New International Reader’s Version

A psalm of Asaph.

1 The Mighty One, God, the LORD, speaks. He calls out to the earth from the sunrise in the east to the sunset in the west. 2 From Zion, perfect and beautiful, God’s glory shines out. 3 Our God comes, and he won’t be silent. A burning fire goes ahead of him. A terrible storm is all around him. 4 He calls out to heaven and earth to be his witnesses. Then he judges his people. 5 He says, ‘Gather this holy people around me. They made a covenant with me by offering a sacrifice.’ 6 The heavens announce that what God decides is right. That’s because he is a God of justice. 7 God says, ‘Listen, my people, and I will speak. I will be a witness against you, Israel. I am God, your God. 8 I don’t bring charges against you because of your sacrifices. I don’t bring charges because of the burnt offerings you always bring me. 9 I don’t need a bull from your barn. I don’t need goats from your pens. 10 Every animal in the forest already belongs to me. And so do the cattle on a thousand hills. 11 I own every bird in the mountains. The insects in the fields belong to me. 12 If I were hungry, I wouldn’t tell you. The world belongs to me. And so does everything in it. 13 Do I eat the meat of bulls? Do I drink the blood of goats? 14 Bring me thank-offerings, because I am your God. Carry out the promises you made to me, because I am the Most High God. 15 Call out to me when trouble comes. I will save you. And you will honour me.’ 16 But here is what God says to a sinful person. ‘What right do you have to speak the words of my laws? How dare you speak the words of my covenant! 17 You hate my teaching. You turn your back on what I say. 18 When you see a thief, you join him. You make friends with those who commit adultery. 19 You use your mouth to speak evil. You use your tongue to spread lies. 20 You are a witness against your brother. You always tell lies about your own mother’s son. 21 When you did these things, I kept silent. So you thought I was just like you. But now I’m going to bring you to court. I will bring charges against you. 22 ‘You who forget God, think about this. If you don’t, I will tear you to pieces. No one will be able to save you. 23 People who sacrifice thank-offerings to me honour me. To those who are without blame I will show my power to save.’

Was Gott von seinem Volk erwartet

1 Ein Lied Asafs. Gott, der HERR, spricht, der Große und Mächtige! Sein Ruf schallt über die ganze Erde, von dort, wo die Sonne aufgeht, bis dorthin, wo sie versinkt. (1Ch 6:24) 2 Auf dem Zion, dem schönsten aller Berge, zeigt sich Gott in strahlendem Glanz. (Ps 76:3) 3 Unser Gott kommt, er schweigt nicht länger. Vor ihm her läuft vernichtendes Feuer, um ihn stürmt und wütet das Wetter. (Ps 97:3) 4 Himmel und Erde ruft er als Zeugen auf, denn er will sein Volk zur Rechenschaft ziehen. (De 4:26; Mic 6:1) 5 »Holt mir die Meinen zusammen«, sagt er, »sie haben einen Bund mit mir geschlossen und sich verpflichtet, mir zu gehorchen; mit einem Opfer haben sie den Bund besiegelt.« (Ex 24:4) 6 Der Himmel kann es bezeugen: Gott ist im Recht, wenn er nun Rechenschaft von ihnen fordert. 7 »Höre, mein Volk, ich habe mit dir zu reden! Israel, ich klage dich an, ich selbst, dein Gott! 8 Du bringst mir viele Opfergaben, daran habe ich nichts auszusetzen; Brandopfer bringst du mir zu jeder Zeit. (Ps 40:7) 9 Aber ich nehme deine Opfer nicht an. Ich brauche ihn nicht, den Stier aus deinem Stall, auch nicht den Bock aus deinem Pferch! 10 Alle Tiere des Waldes gehören mir, das Wild auf Tausenden von Bergen ist mein Eigentum. 11 Auch die Vögel dort gehören mir und alle kleinen Tiere auf dem freien Feld. 12 Selbst wenn ich Hunger hätte, würde ich von dir nichts fordern; denn mir gehört die ganze Erde und alles, was darauf lebt. 13 Meinst du, ich esse das Fleisch von Rindern oder trinke das Blut von Böcken? 14 Nicht Opfer will ich von dir, sondern Dank: Löse deine Versprechen ein, die du mir in Bedrängnis gegeben hast, mir, dem Höchsten, deinem Gott! 15 Bist du in Not, so rufe mich zu Hilfe! Ich werde dir helfen und du wirst mich preisen.« (Ps 91:15) 16 Zu dem Ungehorsamen aber sagt Gott: »Was sprichst du ständig von meinen Geboten und berufst dich auf meinen Bund? 17 Du lässt dir ja nichts von mir sagen, jede Mahnung schlägst du in den Wind! 18 Mit Dieben freundest du dich an, bei Ehebrechern fühlst du dich zu Hause, 19 dein Mund fließt über von Lästerreden, deine Zunge knüpft lauter Lügengewebe. 20 Du ziehst über deine Mitmenschen her, sogar den eigenen Bruder verleumdest du. 21 Und ich sollte schweigen zu all diesem Unrecht? Hältst du mich etwa für deinesgleichen? Ich verlange Rechenschaft von dir, ich halte dir jede Schändlichkeit vor Augen! 22 Ihr alle, die ihr mich vergessen habt, hört, was ich sage, nehmt es zu Herzen! Sonst schlage ich zu und es gibt keine Rettung. 23 Dank ist die Opfergabe, an der ich Freude habe; und wer auf meinen Wegen geht, erfährt meine Hilfe.« (Ps 119:108)
