Peter explains his actions

1 The apostles and the believers all through Judea heard that Gentiles had also received God’s word. 2 Peter went up to Jerusalem. There the Jewish believers found fault with him. 3 They said, ‘You went into the house of Gentiles. You ate with them.’ 4 Starting from the beginning, Peter told them the whole story. 5 ‘I was in the city of Joppa praying,’ he said. ‘There I had a vision. I saw something that looked like a large sheet. It was being let down from heaven by its four corners. It came down to where I was. 6 I looked into it and saw four-footed animals of the earth. There were also wild animals, reptiles and birds. 7 Then I heard a voice speaking to me. “Get up, Peter,” the voice said. “Kill and eat.” 8 ‘I replied, “No, Lord! I will not! Nothing that is not pure and ‘clean’ has ever entered my mouth.” 9 ‘A second time the voice spoke from heaven. The voice said, “Do not say anything is not pure that God has made ‘clean’. ” 10 This happened three times. Then the sheet was pulled up into heaven. 11 ‘Just then three men stopped at the house where I was staying. They had been sent to me from Caesarea. 12 The Holy Spirit told me not to let anything keep me from going with them. These six brothers here went with me. We entered the man’s house. 13 He told us how he had seen an angel appear in his house. The angel said, “Send to Joppa for Simon Peter. 14 He has a message to bring to you. You and your whole family will be saved through it.” 15 ‘As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on them. He came just as he had come on us at the beginning. 16 Then I remembered the Lord’s words. “John baptised with water,” he had said. “But you will be baptised with the Holy Spirit.” 17 God gave them the same gift he gave those of us who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ. So who was I to think that I could stand in God’s way?’ 18 When they heard this, they didn’t object anymore. They praised God. They said, ‘So then, God has allowed even Gentiles to turn away from their sins. He did this so that they could live.’

The believers in Antioch

19 Some believers had been scattered by the suffering that unbelievers had caused them. They were scattered after Stephen was killed. Those believers travelled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus and Antioch. But they spread the word only among Jews. 20 Some believers from Cyprus and Cyrene went to Antioch. There they began to speak to Greeks also. They told them the good news about the Lord Jesus. 21 The Lord’s power was with them. Large numbers of people believed and turned to the Lord. 22 The church in Jerusalem heard about this. So they sent Barnabas to Antioch. 23 When he arrived and saw what the grace of God had done, he was glad. He told them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts. 24 Barnabas was a good man. He was full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. Large numbers of people came to know the Lord. 25 Then Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul. 26 He found him there. Then he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church. They taught large numbers of people. At Antioch the believers were called Christians for the first time. 27 In those days some prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. 28 One of them was named Agabus. He stood up and spoke through the Spirit. He said there would not be nearly enough food anywhere in the Roman world. This happened while Claudius was the emperor. 29 The believers decided to provide help for the brothers and sisters living in Judea. All of them helped as much as they could. 30 They sent their gift to the elders through Barnabas and Saul.

Pietro si giustifica per aver fatto battezzare Cornelio

1 Gli apostoli e i fratelli che si trovavano nella Giudea vennero a sapere che anche gli stranieri avevano ricevuto la Parola di Dio. 2 E quando Pietro salì a Gerusalemme, i credenti circoncisi lo contestavano, 3 dicendo: «Tu sei entrato in casa di uomini non circoncisi e hai mangiato con loro!» 4 Allora Pietro raccontò loro le cose per ordine fin dal principio, dicendo: 5 «Io ero nella città di Ioppe in preghiera e, rapito in estasi, ebbi una visione: un oggetto che scendeva, simile a una grande tovaglia calata dal cielo per i quattro angoli, e giunse fino a me; 6 io, fissandolo con attenzione, lo esaminai e vidi quadrupedi della terra, fiere, rettili e uccelli del cielo. 7 Udii anche una voce che mi diceva: “Pietro, àlzati, ammazza e mangia”. 8 Ma io dissi: “Assolutamente no, Signore, perché nulla di impuro o contaminato è mai entrato nella mia bocca”. 9 Ma la voce ribatté per la seconda volta dal cielo: “Le cose che Dio ha purificate, non farle tu impure”. 10 E ciò accadde per tre volte, poi ogni cosa fu di nuovo ritirata in cielo. 11 In quell’istante tre uomini, mandatimi da Cesarea, si presentarono alla casa dove eravamo. 12 Lo Spirito mi disse di andare con loro, senza farmene scrupolo. Anche questi sei fratelli vennero con me, ed entrammo in casa di quell’uomo. 13 Egli ci raccontò come aveva visto l’angelo presentarsi in casa sua e dirgli: “Manda qualcuno a Ioppe e fa’ venire Simone, detto anche Pietro. 14 Egli ti parlerà di cose per le quali sarai salvato tu e tutta la tua famiglia”. 15 Avevo appena cominciato a parlare quando lo Spirito Santo scese su di loro, esattamente come su di noi al principio. 16 Mi ricordai allora di quella parola del Signore che diceva: “Giovanni ha battezzato con acqua, ma voi sarete battezzati con lo Spirito Santo”. 17 Se dunque Dio ha dato a loro lo stesso dono che ha dato anche a noi che abbiamo creduto nel Signore Gesù Cristo, chi ero io da potermi opporre a Dio?» 18 Allora, udite queste cose, si calmarono e glorificarono Dio, dicendo: «Dio dunque ha concesso il ravvedimento anche agli stranieri affinché abbiano la vita».

La chiesa di Antiochia; i credenti sono chiamati cristiani

19 Quelli che erano stati dispersi per la persecuzione avvenuta a causa di Stefano, andarono sino in Fenicia, a Cipro e ad Antiochia, annunciando la Parola solo ai Giudei, e a nessun altro. 20 Ma alcuni di loro, che erano Ciprioti e Cirenei, giunti ad Antiochia, si misero a parlare anche ai Greci, portando il lieto messaggio del Signore Gesù. 21 La mano del Signore era con loro; e grande fu il numero di coloro che credettero e si convertirono al Signore. 22 La notizia giunse alle orecchie della chiesa che era in Gerusalemme, la quale mandò Barnaba fino ad Antiochia. 23 Quando egli giunse e vide la grazia di Dio, si rallegrò e li esortò tutti ad attenersi al Signore con cuore risoluto, 24 perché egli era un uomo buono, pieno di Spirito Santo e di fede. E una folla molto numerosa fu aggiunta al Signore. 25 Poi Barnaba partì verso Tarso, a cercare Saulo; e, dopo averlo trovato, lo condusse ad Antiochia. 26 Essi parteciparono per un anno intero alle riunioni della chiesa e istruirono un gran numero di persone; ad Antiochia, per la prima volta, i discepoli furono chiamati cristiani.

La chiesa di Antiochia manda dei doni ai cristiani di Gerusalemme

27 In quei giorni, alcuni profeti scesero da Gerusalemme ad Antiochia. 28 E uno di loro, di nome Agabo, alzatosi, predisse mediante lo Spirito che ci sarebbe stata una grande carestia su tutta la terra; la si ebbe infatti durante l’impero di Claudio. 29 I discepoli decisero allora di inviare una sovvenzione, ciascuno secondo le proprie possibilità, ai fratelli che abitavano in Giudea. 30 E così fecero, inviandola agli anziani, per mezzo di Barnaba e di Saulo.
