Jeremiah buys a field

1 A message from the LORD came to Jeremiah. It came in the 10th year that Zedekiah was king of Judah. It was in the 18th year of the rule of Nebuchadnezzar. 2 The armies of the king of Babylon were getting ready to attack Jerusalem. Jeremiah the prophet was being held as a prisoner. He was kept in the courtyard of the guard. It was part of Judah’s royal palace. 3 Zedekiah, the king of Judah, had made Jeremiah a prisoner there. Zedekiah had said to him, ‘Why do you prophesy as you do? You say, “The LORD says, ‘I am about to hand over this city to the king of Babylon. He will capture it. 4 Zedekiah, the king of Judah, will not escape from the powerful hands of the armies of Babylon. He will certainly be handed over to the king of Babylon. Zedekiah will speak with him face to face. He will see him with his own eyes. 5 Nebuchadnezzar will take Zedekiah to Babylon. Zedekiah will remain there until I deal with him,’ announces the LORD. ‘Suppose you fight against the armies of Babylon. If you do, you will not succeed.’ ” ’ 6 Jeremiah said, ‘A message from the LORD came to me. The LORD said, 7 “Hanamel is going to come to you. He is the son of your uncle Shallum. Hanamel will say, ‘Buy my field at Anathoth. You are my closest relative. So it’s your right and duty to buy it.’ ” 8 ‘Then my cousin Hanamel came to me. I was in the courtyard of the guard. It happened just as the LORD had said it would. Hanamel said, “Buy my field at Anathoth. It is in the territory of Benjamin. It is your right to buy it and own it. So buy it for yourself.” ‘I knew that this was the LORD’s message. 9 So I bought the field at Anathoth from my cousin Hanamel. I weighed out 204 grams of silver for him. 10 I signed and sealed the deed of purchase. I had some people witness everything. And I weighed out the silver on the scales. 11 There were two copies of the deed. One was sealed and the other wasn’t. The deed included the terms and conditions of the sale. 12 I gave Baruch the copies of the deed. My cousin Hanamel saw me do this. The witnesses who had signed the deed were there too. So were all the Jews who were sitting in the courtyard of the guard. Baruch was the son of Neriah. Neriah was the son of Mahseiah. 13 ‘I gave Baruch directions in front of all of them. I said, 14 “The LORD who rules over all is the God of Israel. He says, ‘Take this deed of purchase. Take the sealed and unsealed copies. Put them in a clay jar. Then they will last a long time.’ 15 The LORD who rules over all is the God of Israel. He says, ‘Houses, fields and vineyards will again be bought in this land.’ ” 16 ‘I gave the deed of purchase to Baruch, the son of Neriah. Then I prayed to the LORD. I said, 17 ‘ “LORD and King, you have reached out your great and powerful arm. You have made the heavens and the earth. Nothing is too hard for you. 18 You show your love to thousands of people. But you cause the sins of parents to affect even their children. Great and powerful God, your name is the LORD Who Rules Over All. 19 Your purposes are great. Your acts are mighty. Your eyes see everything people do. You reward each one of them in keeping with their conduct. You do this based on what they have done. 20 You performed signs and wonders in Egypt. And you have continued to do them to this day. You have done them in Israel and among all people. You are still known for doing them. 21 You brought your people Israel out of Egypt. You did it with signs and wonders. You reached out your mighty hand and powerful arm. You did great and wonderful things. 22 You gave Israel this land that you promised to their people of long ago. It is a land that has plenty of milk and honey. 