Jeremiah’s enemies try to have him killed

1 A message from the LORD came to Jeremiah. It was shortly after Jehoiakim became king of Judah. He was the son of Josiah. 2 The LORD said to Jeremiah, ‘Stand in the courtyard of my house. Speak to the people of the towns in Judah. Speak to all those who come to worship in my house. Tell them everything I command you. Do not leave out a single word. 3 Perhaps they will listen. Maybe they will turn from their evil ways. Then I will not do what I said I would. I will not bring trouble on them. I had planned to punish them because of the evil things they had done. 4 Tell them, “The LORD says, ‘Listen to me. Obey my law that I gave you. 5 And listen to the words my servants the prophets are speaking. I have sent them to you again and again. But you have not listened to them. 6 So I will make this house like Shiloh. All the nations on earth will use the name of this city in a curse.’ ” ’ 7 Jeremiah spoke these words in the LORD’s house. The priests, the prophets and all the people heard him. 8 Jeremiah finished telling all the people everything the LORD had commanded him to say. But as soon as he did, the priests, the prophets and all the people grabbed him. They said, ‘You must die! 9 Why do you prophesy these things in the LORD’s name? Why do you say that this house will become like Shiloh? Why do you say that this city will be empty and deserted?’ And all the people crowded around Jeremiah in the LORD’s house. 10 The officials of Judah heard what had happened. So they went up from the royal palace to the LORD’s house. There they took their places at the entrance of the New Gate. 11 Then the priests and prophets spoke to the officials and all the people. They said, ‘This man should be sentenced to death. He has prophesied against this city. You have heard it with your own ears!’ 12 Then Jeremiah spoke to all the officials and people. He said, ‘The LORD sent me to prophesy against this house and this city. He told me to say everything you have heard. 13 So change the way you live and act. Obey the LORD your God. Then he won’t do what he said he would. He won’t bring on you the trouble he said he would bring. 14 As for me, I’m in your hands. Do to me what you think is good and right. 15 But you can be sure of one thing. If you put me to death, you will be held responsible for spilling my blood. And I haven’t even done anything wrong. You will bring guilt on yourselves and this city and those who live in it. The LORD has sent me to you. He wanted me to say all these things so you could hear them. And that’s the truth.’ 16 Then the officials and all the people spoke to the priests and prophets. They said, ‘This man shouldn’t be sentenced to death! He has spoken to us in the name of the LORD our God.’ 17 Some of the elders of the land stepped forward. They spoke to the whole community gathered there. They said, 18 ‘Micah from Moresheth prophesied. It was during the time Hezekiah was king over Judah. Micah spoke to all the people of Judah. He told them, “The LORD who rules over all says, ‘ “ ‘Zion will be ploughed up like a field. Jerusalem will be turned into a pile of rubble. The temple hill will be covered with bushes and weeds.’ ” (Mic 3:12) 19 Did King Hezekiah or anyone else in Judah put Micah to death? Hezekiah had respect for the LORD and tried to please him. And the LORD didn’t judge Jerusalem as he said he would. He didn’t bring on it the trouble he said he would bring. But we are about to bring horrible trouble on ourselves!’ 20 Uriah was another man who prophesied in the name of the LORD. He was from Kiriath Jearim. He was the son of Shemaiah. Uriah prophesied against this city and this land. He said the same things Jeremiah did. 21 King Jehoiakim and all his officers and officials heard Uriah’s words. So the king decided to put him to death. But Uriah heard about it. He was afraid. And he ran away to Egypt. 22 So King Jehoiakim sent Elnathan to Egypt. He also sent some other men along with him. Elnathan was the son of Akbor. 23 Those men brought Uriah out of Egypt. They took him to King Jehoiakim. Then the king had Uriah struck down with a sword. He had Uriah’s body thrown into one of the graves of the ordinary people. 24 In spite of that, Ahikam stood up for Jeremiah. Ahikam was the son of Shaphan. Because of Ahikam, Jeremiah wasn’t handed over to the people to be put to death.

