Gifts of the Holy Spirit

1 Brothers and sisters, I want you to know about the gifts of the Holy Spirit. 2 You know that at one time you were unbelievers. You were somehow drawn away to worship statues of gods that couldn’t even speak. 3 So I want you to know that no one who is speaking with the help of God’s Spirit says, ‘May Jesus be cursed.’ And without the help of the Holy Spirit no one can say, ‘Jesus is Lord.’ 4 There are different kinds of gifts. But they are all given to believers by the same Spirit. 5 There are different ways to serve. But they all come from the same Lord. 6 There are different ways the Spirit works. But the same God is working in all these ways and in all people. 7 The Holy Spirit is given to each of us in a special way. That is for the good of all. 8 To some people the Spirit gives a message of wisdom. To others the same Spirit gives a message of knowledge. 9 To others the same Spirit gives faith. To others that one Spirit gives gifts of healing. 10 To others he gives the power to do miracles. To others he gives the ability to prophesy. To others he gives the ability to tell the spirits apart. To others he gives the ability to speak in different kinds of languages they had not known before. And to still others he gives the ability to explain what was said in those languages. 11 All the gifts are produced by one and the same Spirit. He gives gifts to each person, just as he decides.

One body but many parts

12 There is one body, but it has many parts. But all its many parts make up one body. It is the same with Christ. 13 We were all baptised by one Holy Spirit. And so we are formed into one body. It didn’t matter whether we were Jews or Gentiles, slaves or free people. We were all given the same Spirit to drink. 14 So the body is not made up of just one part. It has many parts. 15 Suppose the foot says, ‘I am not a hand. So I don’t belong to the body.’ By saying this, it cannot stop being part of the body. 16 And suppose the ear says, ‘I am not an eye. So I don’t belong to the body.’ By saying this, it cannot stop being part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, how could it hear? If the whole body were an ear, how could it smell? 18 God has placed each part in the body just as he wanted it to be. 19 If all the parts were the same, how could there be a body? 20 As it is, there are many parts. But there is only one body. 21 The eye can’t say to the hand, ‘I don’t need you!’ The head can’t say to the feet, ‘I don’t need you!’ 22 In fact, it is just the opposite. The parts of the body that seem to be weaker are the ones we can’t do without. 23 The parts that we think are less important we treat with special honour. The private parts aren’t shown. But they are treated with special care. 24 The parts that can be shown don’t need special care. But God has put together all the parts of the body. And he has given more honour to the parts that didn’t have any. 25 In that way, the parts of the body will not take sides. All of them will take care of one another. 26 If one part suffers, every part suffers with it. If one part is honoured, every part shares in its joy. 27 You are the body of Christ. Each one of you is a part of it. 28 First, God has placed apostles in the church. Second, he has placed prophets in the church. Third, he has placed teachers in the church. Then he has given to the church miracles and gifts of healing. He also has given the gift of helping others and the gift of guiding the church. God also has given the gift of speaking in different kinds of languages. 29 Is everyone an apostle? Is everyone a prophet? Is everyone a teacher? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in languages they had not known before? Do all explain what is said in those languages?

Love is necessary

31 But above all, you should want the more important gifts. But now I will show you the best way of all.

Varietà dei doni spirituali

1 Circa i doni spirituali, fratelli, non voglio che siate nell’ignoranza. 2 Voi sapete che quando eravate pagani eravate trascinati dietro agli idoli muti, secondo come vi si conduceva. 3 Perciò vi faccio sapere che nessuno, parlando per lo Spirito di Dio, dice: «Gesù è anatema!» e nessuno può dire: «Gesù è il Signore!» se non per lo Spirito Santo. 4 Ora vi è diversità di doni, ma vi è un medesimo Spirito. 5 Vi è diversità di ministeri, ma non vi è che un medesimo Signore. 6 Vi è varietà di operazioni, ma non vi è che un medesimo Dio, il quale opera tutte le cose in tutti. 7 Ora a ciascuno è data la manifestazione dello Spirito per il bene comune. 8 Infatti a uno è data, mediante lo Spirito, parola di sapienza; a un altro, parola di conoscenza, secondo il medesimo Spirito; 9 a un altro, fede, mediante il medesimo Spirito; a un altro, doni di guarigione, per mezzo del medesimo Spirito; 10 a un altro, potenza di operare miracoli; a un altro, profezia; a un altro, il discernimento degli spiriti; a un altro, diversità di lingue e a un altro, l’interpretazione delle lingue; 11 ma tutte queste cose le opera quell’unico e medesimo Spirito, distribuendo i doni a ciascuno in particolare come vuole.

La chiesa viene paragonata al corpo umano

12 Poiché, come il corpo è uno e ha molte membra, e tutte le membra del corpo, benché siano molte, formano un solo corpo, così è anche di Cristo. 13 Infatti noi tutti siamo stati battezzati in un unico Spirito per formare un unico corpo, Giudei e Greci, schiavi e liberi; e tutti siamo stati abbeverati di un solo Spirito. 14 Infatti il corpo non si compone di un membro solo, ma di molte membra. 15 Se il piede dicesse: «Siccome io non sono mano, non sono del corpo», non per questo non sarebbe del corpo. 16 Se l’orecchio dicesse: «Siccome io non sono occhio, non sono del corpo», non per questo non sarebbe del corpo. 17 Se tutto il corpo fosse occhio, dove sarebbe l’udito? Se tutto fosse udito, dove sarebbe l’odorato? 18 Ma ora Dio ha collocato ciascun membro nel corpo, come ha voluto. 19 Se tutte le membra fossero un unico membro, dove sarebbe il corpo? 20 Ci sono dunque molte membra, ma c’è un unico corpo; 21 l’occhio non può dire alla mano: «Non ho bisogno di te»; né il capo può dire ai piedi: «Non ho bisogno di voi». 22 Al contrario, le membra del corpo che sembrano essere più deboli sono invece necessarie; 23 e quelle parti del corpo che stimiamo essere le meno onorevoli, le circondiamo di maggior onore; le nostre parti indecorose sono trattate con maggior decoro, 24 mentre le parti nostre decorose non ne hanno bisogno; ma Dio ha formato il corpo in modo da dare maggior onore alla parte che ne mancava, 25 perché non ci fosse divisione nel corpo, ma le membra avessero la medesima cura le une per le altre. 26 Se un membro soffre, tutte le membra soffrono con lui; se un membro è onorato, tutte le membra ne gioiscono con lui. 27 Ora voi siete il corpo di Cristo e membra di esso, ciascuno per parte sua. 28 E Dio ha posto nella chiesa in primo luogo degli apostoli, in secondo luogo dei profeti, in terzo luogo dei dottori, poi miracoli, poi doni di guarigioni, assistenze, doni di governo, diversità di lingue. 29 Sono forse tutti apostoli? Sono forse tutti profeti? Sono forse tutti dottori? Fanno tutti dei miracoli? 30 Tutti hanno forse i doni di guarigioni? Parlano tutti in altre lingue? Interpretano tutti? 31 Voi, però, desiderate ardentemente i doni maggiori! Ora vi mostrerò una via, che è la via per eccellenza.