23 Israel came in and took it over. But they did not obey you. They didn’t follow your law. They didn’t do what you commanded them to do. So you brought all this trouble on them. 24 ‘ “See how ramps are built up against Jerusalem’s walls to attack it. The city will be handed over to the armies of Babylon. They are attacking it. It will fall because of war, hunger and plague. What you said would happen is now happening, as you can see. 25 LORD and King, the city will be handed over to the armies of Babylon. In spite of that, you tell me to buy a field. You say, ‘Pay for it with silver. And have the sale witnessed.’ ” ’ 26 Then a message from the LORD came to Jeremiah. The LORD said, 27 ‘I am the LORD. I am the God of all people. Is anything too hard for me?’ 28 So the LORD says, ‘I am about to hand this city over to the armies of Babylon. I will give it to Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon. He will capture it. 29 The armies of Babylon are now attacking this city. They will come in and set it on fire. They will burn it down. They will burn down the houses where the people made me very angry. They burned incense on their roofs to the god named Baal. And they poured out drink offerings to other gods. 30 ‘The people of Israel and Judah have done nothing but evil in my eyes. They have done it since the nation was young. In fact, they have done nothing but make me very angry. They have worshipped statues of gods their own hands have made,’ announces the LORD. 31 ‘This city has always stirred up my great anger. It has done it since the day it was built. Now I must remove it from my sight. 32 The people of Israel and Judah have made me very angry. They have done many evil things. They, their kings and officials have sinned. So have their priests and prophets. And the people of Judah and Jerusalem have also sinned. 33 They turned their backs to me. They would not face me. I taught them again and again. But they would not listen or pay attention when they were corrected. 34 They set up the hateful statues of their gods. They did it in the house where I have put my Name. They made my house “unclean”. 35 The people built high places for Baal in the Valley of Ben Hinnom. That is where they sacrifice their children to Molek in the fire. That is something I did not command. It did not even enter my mind. They did something I hate. They made Judah sin.’ 36 Here is what you people of Judah are saying about this city. ‘By war, hunger and plague it will be handed over to the king of Babylon.’ But here is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says. 37 ‘You can be sure that I will gather my people again. I will send them away when my burning anger blazes out against them. But I will bring them back to this place. And I will let them live in safety. 38 They will be my people. And I will be their God. 39 I will give them a single purpose in life. Then, they will always have respect for me. Then all will go well for them. And it will also go well for their children after them. 40 I will make a covenant with them that will last for ever. I promise that I will never stop doing good to them. I will cause them to respect me. Then they will never turn away from me again. 41 I will take pleasure in doing good things for them. I will certainly plant them in this land. I will do these things with all my heart and soul.’ 42 The LORD says, ‘I have brought all this horrible trouble on these people. But now I will give them all the good things I have promised them. 43 Once more fields will be bought in this land. It is the land about which you now say, “It is a dry and empty desert. It doesn’t have any people or animals in it. It has been handed over to the armies of Babylon.” 44 Fields will be bought with silver. Deeds will be signed, sealed and witnessed. That will be done in the territory of Benjamin. It will be done in the villages around Jerusalem and in the towns of Judah. It will also be done in the towns of the central hill country. And it will be done in the towns of the western hills and the Negev Desert. I will bless their people with great success again,’ announces the LORD.

