New International Reader’s Version

The Lord’s chosen servant

1 ‘Here is my servant. I take good care of him. I have chosen him. I am very pleased with him. I will put my Spirit on him. He will bring justice to the nations. 2 He will not shout or cry out. He will not raise his voice in the streets. 3 He will not break a bent twig. He will not put out a dimly burning flame. He will be faithful and make everything right. 4 He will not grow weak or lose hope. He will not give up until he brings justice to the earth. The islands will put their hope in his teaching.’ 5 God created the heavens and stretches them out. The LORD spreads out the earth with everything that grows on it. He gives breath to its people. He gives life to those who walk on it. He says to his servant, 6 ‘I, the LORD, have chosen you to do what is right. I will take hold of your hand. I will keep you safe. You will put into effect my covenant with the people of Israel. And you will be a light for the Gentiles. 7 You will open eyes that can’t see. You will set prisoners free. Those who sit in darkness will come out of their cells. 8 ‘I am the LORD. That is my name! I will not let any other god share my glory. I will not let statues of gods share my praise. 9 What I said would happen has taken place. Now I announce new things to you. Before they even begin to happen, I announce them to you.’

A song of praise to the Lord

10 Sing a new song to the LORD. Sing praise to him from one end of the earth to the other. Sing, you who sail out on the ocean. Sing, all you creatures in it. Sing, you islands. Sing, all you who live there. 11 Let the desert and its towns raise their voices. Let those who live in the settlements of Kedar be glad. Let the people of Sela sing for joy. Let them shout from the tops of the mountains. 12 Let them give glory to the LORD. Let them praise him in the islands. 13 The LORD will march out like a mighty warrior. He will stir up his anger like a soldier getting ready to fight. He will shout the battle cry. And he will win the battle over his enemies. 14 The LORD says, ‘For a long time I have kept silent. I have been calm and quiet. But now, like a woman having a baby, I cry out. I gasp and pant. 15 I will completely destroy the mountains and hills. I will dry up everything that grows there. I will turn rivers into dry land. I will dry up the pools. 16 Israel is blind. So I will lead them along paths they had not known before. I will guide them on roads they are not familiar with. I will turn the darkness into light as they travel. I will make the rough places smooth. Those are the things I will do. I will not desert my people. 17 Some people trust in statues of gods. They say to them, “You are our gods.” But they will be dishonoured. They will be put to shame.

Israel can’t see or hear

18 ‘Israel, listen to me! You can hear, but you do not understand. Look to me! You can see, but you do not know what you are seeing. 19 The people of Israel serve me. But who is more blind than they are? Who is more deaf than the messengers I send? Who is more blind than the one who has promised to be faithful to me? Who is more blind than the servant of the LORD? 20 Israel, you have seen many things. But you do not pay any attention to me. Your ears are open. But you do not listen to anything I say.’ 21 The LORD wanted his people to see how great and glorious his law is. He wanted to show them that he always does what is right. 22 Enemies have carried off everything they own. All my people are trapped in pits or hidden away in prisons. They themselves have become like stolen goods. No one can save them. They have been carried off. And there is no one who will say, ‘Send them back.’ 23 Family of Jacob, who among you will listen to what I’m saying? People of Israel, which one of you will pay close attention in days to come? 24 Who allowed you to be carried off like stolen goods? Who handed you over to robbers? The LORD did it! We have sinned against him. Israel, you wouldn’t follow his ways. You didn’t obey his law. 25 So he poured out his great anger on you. He had many of you killed in battle. You were surrounded by flames. But you didn’t realise what was happening. Many of you were destroyed. But you didn’t learn anything from it.

Il servo del Signore

1 «Ecco il mio servo, io lo sosterrò; il mio eletto di cui mi compiaccio; io ho messo il mio Spirito su di lui, egli manifesterà la giustizia alle nazioni. 2 Egli non griderà, non alzerà la voce, non la farà udire per le strade. 3 Non frantumerà la canna rotta e non spegnerà il lucignolo fumante; manifesterà la giustizia secondo verità. 4 Egli non verrà meno e non si abbatterà finché abbia stabilito la giustizia sulla terra; e le isole aspetteranno fiduciose la sua legge». 5 Così parla Dio, il Signore, che ha creato i cieli e li ha spiegati, che ha disteso la terra con tutto quello che essa produce, che dà il respiro al popolo che c’è sopra e lo spirito a quelli che vi camminano. 6 «Io, il Signore, ti ho chiamato secondo giustizia e ti prenderò per la mano; ti custodirò e farò di te l’alleanza del popolo, la luce delle nazioni, 7 per aprire gli occhi dei ciechi, per far uscire dal carcere i prigionieri e dalle prigioni quelli che abitano nelle tenebre. 8 Io sono il Signore; questo è il mio nome; io non darò la mia gloria a un altro, né la lode che mi spetta agli idoli. 9 Ecco, le cose di prima sono avvenute e io ve ne annuncio delle nuove; prima che germoglino, ve le rendo note». 10 Cantate al Signore un cantico nuovo, cantate le sue lodi all’estremità della terra, o voi che scendete sul mare, e anche gli esseri che esso contiene, le isole e i loro abitanti! 11 Il deserto e le sue città alzino la voce! Alzino la voce i villaggi occupati da Chedar! Esultino gli abitanti di Sela, prorompano in grida di gioia dalla vetta dei monti! 12 Diano gloria al Signore, proclamino la sua lode nelle isole! 13 Il Signore avanzerà come un eroe, ecciterà il suo ardore come un guerriero; manderà un grido, un grido tremendo, trionferà sui suoi nemici. 14 «Per lungo tempo ho taciuto, me ne sono stato tranquillo, mi sono trattenuto; ora griderò come una che sta per partorire, respirerò affannosamente e sbufferò a un tempo. 15 Io devasterò montagne e colline, ne farò seccare tutte le erbe; ridurrò i fiumi in isole, asciugherò gli stagni. 16 Farò camminare i ciechi per una via che ignorano, li guiderò per sentieri che non conoscono; cambierò davanti a loro le tenebre in luce, renderò pianeggianti i luoghi impervi. Sono queste le cose che io farò e non li abbandonerò. 17 Ma volgeranno le spalle, coperti d’infamia, quelli che confidano negli idoli scolpiti e dicono alle immagini fuse: “Voi siete i nostri dèi!” 18 Ascoltate, sordi, e voi, ciechi, guardate e vedete! 19 Chi è cieco, se non il mio servo, e sordo come il messaggero inviato da me? Chi è cieco come colui che è mio amico, cieco come il servo del Signore? 20 Tu hai visto molte cose, ma non vi hai posto mente; gli orecchi erano aperti, ma non hai udito nulla». 21 Il Signore si è compiaciuto, per amore della sua giustizia, di rendere la sua legge grande e magnifica; 22 ma questo è un popolo saccheggiato e spogliato; sono tutti legati in caverne, rinchiusi nelle prigioni. Sono abbandonati al saccheggio, e non c’è chi li liberi; spogliati, e non c’è chi dica: «Restituisci!» 23 Chi di voi presterà orecchio a questo? Chi starà attento e ascolterà in avvenire? 24 Chi ha abbandonato Giacobbe al saccheggio e Israele in balìa dei predoni? Non è stato forse il Signore? Colui contro il quale abbiamo peccato, nelle cui vie non si è voluto camminare e alla cui legge non si è ubbidito? 25 Perciò egli ha riversato su Israele la sua ira furente e la violenza della guerra; la guerra l’ha avvolto nelle sue fiamme, ed egli non ha capito; l’ha consumato, ed egli non se l’è presa a cuore.
