The godly Branch

1 ‘How terrible it will be for the shepherds who lead my people astray!’ announces the LORD. ‘They are destroying and scattering the sheep that belong to my flock.’ 2 So the LORD, the God of Israel, speaks to the shepherds who take care of my people. He tells them, ‘You have scattered my sheep. You have driven them away. You have not taken good care of them. So I will punish you for the evil things you have done,’ announces the LORD. 3 ‘I myself will gather together those who are left alive in my flock. I will gather them out of all the countries where I have driven them. And I will bring them back to their own land. There my sheep will have many lambs. There will be many more of them. 4 I will place shepherds over them who will take good care of them. My sheep will not be afraid or terrified anymore. And none of them will be missing,’ announces the LORD. 5 ‘A new day is coming,’ announces the LORD. ‘At that time I will raise up for David’s royal line a godly Branch. He will be a King who will rule wisely. He will do what is fair and right in the land. 6 In his days Judah will be saved. Israel will live in safety. And the Branch will be called The LORD Who Makes Us Right With Himself. 7 Other days are also coming,’ announces the LORD. ‘At that time people will no longer say, “The LORD brought the Israelites up out of Egypt. And that’s just as sure as he is alive.” 8 Instead, they will say, “The LORD brought the Israelites up out of the land of the north. He gathered them out of all the countries where he had forced them to go. And that’s just as sure as he is alive.” Then they will live in their own land.’

Prophets who tell lies

9 Here is my message about the prophets. My heart is broken inside me. All my bones tremble with fear. I am like a man who is drunk. I am like a strong man who has had too much wine. That’s what the LORD’s holy words have done to me. 10 The land is full of people who aren’t faithful to the LORD. Now the land is under his curse. And that’s why it is thirsty for water. That’s why the desert grasslands are dry. The prophets are leading sinful lives. They don’t use their power in the right way. 11 ‘Prophets and priests alike are ungodly,’ announces the LORD. ‘Even in my temple I find them sinning. 12 So their path will become slippery. They will be thrown out into darkness. There they will fall. I will bring trouble on them when the time to punish them comes,’ announces the LORD. 13 ‘Among the prophets of Samaria I saw something I can’t stand. They were prophesying in the name of Baal. They were leading my people Israel astray. 14 I have also seen something horrible among Jerusalem’s prophets. They are not faithful to me. They are not living by the truth. They strengthen the hands of those who do evil. So not one of them turns from their sinful ways. All of them are like the people of Sodom to me. They are just like the people of Gomorrah.’ 15 So the LORD who rules over all speaks about the prophets. He says, ‘I will make them eat bitter food. I will make them drink poisoned water. The prophets of Jerusalem have spread their ungodly ways all through the land.’ 16 The LORD who rules over all says to the people of Judah, ‘Do not listen to what the prophets are saying to you. They fill you with false hopes. They talk about visions that come from their own minds. What they say does not come from my mouth. 17 They keep speaking to those who hate me. They say, “The LORD says you will have peace.” They speak to all those who do what their stubborn hearts want them to do. They tell them, “No harm will come to you.” 18 But which of them has ever stood in my courts? Have they been there to see a vision or hear my message? Who has listened and heard my message there? 19 A storm will burst out because of my great anger. A violent storm will sweep down on the heads of sinful people. 20 My anger will not turn back. I will accomplish everything I plan to do. In days to come you will understand it clearly. 21 I did not send these prophets. But they have run to tell you their message anyway. I did not speak to them. But they have still prophesied. 22 Suppose they had stood in my courts. Then they would have announced my message to my people. They would have turned my people from their evil ways. They would have turned them away from their sins. 23 ‘Am I only a God who is nearby?’ announces the LORD. ‘Am I not a God who is also far away? 24 Who can hide in secret places so that I can’t see them?’ announces the LORD. ‘Don’t I fill heaven and earth?’ announces the LORD. 25 ‘I have heard what the prophets are saying. They prophesy lies in my name. They say, “I had a dream! The LORD has given me a dream!” 26 How long will that continue in the hearts of these prophets who tell lies? They try to get others to believe their own mistaken ideas. 27 They tell one another their dreams. They think that will make my people forget my name. In the same way, their people of long ago forgot my name when they worshipped Baal. 28 Let the prophet who has a dream describe the dream. But let the one who has my message speak it faithfully. Your prophets have given you straw to eat instead of corn,’ announces the LORD. 29 ‘My message is like fire,’ announces the LORD. ‘It is like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces. 30 ‘So I am against these prophets,’ announces the LORD. ‘I am against those who steal messages from one another. They claim that the messages come from me. 31 Yes,’ announces the LORD. ‘I am against the prophets who speak their own words. But they still say, “Here is what the LORD says.” 32 I am against prophets who talk about dreams that did not come from me,’ announces the LORD. ‘They tell foolish lies. Their lies lead my people astray. But I did not send these prophets. I did not appoint them. They do not help my people in the least,’ announces the LORD.

