1Why do you fight and argue among yourselves? Isn’t it because of your sinful desires? They fight within you.2You want something, but you don’t have it. So you kill. You want what others have, but you can’t get what you want. So you argue and fight. You don’t have what you want, because you don’t ask God.3When you do ask for something, you don’t receive it. That’s because you ask for the wrong reason. You want to spend your money on your sinful pleasures.4You are not faithful to God. Don’t you know that to be a friend of the world is to hate God? So anyone who chooses to be the world’s friend becomes God’s enemy.5Don’t you know what Scripture says? God wants the spirit in us to belong only to him. God caused this spirit to live in us. Don’t you think Scripture has a reason for saying this?6But God continues to give us more grace. That’s why Scripture says, ‘God opposes those who are proud. But he gives grace to those who are humble.’ (Pr 3:34)7So obey God. Stand up to the devil. He will run away from you.8Come near to God, and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners. Make your hearts pure, you who can’t make up your minds.9Be full of sorrow. Cry and weep. Change your laughter to mourning. Change your joy to sadness.10Be humble in front of the Lord. And he will lift you up.11My brothers and sisters, don’t speak against one another. Anyone who speaks against a brother or sister speaks against the law. And anyone who judges another believer judges the law. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it. Instead, you are acting as if you were its judge.12There is only one Lawgiver and Judge. He is the God who is able to save life or destroy it. But who are you to judge your neighbour?
Bragging about tomorrow
13Now listen, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city. We will spend a year there. We will buy and sell and make money.’14You don’t even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? It is a mist that appears for a little while. Then it disappears.15Instead, you should say, ‘If it pleases the Lord, we will live and do this or that.’16As it is, you boast. You boast about the evil plans your pride produces. This kind of boasting is evil.17So suppose someone knows the good deeds they should do. But suppose they don’t do them. By not doing these good deeds, they sin.
Vom Unfrieden in der Gemeinde, seinen Ursachen und seiner Überwindung
1Woher kommen denn die Kämpfe und Streitigkeiten zwischen euch? Doch nur aus den Leidenschaften, die ständig in eurem Innern toben! (Ro 7:5)2Ihr verzehrt euch nach etwas, was ihr gerne hättet. Ihr mordet[1] und seid eifersüchtig, aber das bringt euch dem ersehnten Ziel nicht näher. Ihr versucht es mit Kampf und Gewalt; aber ihr bekommt trotzdem nicht, was ihr wollt, weil ihr Gott nicht darum bittet.3Und wenn ihr ihn bittet, bekommt ihr es nicht, weil ihr nur in der Absicht bittet, eure unersättliche Genusssucht zu befriedigen.4Eure Liebe gehört nicht Gott, ihr handelt an ihm wie Ehebrecher! Wisst ihr denn nicht:[2] Freundschaft mit dieser Welt bedeutet Feindschaft gegen Gott. Wer sich also mit der Welt befreunden will, verfeindet sich mit Gott. (Mt 6:24; 1Jo 2:15)5Es heißt nicht umsonst in den Heiligen Schriften:[3] »Mit Leidenschaft erhebt Gott Anspruch auf den Geist, den er, der Schöpfer, in uns wohnen ließ.«6Aber in seiner Gnade will er uns noch viel mehr schenken; denn es heißt auch: »Gott widersetzt sich den Überheblichen, aber denen, die gering von sich denken, wendet er seine Liebe zu.« (Pr 3:34; Mt 23:12; 1Pe 5:5)7Deshalb ordnet euch Gott unter! Leistet dem Teufel Widerstand, und er wird vor euch fliehen. (Eph 6:12; 1Pe 5:8)8Nähert euch Gott, und er wird sich euch nähern. Reinigt eure Hände von Schuld, ihr Sünder! Gebt eure Herzen Gott hin, ihr Unentschlossenen! (Ps 18:21; Ps 18:25; Isa 1:16; Zec 1:3; Mal 3:7)9Klagt über euren Zustand, trauert und weint! Nicht mehr lachen sollt ihr, sondern weinen. Euer Jubel soll sich in Jammer verkehren und eure Freude in Trauer.10Beugt euch tief vor dem Herrn, dann wird er euch hoch erheben! (1Pe 5:6)
Nicht verurteilen
11Liebe Brüder und Schwestern, verleumdet einander nicht! Wer seinen Bruder oder seine Schwester[4] verleumdet oder verurteilt, verleumdet und verurteilt damit das Gesetz Gottes, das ein solches Verhalten untersagt. Anstatt das Gesetz zu befolgen, wirft er sich zum Richter auf. (Le 19:16; Ps 101:5; Wis 1:11)12Aber nur Gott, der das Gesetz gegeben hat, darf richten. Er allein kann verurteilen oder freisprechen. Für wen hältst du dich, dass du deinen Mitmenschen verurteilst! (Mt 7:1; Ro 14:4; 1Co 4:5)
Warnung vor Selbstsicherheit und Überheblichkeit
13Nun zu euch, die ihr sagt: »Heute oder morgen werden wir in die und die Stadt reisen! Dort werden wir ein Jahr lang Geschäfte machen und viel Geld verdienen.« (Pr 27:1; Lu 12:18)14Woher wisst ihr denn, was morgen sein wird? Was ist euer Leben? Es gleicht einem Dampfwölkchen, das aufsteigt und sich sogleich wieder auflöst. (Job 7:9)15Sagt lieber: »Wenn der Herr es will, werden wir noch leben und dies oder jenes tun.« (Ac 18:21; 1Co 4:19; 1Co 16:7)16Ihr aber seid stolz und überheblich; und ein solcher Stolz ist verwerflich. (1Jo 2:16)17Im Übrigen gilt: Wer die Zeit und die Mittel hat, Gutes zu tun, und es nicht tut, macht sich schuldig. (Lu 12:47)
