The song of the vineyard

1 I will sing a song for the LORD. He is the one I love. It’s a song about his vineyard Israel. The one I love had a vineyard. It was on a hillside that had rich soil. 2 He dug up the soil and removed its stones. He planted the very best vines in it. He built a lookout tower there. He also cut out a winepress for it. Then he kept looking for a crop of good grapes. But the vineyard produced only bad fruit. 3 So the LORD said, ‘People of Jerusalem and Judah, you be the judge between me and my vineyard. 4 What more could I have done for my vineyard? I did everything I could. I kept looking for a crop of good grapes. So why did it produce only bad ones? 5 Now I will tell you what I am going to do to my vineyard. I will take away its fence. And the vineyard will be destroyed. I will break down its wall. And people will walk all over my vineyard. 6 I will turn my vineyard into a dry and empty desert. It will not be pruned or taken care of. Thorns and bushes will grow there. I will command the clouds not to rain on it.’ 7 The vineyard of the LORD who rules over all is the nation of Israel. The people of Judah are the vines he took delight in. He kept looking for them to do what is fair. But all he saw was blood being spilled. He kept looking for them to do what is right. But all he heard were cries of suffering.

The Lord judges his vineyard

8 How terrible it will be for you who get too many houses! How terrible for you who get too many fields! Finally there won’t be any space left in the land. Then you will live all alone. 9 I heard the LORD who rules over all announce a message. He said, ‘You can be sure that the great houses will become empty. The fine homes will be left with no one living in them. 10 A ten-acre vineyard will produce only 24 litres of wine. 150 kilograms of seeds will produce only 15 kilograms of corn.’ 11 How terrible it will be for those who get up early in the morning to start drinking! How terrible for those who stay up late at night until they are drunk with wine! 12 They have harps and lyres at their banquets. They have tambourines, flutes and wine. But they don’t have any concern for the mighty acts of the LORD. They don’t have any respect for what his power has done. 13 So my people will be taken away as prisoners. That’s because they don’t understand what the LORD has done. Their nobles will die of hunger. The rest of the people won’t have any water to drink. 14 So Death opens its jaws to receive them. Its mouth is open wide to swallow them up. Their nobles and the rest of the people will go down into it. They will go there together with all those who have wild parties. 15 So people will be brought low. Everyone will be made humble. Those who boast will be brought down. 16 But the LORD who rules over all will be honoured because he judges fairly. The holy God will prove that he is holy by doing what is right. 17 Then sheep will graze as if they were in their own grasslands. Lambs will eat grass among the destroyed buildings where rich people used to live. 18 How terrible it will be for those who continue to sin and lie about it! How terrible for those who keep on doing what is evil as if they were tied to it! 19 How terrible for those who say, ‘Let God hurry up and do what he says he will. We want to see it happen. Let us see the plan of the Holy One of Israel. We want to know what it is.’ 20 How terrible it will be for those who say that what is evil is good! How terrible for those who say that what is good is evil! How terrible for those who say that darkness is light and light is darkness! How terrible for those who say that what is bitter is sweet and what is sweet is bitter! 21 How terrible it will be for those who think they are wise! How terrible for those who think they are really clever! 22 How terrible it will be for those who are heroes at drinking wine! How terrible for those who are heroes at mixing drinks! 23 How terrible for those who take money to set guilty people free! How terrible for those who don’t treat good people fairly! 24 Flames of fire burn up straw. Dry grass sinks down into those flames. Evil people will be like plants whose roots rot away. They will be like flowers that are blown away like dust. That’s because they have said no to the law of the LORD who rules over all. They have turned against the message of the Holy One of Israel. 25 So the LORD is angry with his people. He raises his hand against them and strikes them down. The mountains shake. The bodies of dead people lie in the streets like rubbish. Even then, the LORD is still angry. His hand is still raised against them. 26 He lifts up a banner to gather the nations that are far away. He whistles for them to come from the farthest places on earth. Here they come. They are moving very quickly. 27 None of them grows tired. None of them falls down. None of them sleeps or even takes a nap. All of them are ready for battle. Every belt is pulled tight. Not a single sandal strap is broken. 28 The enemies’ arrows are sharp. All their bows are ready. The hooves of their horses are as hard as rock. Their chariot wheels turn like a whirlwind. 29 The sound of their army is like the roar of lions. It’s like the roar of young lions. They growl as they capture what they were chasing. They carry it off. No one can take it away from them. 30 At that time the enemy army will roar over Israel. It will sound like the roaring of the ocean. If someone looks at the land of Israel, there is only darkness and trouble. The clouds will make even the sun become dark.

Das Lied vom unfruchtbaren Weinberg

1 Wohlan, ich will von meinem lieben Freunde singen, ein Lied von meinem Freund und seinem Weinberg. Mein Freund hatte einen Weinberg auf einer fetten Höhe. (Isa 27:2) 2 Und er grub ihn um und entsteinte ihn und pflanzte darin edle Reben. Er baute auch einen Turm darin und grub eine Kelter und wartete darauf, dass er gute Trauben brächte; aber er brachte schlechte. (Jer 2:21; Mr 12:1) 3 Nun richtet, ihr Bürger zu Jerusalem und ihr Männer Judas, zwischen mir und meinem Weinberg! 4 Was sollte man noch mehr tun an meinem Weinberg, das ich nicht getan habe an ihm? Warum hat er denn schlechte Trauben gebracht, während ich darauf wartete, dass er gute brächte? 5 Wohlan, ich will euch zeigen, was ich mit meinem Weinberg tun will! Sein Zaun soll weggenommen werden, dass er kahl gefressen werde, und seine Mauer soll eingerissen werden, dass er zertreten werde. 6 Ich will ihn wüst liegen lassen, dass er nicht beschnitten noch gehackt werde, sondern Disteln und Dornen darauf wachsen, und will den Wolken gebieten, dass sie nicht darauf regnen. (Isa 7:23) 7 Des HERRN Zebaoth Weinberg aber ist das Haus Israel und die Männer Judas seine Pflanzung, an der sein Herz hing. Er wartete auf Rechtsspruch, siehe, da war Rechtsbruch, auf Gerechtigkeit, siehe, da war Geschrei über Schlechtigkeit. (Isa 3:14)

