1 Wine causes you to make fun of others, and beer causes you to start fights. Anyone who is led astray by them is not wise. 2 A king’s anger brings terror like a lion’s roar. Anyone who makes him angry may lose their life. 3 Avoiding a fight brings honour to a person. But every foolish person is quick to argue. 4 Anyone who refuses to work doesn’t plough in the right season. When they look for a crop at harvest time, they don’t find it. 5 The purposes of a person’s heart are like deep water. But one who has understanding brings them out. 6 Many claim to have love that never fails. But who can find a faithful person? 7 Those who do what is right live without blame. Blessed are their children after them. 8 A king sits on his throne to judge. He gets rid of all evil when he sees it. 9 No one can say, ‘I have kept my heart pure. I’m “clean”, and I haven’t sinned.’ 10 The LORD hates two things. He hates weights that weigh things heavier or lighter than they really are. He also hates measures that measure things larger or smaller than they really are. 11 Even small children are known by their actions. So is their conduct really pure and right? 12 The LORD has made two things. He has made ears that hear. He has also made eyes that see. 13 Don’t love sleep, or you will become poor. Stay awake, and you will have more food than you need. 14 ‘It’s no good. It’s no good!’ says a buyer. Then off they go and boast about what they bought. 15 There is gold, and there are plenty of rubies. But lips that speak knowledge are a priceless jewel. 16 Take the coat of one who puts up money for what a stranger owes. Hold it until you get paid back if it is done for an outsider. 17 Food gained by cheating tastes sweet. But you will end up with a mouth full of gravel. 18 Plans are made by asking for guidance. So if you go to war, get good advice. 19 A person who talks about others tells secrets. So avoid anyone who talks too much. 20 If anyone asks for bad things to happen to their father or mother, that person’s lamp will be blown out in total darkness. 21 Property that you claim too soon will not be blessed in the end. 22 Don’t say, ‘I’ll get even with you for the wrong you did to me!’ Wait for the LORD, and he will make things right for you. 23 The LORD hates weights that weigh things heavier or lighter than they really are. Scales that are not honest don’t please him. 24 The LORD directs a person’s steps. So how can anyone understand their own way? 25 A person is trapped if they make a hasty promise to God and only later thinks about what they said. 26 A wise king gets rid of evil people. He runs the threshing wheel over them. 27 The spirit of a person is the lamp of the LORD. It lights up what is deep down inside them. 28 Love and truth keep a king safe. Faithful love makes his throne secure. 29 Young men are proud of their strength. Grey hair brings honour to old men. 30 Blows and wounds scrub evil away. And beatings make you pure deep down inside.

2 Ein König ist so bedrohlich wie ein knurrender Löwe; seinen Zorn zu wecken wäre Selbstmord. (Pr 16:14) 3 Es ehrt einen Mann, sich aus einem Streit herauszuhalten; nur ein Dummkopf stürzt sich hinein. 4 Im Herbst mag der Faulpelz nicht pflügen; später will er ernten und kann nichts finden. (Pr 6:6) 5 Guter Rat liegt tief im Menschenherzen wie Wasser in einem Brunnen; wer Verstand hat, holt ihn herauf. 6 Viele reden von ihrer Treue; aber finde mal einen Menschen, auf den Verlass ist! 7 Wer rechtschaffen ist und untadelig lebt, dessen Kinder können von Glück reden! (Ps 112:1) 8 Wenn der König Gericht hält, findet sein Blick jeden Verbrecher heraus. (Pr 16:10) 9 Welcher Mensch kann von sich behaupten: »Ich habe ein reines Gewissen, ich bin meine Fehler losgeworden«? (Job 4:17; Pr 30:12) 10 Zweierlei Maß, zweierlei Gewicht: Der HERR hasst beides. (Pr 11:1) 11 Schon einen jungen Menschen erkennst du an seinen Taten; du siehst daran, ob er Charakter hat. 12 Das Ohr ist zum Hören und das Auge zum Sehen, dazu hat der HERR beide geschaffen. 13 Liebst du den Schlaf, so bist du bald arm. Mach die Augen früh auf, dann hast du immer satt zu essen! (Pr 6:10) 14 »Viel zu teuer!«, sagt der Käufer; doch wenn er weggeht, reibt er sich die Hände. 15 Gold und edle Steine gibt es haufenweise, aber einsichtsvolle Worte sind eine Seltenheit. 16 Wenn einer so dumm war, für einen Fremden zu bürgen, dann nimm ruhig sein Obergewand als Pfand, wenn er von dir etwas borgen will. (Pr 6:1) 17 Wer von Betrug lebt, findet anfangs Geschmack daran; aber hinterher hat er den Mund voll Sand. 18 Durch Beratung kommen Pläne zum Ziel; wenn du in den Kampf ziehen willst, brauchst du einen guten Plan. (Pr 24:6) 19 Wer jedes Gerücht weiterträgt, plaudert auch Geheimnisse aus. Darum meide Leute, die zu viel reden! 20 Wenn du deinen Vater oder deine Mutter verfluchst, wird es dir ergehen wie einem, dessen Lampe in dunkelster Nacht erlischt. (Ex 21:17; Pr 19:26; Pr 30:17) 21 Wenn du zu schnell nach deinem Erbe greifst, bringt es dir am Ende kein Glück. 22 Nimm dir nicht vor, erlittenes Unrecht selber zu vergelten! Vertrau auf den HERRN, er wird dir Recht verschaffen! (Pr 24:29; Mt 5:38; Ro 12:17; Sir 28:1)

23 Der HERR hasst zweierlei Gewicht, und falsche Waage heißt er nicht gut. (Pr 11:1) 24 Der HERR bestimmt jeden unserer Schritte. Wie kann ein Mensch wissen, welche Richtung sein Leben nimmt? 25 Wenn du Gott etwas versprichst und erst dann überlegst, wie du es erfüllen kannst, begibst du dich in eine ausweglose Falle. (Jud 11:29; Ec 5:3) 26 Ein weiser König findet die Verbrecher heraus und bestraft sie ohne Erbarmen. (Pr 16:10) 27 Der Lebensgeist ist die Lampe des HERRN;^[1] mit ihr durchleuchtet er das Menschenherz und seine Gedanken.^[2] 28 Gottes Güte und Treue beschützen den König, und durch Güte festigt der König seine Herrschaft. (Ps 61:8; Pr 16:12) 29 Junge Männer können stolz sein auf ihre Kraft und die Alten auf ihr graues Haar. (Pr 16:31) 30 Striemen sind ein Heilmittel gegen die Bosheit, Schläge bessern den Charakter.^[3]
