New International Reader’s Version

1 I wish my head were a spring of water! I wish my eyes were a fountain of tears! I would weep day and night for my people who have been killed. 2 I wish I had somewhere to go in the desert where a traveller could stay! Then I could leave my people. I could get away from them. All of them commit adultery by worshipping other gods. They aren’t faithful to the LORD. 3 ‘They get ready to use their tongues like bows,’ announces the LORD. ‘Their mouths shoot out lies like arrows. They tell lies to gain power in the land. They go from one sin to another. They do not pay any attention to me. 4 Be on guard against your friends. Do not trust the members of your own family. Every one of them cheats. Every friend tells lies. 5 One friend cheats another. No one tells the truth. They have taught their tongues how to lie. They wear themselves out sinning. 6 Jeremiah, you live among people who tell lies. When they lie, they refuse to pay any attention to me,’ announces the LORD. 7 So the LORD who rules over all says, ‘I will put them through the fire to test them. What else can I do? My people are so sinful! 8 Their tongues are like deadly arrows. They tell lies. With their mouths all of them speak kindly to their neighbours. But in their hearts they set traps for them. 9 Shouldn’t I punish them for this?’ announces the LORD. ‘Shouldn’t I pay back the nation that does these things?’ 10 I will cry and mourn over the mountains. I will sing a song of sadness about the desert grasslands. They are dry and empty. No one travels through them. The mooing of cattle isn’t heard there. The birds have flown away. All the animals are gone. 11 The LORD says, ‘I will knock down all of Jerusalem’s buildings. I will make it a home for wild dogs. The towns of Judah will be completely destroyed. No one will be able to live in them.’ 12 Who is wise enough to understand these things? Who has been taught by the LORD? Who can explain them? Why has the land been destroyed so completely? Why has it become like a desert that no one can go across? 13 The LORD answered me, ‘Because my people have turned away from my law. I gave it to them. But they have not kept it. They have not obeyed me. 14 Instead, they have done what their stubborn hearts wanted them to do. They have worshipped the gods that are named Baal. They have done what their people have taught them to do through the years.’ 15 So now the LORD who rules over all speaks. He is the God of Israel. He says, ‘I will make these people eat bitter food. I will make them drink poisoned water. 16 I will scatter them among the nations. They and their people before them didn’t know about these nations. With swords I will chase these people. I will hunt them down until I have destroyed them.’ 17 The LORD rules over all. He says, ‘Here is something I want you to think about. Send for the women who mourn for the dead. Send for the most skilled among them.’ 18 Let them come quickly and weep for us. Let them cry until tears flow from our eyes. Let them weep until water pours out of our eyes. 19 People are heard weeping in Zion. They are saying, ‘We are destroyed! We are filled with shame! We must leave our land. Our houses have been torn down.’ 20 You women, hear the LORD’s message. Listen to what he’s saying. Teach your daughters how to mourn for the dead. Teach one another a song of sadness. 21 Death has climbed in through our windows. It has entered our forts. Death has removed the children from the streets. It has taken the young men out of the market. 22 Say, ‘The LORD announces, ‘ “Dead bodies will be like human waste lying in the open fields. They will lie there like corn that is cut down at harvest time. No one will gather them up.” ’ 23 The LORD says, ‘Do not let wise people boast about how wise they are. Do not let strong people boast about how strong they are. Do not let rich people boast about how rich they are. 24 But here is what the one who boasts should boast about. They should boast that they have the understanding to know me. I want them to know that I am the LORD. No matter what I do on earth, I am always kind, fair and right. And I take delight in this,’ announces the LORD. 25 ‘The days are coming when I will judge people,’ announces the LORD. ‘I will punish all those who are circumcised only in their bodies. 26 That includes the people of Egypt, Judah, Edom, Ammon and Moab. It also includes all those who live in the desert in places far away. None of the people in these nations is really circumcised. And not even the people of Israel are circumcised in their hearts.’

Ein Volk, das Gott bestrafen muss

1 Wüsste ich nur einen Platz in der Wüste, eine Herberge für durchreisende Karawanen! Dann würde ich wegziehen von meinem Volk, ich würde es verlassen. Denn es ist eine Bande von Abtrünnigen; alle haben dem HERRN die Treue gebrochen. 2 »Ihre Zunge ist wie ein schussbereiter Bogen«, sagt der HERR. »Lüge ist Trumpf, die Wahrheit unterliegt. Sie begehen Verbrechen über Verbrechen; von mir wollen sie nichts wissen. 3 Darum seid auf der Hut vor euren Freunden und traut selbst eurem Bruder nicht! Denn der Bruder ist auch nicht besser als Jakob und betrügt euch bestimmt^[1] und die Freunde reden nur schlecht über euch. (Ge 25:26; Ge 27:36; Jer 12:6; Mic 7:5)