Prophets who give messages that are not from the Lord

33 ‘Jeremiah, these people might ask you a question. Or a prophet or priest might do this. They might ask, “What message have you received from the LORD?” Then tell them, “You ask, ‘What message?’ Here it is. ‘I will desert you,’ announces the LORD.” 34 A prophet or priest might make a claim. Or someone else might do this. He might claim, “This is a message from the LORD.” Then I will punish them and their family. 35 Here is what each of you people keeps on saying to your friends and other Israelites. You ask, “What is the LORD’s answer?” Or you ask, “What has the LORD spoken?” 36 But you must not talk about “a message from the LORD” again. That’s because each person’s own words become their message. And so you twist the LORD’s words. He is the living God. He is the LORD who rules over all. And he is our God. 37 Here is what you keep saying to a prophet. You ask, “What is the LORD’s answer to you?” Or you ask, “What has the LORD spoken?” 38 You claim, “This is a message from the LORD.” But here is what the LORD says. “You used the words, ‘This is a message from the LORD.’ But I told you that you must not claim, ‘This is a message from the LORD.’ ” 39 So you can be sure I will forget you. I will throw you out of my sight. I will also destroy the city I gave you and your people of long ago. 40 I will bring on you shame that will last for ever. It will never be forgotten.’

I pastori infedeli e i falsi profeti

1 «Guai ai pastori che distruggono e disperdono il gregge del mio pascolo!», dice il Signore. 2 Perciò così parla il Signore, Dio d’Israele, riguardo ai pastori che pascolano il mio popolo: «Voi avete disperso le mie pecore, le avete scacciate e non ne avete avuto cura; ecco, io vi punirò per la malvagità delle vostre azioni», dice il Signore. 3 «Raccoglierò il rimanente delle mie pecore da tutti i paesi dove le ho scacciate, le ricondurrò ai loro pascoli, saranno feconde e si moltiplicheranno. 4 Costituirò su di loro dei pastori che le porteranno al pascolo, ed esse non avranno più paura né spavento, e non ne mancherà nessuna», dice il Signore. 5 «Ecco, i giorni vengono», dice il Signore, «in cui io farò sorgere a Davide un germoglio giusto, il quale regnerà da re e prospererà, eserciterà il diritto e la giustizia nel paese. 6 Nei suoi giorni Giuda sarà salvato e Israele starà sicuro nella sua dimora; questo sarà il nome con il quale sarà chiamato: Signore nostra giustizia. 7 Perciò, ecco, i giorni vengono», dice il Signore, «in cui non si dirà più: “Per la vita del Signore che condusse i figli d’Israele fuori dal paese d’Egitto”, 8 ma: “Per la vita del Signore che ha portato fuori e ha ricondotto la discendenza della casa d’Israele dal paese del settentrione, e da tutti i paesi nei quali io li avevo cacciati”; ed essi abiteranno nel loro paese». 9 Contro i profeti. Il cuore mi si spezza nel petto, tutte le mie ossa tremano; io sono come un ubriaco, come un uomo sopraffatto dal vino, a causa del Signore e a causa delle sue parole sante. 10 Il paese infatti è pieno di adùlteri; il paese infatti è tormentato a causa della maledizione che lo colpisce; i pascoli del deserto sono inariditi. La corsa di costoro è diretta al male, la loro forza non tende al bene. 11 «Profeti e sacerdoti sono empi, nella mia casa stessa ho trovato la loro malvagità», dice il Signore. 12 «Perciò la loro via sarà per loro come luoghi sdrucciolevoli in mezzo alle tenebre; essi vi saranno spinti e cadranno, poiché io farò venire su di loro la calamità, l’anno in cui li visiterò», dice il Signore. 13 «Avevo ben visto cose insensate tra i profeti di Samaria; profetizzavano nel nome di Baal e traviavano il mio popolo Israele. 14 Ma in mezzo ai profeti di Gerusalemme ho visto cose nefande: commettono adultèri, agiscono con ipocrisia, rafforzano la mano ai malfattori, al punto che nessuno si converte dalla sua malvagità; tutti quanti sono per me come Sodoma, e gli abitanti di Gerusalemme come quelli di Gomorra». 