1David left Gath and escaped to the cave of Adullam. His brothers and the other members of his family heard about it. So they went down to join him there.2Everyone who was in trouble or owed money or was unhappy gathered around him. He became their commander. About 400 men were with him.3From there David went to Mizpah in Moab. He spoke to the king of Moab. He said, ‘Please let my father and mother come and stay with you. Let them stay until I learn what God will do for me.’4So David left his parents with the king of Moab. They stayed with him as long as David was in his usual place of safety.5But the prophet Gad spoke to David. He said, ‘Don’t stay in your usual place of safety. Go into the land of Judah.’ So David left and went to the forest of Hereth.
Saul kills the priests at Nob
6Saul heard that the place where David and his men were hiding had been discovered. Saul was sitting under a tamarisk tree on the hill at Gibeah. He was holding his spear. All his officials were standing at his side.7Saul said to them, ‘Men of Benjamin, listen to me! Do you think Jesse’s son will give all of you fields and vineyards? Do you think he’ll make some of you commanders of thousands of men? Do you think he’ll make the rest of you commanders of hundreds?8Is that why all of you have joined together against me? No one tells me when my son makes a covenant with Jesse’s son. None of you is concerned about me. No one tells me that my son has stirred up Jesse’s son to hide and wait to attack me. But that’s exactly what’s happening now.’9Doeg was standing with Saul’s officials. He was from Edom. He said, ‘I saw Jesse’s son David come to Ahimelek at Nob. Ahimelek is the son of Ahitub.10Ahimelek asked the LORD a question for David. He also gave him food and the sword of Goliath, the Philistine.’11Then the king sent for the priest Ahimelek, the son of Ahitub. The king also sent for all the men in his family. They were the priests at Nob. All of them came to the king.12Saul said, ‘Son of Ahitub, listen to me.’ ‘Yes, master,’ he answered.13Saul said to him, ‘Why have you and Jesse’s son joined together against me? Why did you give him bread and a sword? Why did you ask God a question for him? Now he has turned against me. He is hiding and waiting to attack me at this very moment.’14Ahimelek answered the king, ‘David is faithful to you. In fact, he’s more faithful to you than anyone else who serves you. He’s your own son-in-law. He’s the captain of your own personal guards. He’s highly respected by everyone in your palace.15Was that day the first time I asked God a question for him? Of course not! Please don’t bring charges against me. Please don’t bring charges against anyone in my family. I don’t know anything at all about this whole matter.’16But the king said, ‘Ahimelek, you will certainly be put to death. You and your whole family will be put to death.’17Then the king gave an order to the guards at his side. He said, ‘Go and kill the priests of the LORD. They are on David’s side too. They knew he was running away from me. And they didn’t even tell me.’ But the king’s officials wouldn’t raise a hand to strike down the priests of the LORD.18Then the king ordered Doeg, ‘You go and strike down the priests.’ So Doeg, the Edomite, went and struck them down. That day he killed 85 priests who wore linen aprons.19He also killed the people of Nob with his sword. Nob was a town where priests lived. Doeg killed its men and women. He killed its children and babies. He also destroyed its cattle, donkeys and sheep.20But Abiathar, a son of Ahimelek, escaped. Ahimelek was the son of Ahitub. Abiathar ran away and joined David.21He told David that Saul had killed the priests of the LORD.22Then David said to Abiathar, ‘One day I was at Nob. I saw Doeg, the Edomite, there. I knew he would be sure to tell Saul. Your whole family has been killed. And I’m responsible for it.23So stay with me. Don’t be afraid. The man who wants to kill you wants to kill me too. You will be safe with me.’