4 Jeder betrügt jeden, niemand sagt die Wahrheit. Sie sind Meister im Lügen und so ins Böse verstrickt, dass sie sich nicht mehr daraus lösen können. 5 Unterdrückung folgt auf Unterdrückung, Betrug auf Betrug.^[2] Sie wollen mich nicht kennen.« 6 Deshalb sagt der HERR, der Herrscher der Welt:^[3] »Wie Metall im Feuer geschmolzen und gereinigt wird, so werde ich mein Volk durch das Feuer des Gerichts schicken. Es bleibt mir nichts anderes übrig. (Isa 48:10) 7 Ihre Worte sind wie tödliche Pfeile. Hinterhältig reden sie miteinander, täuschen Freundschaft und Wohlwollen vor, aber insgeheim stellen sie sich gegenseitig Fallen. (Ps 12:3; Ps 57:5) 8 Sollte ich ein solches Volk nicht bestrafen«, sagt der HERR, »sollte ich an ihm nicht Vergeltung üben?« (Jer 5:9)

Totenklage über Juda und Jerusalem

9 Ich will weinen über das Bergland, die Totenklage singen über die Weideplätze in der Steppe; denn alles ist verbrannt und verwüstet. Kein Mensch ist mehr unterwegs, das Blöken der Herden ist verstummt, selbst die Vögel und wilden Tiere sind geflohen und lassen sich nicht mehr sehen. 10 Der HERR sagt: »Jerusalem mache ich zum Trümmerhaufen, in dem die Schakale hausen. Die Städte in Juda mache ich zu Wüsten, in denen niemand mehr wohnt.« (Jer 26:18) 11 Warum ist es so weit gekommen? Warum wird das Land verbrannt und verwüstet, sodass kein Mensch mehr hindurchzieht? Gibt es einen Weisen, der das erklären kann, einen Propheten, dem der HERR es offenbart hat und der es uns sagen kann? 12 Der HERR selbst gibt darauf die Antwort: »Sie halten sich nicht an meine Weisung, sie hören nicht auf das, was ich sage. 13 Vielmehr tun sie, was ihr böses und eigensinniges Herz ihnen eingibt: Sie laufen den Baalen nach, wie sie es von ihren Vorfahren gelernt haben. (Jer 7:24) 14 Darum sage ich, der Herrscher der Welt, der Gott Israels: ›Ich werde diesem Volk bittere Kost zu essen geben und Gift zu trinken. (Jer 8:14) 15 Ich treibe sie fort zu fremden Völkern, von denen weder sie noch ihre Vorfahren etwas wussten; ich lasse Kriege gegen sie wüten, bis nichts mehr von ihnen übrig ist.‹ 16 Darum sage ich, der Herrscher der Welt: ›Begreift, was die Stunde geschlagen hat: Ruft die Klagefrauen! Holt die Frauen herbei, die sich aufs Weinen und Klagen verstehen!‹«^[4] 17 Ja, schnellstens sollen sie kommen und über uns das Klagelied anstimmen, damit unsere Augen von Tränen überfließen! 18 Horcht, vom Zionsberg hört man schon die Klage: »Ach, wir können es nicht fassen! Schmach und Schande stürzte auf uns ein. Alle unsere Häuser riss man ein. Unser Land – wir mussten es verlassen!« 19 Auf denn, ihr Frauen, begreift, was der HERR gesagt hat! Singt euren Töchtern das Klagelied vor, eine Frau soll es der anderen beibringen: 20 »Durch die Fenster kam der Tod herein, keins der Häuser hat er ausgelassen. Unsere Kinder holt er auf den Straßen, Burschen sammelt er vom Marktplatz ein.« 21 Auch das noch hat der HERR gesagt und hat mir befohlen, es weiterzusagen: »Menschenleichen werden wie Dünger auf den Äckern liegen. Wie Getreidehalme unter der Sichel des Schnitters, so werden die Menschen fallen, aber niemand wird da sein, um sie aufzuheben.« (Jer 14:16; Jer 16:4; Jer 25:33; Am 8:3)

Worauf ein Mensch stolz sein darf

22 Der HERR sagt: »Der Weise soll sich nicht wegen seiner Weisheit rühmen, der Starke nicht wegen seiner Stärke und der Reiche nicht wegen seines Reichtums. (Pr 21:30; 1Co 1:31; Sir 10:22) 23 Grund sich zu rühmen hat nur, wer mich erkennt und begreift, was ich will. Denn ich bin der HERR, der Liebe, Recht und Treue auf der Erde schafft! An Menschen, die sich danach richten, habe ich Freude.«

Gegen das Bündnis der Beschnittenen

24 »Der Tag kommt«, sagt der HERR, »an dem ich mit allen Beschnittenen abrechne: 25 mit den Ägyptern und den Leuten von Juda, mit den Edomitern, den Ammonitern, den Moabitern und mit den Stämmen in der Wüste, die sich ihre Schläfen kahl rasieren. Denn alle diese Völker – auch die Leute von Israel – sind für mich unbeschnitten, weil sie ihr Herz nicht beschnitten haben!« (Jer 4:4)