1 Im zehnten Regierungsjahr von Zidkija, dem König von Juda – es war das achtzehnte Regierungsjahr Nebukadnezzars –, erging das Wort des HERRN an Jeremia. (Jer 1:3; Jer 52:1; Jer 52:29) 2 Das Heer Nebukadnezzars belagerte damals Jerusalem, der Prophet aber befand sich als Gefangener im Wachthof am Königspalast. (2Ki 25:1; Jer 37:21; Jer 38:28) 3 Der König hielt ihn dort gefangen, weil Jeremia verkündet hatte: »So spricht der HERR: ›Ich gebe diese Stadt in die Gewalt des Königs von Babylonien; er wird sie erobern. (2Ki 25:3; Jer 34:2) 4 König Zidkija wird nicht entkommen, sondern unweigerlich in die Hände des Babylonierkönigs fallen. Er wird ihm Auge in Auge gegenübertreten und ihm Rede und Antwort stehen müssen. 5 Nebukadnezzar wird ihn nach Babylon mitnehmen und dort wird er bleiben bis zu seinem Tod.^[1] Das sage ich, der HERR. Euer Kampf gegen die Babylonier ist sinnlos!‹« (Jer 21:7) 6 Dort im Wachthof also erging das Wort des HERRN an Jeremia. Er selbst berichtet darüber: 7 Der HERR sagte zu mir: »Hanamel, der Sohn deines Onkels Schallum, wird zu dir kommen und dich bitten: ›Kauf mir doch meinen Acker in Anatot ab! Ich bin in Schwierigkeiten und nach der gesetzlichen Vorschrift zur Erhaltung des Sippenbesitzes^[2] hast du die Pflicht, ihn zu erwerben.‹« (Le 25:25) 8 Und wirklich, mein Vetter Hanamel kam zu mir in den Wachthof, wie der HERR es angekündigt hatte, und sagte: »Kauf mir doch meinen Acker in Anatot im Gebiet von Benjamin ab! Dir als meinem nächsten Verwandten steht das Besitzrecht zu und nach dem Gesetz musst du dafür sorgen, dass er im Besitz der Sippe bleibt.^[3] Bitte, kauf ihn!« Ich begriff, dass dies ein Befehl des HERRN war. 9 Ich kaufte den Acker und gab meinem Vetter das Geld: siebzehn Silberstücke. 10 Der Kaufvertrag wurde ausgefertigt. Vor Zeugen wurde das Original versiegelt und das Silber abgewogen. 11 Den Kaufvertrag – und zwar das vorschriftsmäßig versiegelte Original zusammen mit der Abschrift – 12 gab ich Baruch, dem Sohn von Nerija und Enkel von Machseja. Ich tat das in Gegenwart meines Vetters und der Zeugen, die den Vertrag unterschrieben hatten, und vor den Augen aller Männer aus Juda, die sich im Wachthof aufhielten. (Jer 36:4; Jer 43:3; Jer 45:1) 13 Dann sagte ich zu Baruch vor ihnen allen: 14 »So spricht der HERR, der Herrscher der Welt,^[4] der Gott Israels: ›Nimm diesen Kaufvertrag, das versiegelte Original zusammen mit der Abschrift, und leg ihn in ein Tongefäß, damit er lange unversehrt erhalten bleibt. 15 Denn – so sagt der HERR, der Herrscher der Welt, der Gott Israels: Eines Tages wird man wieder Häuser und Äcker und Weinberge kaufen in diesem Land.‹« 16 Nachdem ich Baruch den Kaufvertrag übergeben hatte, betete ich zum HERRN: 17 »Ach, HERR, du mächtiger Gott, durch deine gewaltige Kraft und Macht hast du Himmel und Erde geschaffen. Nichts ist dir unmöglich. (Job 42:2; Jer 10:12) 18 Du erweist den Menschen Liebe und Treue über tausend Generationen hin, doch wenn sie Schuld auf sich geladen haben, bestrafst du auch ihre Kinder dafür. Du großer, starker Gott – ›der HERR, der Herrscher der Welt‹ ist dein Name: (Ex 20:5) 19 Groß sind deine Pläne und machtvoll deine Taten. Du achtest genau auf das, was die Menschen treiben, und gibst jedem, was er aufgrund seiner Taten verdient hat. (Jer 16:17; Jer 17:10) 20 Damals in Ägypten und noch bis heute hast du staunenerregende Wunder getan, an uns wie an anderen Völkern, sodass dein großer Name in aller Welt bekannt geworden ist. (Ps 78:43) 21 Unter staunenerregenden Wundern hast du mit starker Hand und ausgestrecktem Arm dein Volk Israel aus Ägypten herausgeführt; deine Feinde vergingen vor Angst und Schrecken. 22 Du hast den Leuten von Israel dieses Land gegeben, das du ihren Vorfahren mit einem Eid zugesagt hattest, dieses Land, das von Milch und Honig überfließt. (Ge 12:7; Ex 3:8) 23 Als sie aber das Land in Besitz genommen hatten, da hörten sie nicht mehr auf dich und kümmerten sich nicht um deine Weisungen. Alles, was du ihnen zu tun befohlen hattest – sie taten es nicht. Da hast du schließlich all dieses Unheil über sie hereinbrechen lassen. 