Weherufe über die Sünden der Großen

8 Weh denen, die ein Haus zum andern bringen und einen Acker an den andern rücken, bis kein Raum mehr da ist und ihr allein das Land besitzt! (De 5:21; Mic 2:2) 9 Es ist in meinen Ohren das Wort des HERRN Zebaoth: Fürwahr, die vielen Häuser sollen veröden, die großen und feinen unbewohnt sein, (Isa 6:11) 10 denn zehn Morgen Weinberg sollen nur einen Eimer geben und ein Sack Saat nur einen Scheffel. 11 Weh denen, die des Morgens früh auf sind, dem Saufen nachzugehen, und sitzen bis in die Nacht, dass sie der Wein erhitzt. 12 Und sie haben Harfen, Zithern, Pauken, Pfeifen und Wein bei ihren Gelagen, aber sehen nicht auf das Werk des HERRN und schauen nicht auf das Tun seiner Hände! (Isa 22:11; Am 6:5) 13 Darum ist mein Volk weggeführt worden, weil es keine Erkenntnis hatte, und seine Vornehmen mussten Hunger leiden und die lärmende Menge Durst. (Ho 4:6) 14 Darum hat das Totenreich den Schlund weit aufgesperrt und den Rachen aufgetan ohne Maß, dass hinunterfährt, was da prangt und lärmt, alle Übermütigen und Fröhlichen. 15 So wurde gebeugt der Mensch und gedemütigt der Mann, und die Augen der Hoffärtigen wurden erniedrigt, (Isa 2:11; Isa 2:17) 16 aber der HERR Zebaoth war hoch im Gericht und Gott, der Heilige, erwies sich heilig in Gerechtigkeit. 17 Da werden dann Lämmer weiden wie auf ihrer Trift und Ziegen sich nähren in den Trümmerstätten der Wohlgenährten. 18 Weh denen, die das Unrecht herbeiziehen mit Stricken der Lüge und die Sünde mit Wagenseilen 19 und sprechen: Er lasse eilends und bald kommen sein Werk, dass wir’s sehen; es nahe und treffe ein der Ratschluss des Heiligen Israels, dass wir ihn kennenlernen! (Jer 17:15; Am 5:18) 20 Weh denen, die Böses gut und Gutes böse nennen, die aus Finsternis Licht und aus Licht Finsternis machen, die aus sauer süß und aus süß sauer machen! 21 Weh denen, die weise sind in ihren eigenen Augen und halten sich selbst für klug! (Pr 3:7; Ro 12:16) 22 Weh denen, die Helden sind, Wein zu saufen, und wackere Männer, starkes Getränk zu mischen, (Isa 28:7; Isa 56:12) 23 die den Schuldigen gerecht sprechen für Geschenke und das Recht nehmen denen, die im Recht sind! (Ex 23:8; Pr 17:15) 24 Darum, wie des Feuers Flamme Stroh verzehrt und Stoppeln vergehen in der Flamme, so wird ihre Wurzel verfaulen und ihre Blüte auffliegen wie Staub. Denn sie haben verachtet die Weisung des HERRN Zebaoth und gelästert die Rede des Heiligen Israels. (Jer 6:19; Am 2:4)

Gott ruft die Feinde ins Land

25 Darum ist der Zorn des HERRN entbrannt über sein Volk, und er hat seine Hand ausgereckt wider sie und sie geschlagen, dass die Berge bebten und ihre Leichen lagen wie Kehricht auf den Gassen. Bei all dem hat sein Zorn sich nicht abgekehrt, seine Hand ist noch ausgereckt. (Isa 9:11; Isa 9:16; Isa 9:20; Isa 10:4)

26 Er wird ein Feldzeichen aufrichten für das Volk^[1] aus der Ferne und pfeift es herbei vom Ende der Erde. Und siehe, eilends und schnell kommen sie daher. (Isa 7:18) 27 Keiner unter ihnen ist müde oder strauchelt, keiner schlummert noch schläft; keinem geht der Gürtel auf von seinen Hüften, und keinem zerreißt ein Schuhriemen. 28 Ihre Pfeile sind scharf und alle ihre Bogen gespannt; die Hufe ihrer Rosse sind hart wie Kieselsteine, und ihre Wagenräder sind wie ein Sturmwind. 29 Ihr Brüllen ist wie das der Löwen, und sie brüllen wie junge Löwen. Sie wüten und packen den Raub und tragen ihn davon und niemand rettet. 30 Und es wird über ihnen wüten zu der Zeit wie das Wüten des Meeres. Sieht man dann die Erde an, siehe, so ist sie finster vor Angst, und das Licht ist durch Wolken verfinstert. (Isa 8:22)