Davide nella spelonca di Adullam, poi in Moab
1Davide partì di là e si rifugiò nella spelonca di Adullam. Quando i suoi fratelli e tutta la famiglia di suo padre lo seppero, scesero là per unirsi a lui.2Tutti quelli che erano in difficoltà, che avevano debiti o che erano scontenti, si radunarono presso di lui ed egli divenne loro capo. Così ebbe con sé circa quattrocento uomini.3Di là Davide andò a Mispa di Moab e disse al re di Moab: «Permetti che mio padre e mia madre vengano a stare da voi, fino a quando io sappia quello che Dio farà di me».4Egli dunque li condusse davanti al re di Moab ed essi rimasero con lui tutto il tempo che Davide fu nella sua fortezza.5Il profeta Gad disse a Davide: «Non stare più in questa fortezza; parti e va’ nel paese di Giuda». Davide allora partì, e giunse nella foresta di Cheret.
Massacro dei sacerdoti e degli abitanti di Nob per ordine di Saul
6Saul seppe che Davide e gli uomini che erano con lui erano stati visti. Saul si trovava allora a Ghibea, seduto sotto la tamerice che è sull’altura; aveva in mano la lancia, e tutti i suoi servitori gli stavano intorno.7Saul disse ai servitori che gli stavano intorno: «Ascoltate ora, Beniaminiti! Il figlio d’Isai darà forse a voi tutti campi e vigne? Farà egli di tutti voi dei capi di migliaia e dei capi di centinaia?8Perché allora avete tutti congiurato contro di me e non c’è nessuno che mi abbia informato dell’alleanza che mio figlio ha fatta con il figlio d’Isai? Non c’è nessuno di voi che mi compianga e m’informi che mio figlio ha sollevato contro di me il mio servo perché mi tenda insidie come fa oggi?»9E Doeg, l’Idumeo, che si trovava tra i servitori di Saul, rispose e disse: «Io ho visto il figlio d’Isai giungere a Nob da Aimelec, figlio di Aitub,10il quale consultò il Signore per lui, gli diede dei viveri e gli diede la spada di Goliat il Filisteo».11Allora il re mandò a chiamare il sacerdote Aimelec, figlio di Aitub, e tutta la famiglia di suo padre, vale a dire i sacerdoti che erano a Nob. Tutti vennero dal re.12Saul disse: «Ora ascolta, figlio di Aitub!» Ed egli rispose: «Eccomi, mio signore!»13E Saul gli disse: «Perché tu e il figlio d’Isai avete congiurato contro di me? Perché gli hai dato del pane e una spada e hai consultato Dio per lui affinché insorga contro di me e mi tenda insidie come fa oggi?»14Allora Aimelec rispose al re e disse: «Chi mai fra tutti i tuoi servi è fedele come Davide, genero del re, pronto al tuo comando e onorato nella tua casa?15Ho forse cominciato oggi a consultare Dio per lui? Lungi da me il pensiero di tradirti! Non attribuisca il re nulla di simile al suo servo o a tutta la famiglia di mio padre, perché il tuo servo non sa cosa alcuna, piccola o grande, di tutto questo».16Il re disse: «Tu morirai senz’altro, Aimelec, tu con tutta la famiglia di tuo padre!»17Il re disse alle guardie che gli stavano intorno: «Avanzate e uccidete i sacerdoti del Signore, perché anche loro sono d’accordo con Davide; sapevano che egli era fuggito e non mi hanno informato». Ma i servitori del re non vollero mettere le mani addosso ai sacerdoti del Signore.18Il re disse a Doeg: «Fatti avanti tu e uccidi i sacerdoti!» Doeg, l’Idumeo, si fece avanti, si avventò addosso ai sacerdoti e uccise in quel giorno ottantacinque persone che portavano l’efod di lino.19Saul passò a fil di spada anche Nob, la città dei sacerdoti: uomini, donne, bambini, lattanti, buoi, asini e pecore; passò tutti a fil di spada.20Tuttavia uno dei figli di Aimelec, figlio di Aitub, di nome Abiatar, scampò e si rifugiò presso Davide.21Abiatar riferì a Davide che Saul aveva ucciso i sacerdoti del Signore.22Davide disse ad Abiatar: «Io sapevo bene, quel giorno, che Doeg l’Idumeo era là, che egli avrebbe senza dubbio avvertito Saul; io sono la causa della morte di tutte le persone della famiglia di tuo padre.23Resta con me, non temere; chi cerca la mia vita cerca la tua; con me sarai al sicuro».