24 Die Angriffsrampen, über die die Babylonier die Stadt erstürmen wollen, sind schon bis an die Stadtmauern vorgetrieben. Bald wird Jerusalem fallen; die Waffen der Feinde zusammen mit Hunger und Pest sorgen dafür. Es ist eingetroffen, was du angedroht hast; du siehst es selbst. 25 Und doch, HERR, mächtiger Gott, hast du mir befohlen: ›Kauf dir den Acker! Tu es im Beisein von Zeugen!‹ Dabei ist Jerusalem schon so gut wie in der Hand der Babylonier!« 26 Da erging an mich das Wort des HERRN, er sagte: 27 »Ich bin der HERR, der Gott aller Menschen. Sollte mir etwas unmöglich sein? (Jer 32:17) 28 Ich gebe jetzt diese Stadt in die Hand der Babylonier und ihres Königs Nebukadnezzar. 29 Seine Truppen werden in die Stadt eindringen und sie in Brand stecken. Jerusalem wird in Schutt und Asche sinken mit all den Häusern, auf deren Dächern man zu Ehren Baals Weihrauch verbrannt und für fremde Götter Trankopfer ausgegossen hat, um mich zu beleidigen. (2Ki 25:1; Jer 19:13) 30 Die Leute von Israel und von Juda haben von jeher nur getan, was mir missfällt, durch ihr ganzes Tun und Treiben haben sie meinen Zorn erregt. 31 Diese Stadt Jerusalem hat vom Tag ihrer Gründung an bis heute meinen Zorn derart herausgefordert, dass ich sie aus meinen Augen wegschaffen muss. 32 Ich muss es tun wegen all des Bösen, das die Leute von Israel und von Juda, besonders aber ihre Könige und hohen Beamten, ihre Priester und Propheten und die Bewohner Jerusalems verübt haben. 33 Sie wandten sich völlig von mir ab. Wieder und wieder sagte ich ihnen, was sie tun sollten; sie hörten nicht darauf, sie nahmen keine Belehrung an. (Jer 5:3) 34 Sie haben sogar im Tempel ihre abscheulichen Götzenbilder aufgestellt und dadurch das Haus geschändet, das mein Eigentum ist. (Jer 7:30) 35 Im Hinnom-Tal bauten sie die Opferstätte für Baal, um dort ihre Söhne und Töchter als Opfer zu verbrennen.^[5] Das habe ich nicht befohlen; es ist mir nie in den Sinn gekommen, so etwas von ihnen zu verlangen. Mit diesem abscheulichen Treiben haben sie ganz Juda zum Götzendienst verführt. (Jer 7:31) 36 Deshalb ist es nun so weit, dass ihr sagt: Diese Stadt fällt in die Hand Nebukadnezzars, dafür wird seine Heeresmacht sorgen zusammen mit Hunger und Pest. Und trotzdem – von eben dieser Stadt sage ich, der Herr, der Gott Israels: 37 Ich werde ihre Bewohner wieder sammeln aus all den Ländern, wohin ich sie in meinem glühenden Zorn versprenge. Ich führe sie zurück und lasse sie in Frieden und Sicherheit hier leben. (Jer 23:3) 38 Sie sollen wieder mein Volk sein und ich will ihr Gott sein. (Jer 7:23) 39 Ich werde ihr Denken und Tun auf ein einziges Ziel ausrichten: mich jederzeit ernst zu nehmen, damit es ihnen und ihren Nachkommen gut geht. (Jer 24:7) 40 Mehr noch, für alle kommenden Zeiten schließe ich einen Bund mit ihnen und verpflichte mich: Ich werde nicht mehr aufhören, ihnen Gutes zu tun, und ich werde die Ehrfurcht vor mir in ihr Herz legen, sodass sie sich nicht mehr von mir abwenden. (Jer 29:11; Jer 31:33) 41 Dann wird es mir eine Freude sein, ihnen Gutes zu tun; ich werde sie endgültig in dieses Land einpflanzen, mit ganzem Herzen und mit aller Kraft werde ich das tun. (Jer 1:10; Zep 3:17) 42 Denn wie ich all dieses Unglück über das Volk von Juda gebracht habe, so will ich ihm auch das Gute bringen, das ich ihm versprochen habe. Das sage ich, der HERR. 43 In diesem Land, von dem du und die anderen sagen: ›Es ist den Babyloniern ausgeliefert und wird zu einer Wüste werden, in der kein Mensch und kein Stück Vieh mehr lebt‹, in diesem Land werden wieder Äcker gekauft werden. 44 Man wird Kaufverträge ausstellen und versiegeln und Zeugen hinzurufen. Überall hier im Land! Im Gebiet von Benjamin, in Jerusalem und Umgebung und in allen Städten von Juda, ob sie oben im Gebirge liegen oder im Hügelland oder in der Steppe im Süden! Denn ich werde für mein Volk alles wieder zum Guten wenden. Das sage ich, der HERR!« (Jer 29:13)