15 Perciò così parla il Signore degli eserciti riguardo ai profeti: «Ecco, io farò loro mangiare assenzio e farò loro bere acqua avvelenata; poiché dai profeti di Gerusalemme l’empietà si è sparsa per tutto il paese». 16 Così parla il Signore degli eserciti: «Non ascoltate le parole dei profeti che vi profetizzano; essi vi nutrono di cose vane, vi espongono le visioni del proprio cuore, e non ciò che proviene dalla bocca del Signore. 17 Dicono a quelli che mi disprezzano: “Il Signore ha detto: ‘Avrete pace’; e a tutti quelli che camminano seguendo la caparbietà del proprio cuore: ‘Nessun male vi colpirà’”. 18 Infatti chi ha assistito al consiglio del Signore, chi ha visto, chi ha udito la sua parola? Chi ha prestato orecchio alla sua parola e l’ha udita? 19 Ecco, la tempesta del Signore! Il furore scoppia, la tempesta imperversa, scroscia sul capo degli empi. 20 L’ira del Signore non si placherà, finché non abbia eseguito, compiuto i disegni del suo cuore; negli ultimi giorni lo capirete appieno. 21 Io non ho mandato quei profeti, ed essi corrono; io non ho parlato a loro, ed essi profetizzano. 22 Se avessero assistito al mio consiglio, avrebbero fatto udire le mie parole al mio popolo; li avrebbero distolti dalla loro cattiva via e dalla malvagità delle loro azioni. 23 Sono io soltanto un Dio da vicino», dice il Signore, «e non un Dio da lontano? 24 Potrebbe uno nascondersi in luogo occulto in modo che io non lo veda?», dice il Signore. «Io non riempio forse il cielo e la terra?», dice il Signore. 25 «Io ho udito ciò che dicono i profeti che profetizzano menzogne nel mio nome, dicendo: “Ho avuto un sogno! ho avuto un sogno!” 26 Fino a quando durerà questo? Hanno essi in mente, questi profeti che profetizzano menzogne, questi profeti dell’inganno del loro cuore, 27 pensano forse di far dimenticare il mio nome al mio popolo con i loro sogni che si raccontano l’un l’altro, come i loro padri dimenticarono il mio nome per Baal? 28 Il profeta che ha avuto un sogno racconti il sogno; colui che ha udito la mia parola riferisca la mia parola fedelmente. Che ha da fare la paglia con il frumento?», dice il Signore. 29 «La mia parola non è forse come un fuoco», dice il Signore, «e come un martello che spezza il sasso? 30 Perciò ecco», dice il Signore, «io vengo contro i profeti che rubano gli uni agli altri le mie parole. 31 Ecco», dice il Signore, «io vengo contro i profeti che fanno parlare la loro propria lingua, eppure dicono: “Egli dice”. 32 Ecco», dice il Signore, «io vengo contro quelli che profetizzano sogni falsi, che li raccontano e traviano il mio popolo con le loro menzogne e con la loro temerarietà, sebbene io non li abbia mandati e non abbia dato alcun ordine, ed essi non possano recare alcun giovamento a questo popolo», dice il Signore. 33 «Se questo popolo o un profeta o un sacerdote ti domandano: “Qual è l’oracolo del Signore?”, tu risponderai loro: “Ecco l’oracolo: io vi rigetterò”, dice il Signore. 34 Quanto al profeta, al sacerdote o al popolo che dirà: “Oracolo del Signore”, io lo punirò, lui e la sua casa. 35 Direte così, ognuno al suo vicino, ognuno al suo fratello: “Che ha risposto il Signore? Che ha detto il Signore?” 36 Ma l’oracolo del Signore non lo nominerete più; infatti la parola di ciascuno sarà per lui il suo oracolo, poiché avete falsato le parole del Dio vivente, del Signore degli eserciti, nostro Dio. 37 Tu dirai così al profeta: “Che ti ha risposto il Signore? Che ha detto il Signore?” 38 Se dite ancora: “Oracolo del Signore”, allora il Signore parla così: “Siccome avete detto questa parola: ‘Oracolo del Signore’, sebbene io vi avessi mandato a dire: Non dite più: ‘Oracolo del Signore’, 39 ecco, io vi dimenticherò del tutto e vi rigetterò lontano dalla mia faccia, voi e la città che avevo data a voi e ai vostri padri, 40 e vi coprirò di un’infamia e di una vergogna eterne, che non saranno mai dimenticate”».
