di cuore. 8 I miei fratelli, che erano saliti con me, scoraggiarono il popolo, ma io seguii pienamente il Signore, il mio Dio. 9 In quel giorno Mosè fece questo giuramento: “La terra che il tuo piede ha calcata sarà eredità tua e dei tuoi figli per sempre, perché hai pienamente seguito il Signore, il mio Dio”. 10 E ora ecco, il Signore mi ha conservato in vita, come aveva detto, durante i quarantacinque anni ormai trascorsi da quando il Signore disse quella parola a Mosè, mentre Israele camminava nel deserto; e ora ecco che ho ottantacinque anni; 11 oggi sono ancora robusto com’ero il giorno in cui Mosè mi mandò; le mie forze sono le stesse di allora, tanto per combattere quanto per andare e venire. 12 Dammi dunque questo monte del quale il Signore parlò quel giorno, poiché tu udisti allora che vi stanno degli Anachiti e che vi sono delle città grandi e fortificate. Forse il Signore sarà con me, e io li scaccerò, come disse il Signore». 13 Allora Giosuè lo benedisse, e diede Ebron come eredità a Caleb, figlio di Gefunne. 14 Per questo Caleb, figlio di Gefunne, il Chenizeo, ha avuto Ebron come eredità, fino a oggi: perché aveva pienamente seguito il Signore, il Dio d’Israele. 15 Ebron si chiamava in passato Chiriat-Arba; Arba era stato l’uomo più grande fra gli Anachiti. E nel paese cessò la guerra.