Profezia sulla distruzione di Gerusalemme; Geremia minacciato di morte

1 Nel principio del regno di Ioiachim, figlio di Giosia, re di Giuda, fu pronunciata questa parola da parte del Signore: 2 «Così parla il Signore: “Va’ nel cortile della casa del Signore e di’ a tutte le città di Giuda, che vengono a prostrarsi nella casa del Signore, tutte le parole che io ti comando di dir loro; non omettere nessuna parola. 3 Forse daranno ascolto e si convertiranno ciascuno dalla sua via malvagia; e io mi pentirò del male che penso di far loro per la malvagità delle loro azioni. 4 Tu dirai loro: Così parla il Signore: ‘Se non date ascolto, se non camminate secondo la mia legge, che vi ho posta davanti, 5 se non date ascolto alle parole dei miei servitori, i profeti, i quali vi mando, che vi ho mandato fin dal mattino e non li avete ascoltati, 6 io tratterò questa casa come Silo e farò in modo che questa città serva di maledizione presso tutte le nazioni della terra’”». 7 I sacerdoti, i profeti e tutto il popolo udirono Geremia che pronunciava queste parole nella casa del Signore. 8 Appena Geremia ebbe finito di pronunciare tutto quello che il Signore gli aveva comandato di dire a tutto il popolo, i sacerdoti, i profeti e tutto il popolo lo presero e dissero: «Tu devi morire! 9 Perché hai profetizzato nel nome del Signore, dicendo: “Questa casa sarà come Silo, e questa città sarà devastata e priva di abitanti”?» Tutto il popolo si radunò contro Geremia nella casa del Signore. 10 Quando i capi di Giuda udirono queste cose, salirono dal palazzo del re al tempio del Signore e si sedettero all’ingresso della porta nuova del tempio del Signore. 11 I sacerdoti e i profeti parlarono ai capi e a tutto il popolo, dicendo: «Quest’uomo merita la morte, perché ha profetizzato contro questa città nel modo che avete udito con le vostre orecchie». 12 Allora Geremia parlò a tutti i capi e a tutto il popolo, dicendo: «Il Signore mi ha mandato a profetizzare contro questo tempio e contro questa città tutte le cose che avete udite. 13 Ora, cambiate le vostre vie e le vostre azioni, date ascolto alla voce del Signore, del vostro Dio, e il Signore si pentirà del male che ha pronunciato contro di voi. 14 Quanto a me, eccomi nelle vostre mani; fate di me quello che vi parrà buono e giusto. 15 Soltanto sappiate per certo che, se mi uccidete, mettete del sangue innocente addosso a voi, a questa città e ai suoi abitanti, perché il Signore mi ha veramente mandato da voi per farvi udire tutte queste parole». 16 Allora i capi e tutto il popolo dissero ai sacerdoti e ai profeti: «Quest’uomo non merita la morte, perché ci ha parlato nel nome del Signore, del nostro Dio». 17 Alcuni degli anziani del paese si alzarono e parlarono così a tutta l’assemblea del popolo: 18 «Michea, il Morasita, profetizzò ai giorni di Ezechia, re di Giuda, e parlò a tutto il popolo di Giuda in questi termini: “Così dice il Signore degli eserciti: ‘Sion sarà arata come un campo, Gerusalemme diventerà un mucchio di macerie, e la montagna del tempio, un’altura boscosa’”. 19 Ezechia, re di Giuda, e tutto Giuda lo misero a morte? Ezechia non temette forse il Signore, e non supplicò il Signore al punto che il Signore si pentì del male che aveva pronunciato contro di loro? Ma noi stiamo per compiere un male gravissimo a nostro danno». 20 Vi fu anche un altro uomo che profetizzò nel nome del Signore: Uria, figlio di Semaia di Chiriat-Iearim, il quale profetizzò contro questa città e contro questo paese, in tutto e per tutto come Geremia. 21 Il re Ioiachim, tutti i suoi uomini prodi e tutti i suoi capi udirono le sue parole; il re cercò di farlo morire, ma Uria lo seppe, ebbe paura, fuggì e andò in Egitto. 22 Il re Ioiachim mandò degli uomini in Egitto, cioè Elnatan, figlio di Acbor, e altra gente con lui. 23 Questi trassero Uria fuori d’Egitto e lo condussero al re Ioiachim, il quale lo colpì con la spada e gettò il suo cadavere fra le sepolture dei figli del popolo. 24 Ma la mano di Aicam, figlio di Safan, fu con Geremia e impedì che fosse dato nelle mani del popolo per essere messo a morte.
