The sign of Immanuel

1 Ahaz was king of Judah. Rezin was king of Aram. And Pekah was king of Israel. Rezin and Pekah marched up to fight against Jerusalem. But they couldn’t overpower it. Ahaz was the son of Jotham and the grandson of Uzziah. Pekah was the son of Remaliah. 2 The royal family of Ahaz was told, ‘The army of Aram has joined forces with Ephraim’s army.’ So the hearts of Ahaz and his people trembled with fear. They shook just as trees in the forest shake when the wind blows through them. 3 The LORD said to Isaiah, ‘Go out and see Ahaz. Take your son Shear-Jashub with you. Meet Ahaz at the end of the channel that brings water from the Upper Pool. It is on the road to the Washerman’s Field. 4 Tell Ahaz, “Be careful. Stay calm. Do not be afraid. Do not lose hope because of the great anger of Rezin, Aram and the son of Remaliah. After all, they are nothing but two pieces of smoking firewood. 5 Aram, Ephraim and Remaliah’s son have planned to destroy you. They said, 6 ‘Let’s march into Judah and attack it. Let’s tear everything down. Then we can share the land among ourselves. And we can make Tabeel’s son king over it.’ 7 But I am the LORD and King. I say, ‘ “ ‘That will not happen. It will not take place. 8 The capital of Aram is Damascus. And the ruler of Damascus is only Rezin. Do not worry about the people of Ephraim. They will be too crushed to be considered a people. That will happen before 65 years are over. 9 The capital of Ephraim is Samaria. And the ruler of Samaria is only Remaliah’s son. If you do not stand firm in your faith, you will not stand at all.’ ” ’ 10 The LORD spoke to Ahaz through Isaiah again. He said, 11 ‘I am the LORD your God. Ask me to give you a sign. It can be anything in the deepest grave or in the highest heaven.’ 12 But Ahaz said, ‘I won’t ask. I won’t test the LORD.’ 13 Then Isaiah said, ‘Listen, you members of the royal family of David! Isn’t it enough for you to test the patience of human beings? Are you also going to test the patience of my God? 14 The Lord himself will give you a sign. The virgin is going to have a baby. She will give birth to a son. And he will be called Immanuel. 15 He will still be very young when he can decide between right and wrong. 16 Even before then, the lands of the two kings you fear will be ruined. 17 The LORD will also bring the king of Assyria against you. And he will bring him against your people and the whole royal family. That will be a time of trouble. It will be unlike any since the people of Ephraim broke away from Judah.’

The Lord uses Assyria to judge Judah

18 At that time the LORD will whistle for the Egyptians. They will come like flies from the River Nile in Egypt. He will also whistle for the Assyrians. They will come from their country like bees. 19 All of them will come and camp in the deep valleys. They will camp in caves in the rocks. And they’ll camp near bushes and water holes. 20 At that time the Lord will use the Assyrians to punish you. Ahaz had hired them earlier from east of the River Euphrates. Now their king will be like a razor in the Lord’s hand. He will shave the hair from your head and private parts. He will also shave off your beards. 21 At that time a person may only be able to keep alive one young cow and two goats. 22 But they will give plenty of milk to live on. In fact, everyone left in the land will only have milk curds and honey to eat. 23 The land used to have vineyards with 1,000 vines worth 12 kilograms of silver. But soon the whole land will be covered with thorns and bushes. 24 Hunters will go there with bows and arrows. That’s because it will be covered with bushes and thorns. 25 All the hills used to be ploughed with hoes. But you won’t go there anymore. That’s because you will be afraid of the thorns and bushes. Cattle will be turned loose on those hills. Sheep will also run there.

Eine Glaubensprobe für Juda und Jerusalem

1 In Juda war Ahas, der Sohn von Jotam und Enkel von Usija, König. Damals zogen Rezin, der König von Syrien, und Pekach, der Sohn von Remalja, der König von Israel, gegen Jerusalem heran. Sie griffen die Stadt an, konnten sie aber nicht einnehmen. (2Ki 16:5) 2 Im Königspalast wurde gemeldet, die syrischen Truppen stünden schon im Gebiet von Efraïm.^[1] Der König zitterte und mit ihm das ganze Volk, wie Bäume, die vom Sturm geschüttelt werden. 3 Da gab der HERR dem Propheten Jesaja den Auftrag: »Nimm deinen Sohn Schear-Jaschub mit und geh zu König Ahas hinaus, ans Ende der Wasserleitung beim oberen Teich, auf die Straße, die zum Tuchmacherfeld führt! (Isa 36:2) 4 Sag zu Ahas: ›Bleib ruhig, hab keine Angst! Werde nicht weich vor dem Zorn Rezins und Pekachs; sie sind nur qualmende Brennholzstummel. 5 Die Syrer unter Rezin und die Efraïmiten unter dem Sohn Remaljas planen zwar Böses gegen dich. Sie sagen: 6 Wir wollen nach Juda hinaufziehen, den Leuten dort Angst einjagen, das Land an uns bringen und als neuen König den Sohn Tabeals einsetzen! 7 Aber der HERR, der mächtige Gott, sagt: Das wird ihnen nicht gelingen! 8 Syrien ist nicht stärker als Damaskus und Damaskus nicht stärker als Rezin. Und das Reich der Leute von Efraïm? In 65 Jahren wird es am Ende sein und das Volk wird nicht mehr bestehen. 9 Denn Efraïm ist nicht stärker als Samaria und Samaria nicht stärker als der Sohn Remaljas. Vertraut auf den HERRN! Wenn ihr nicht bei ihm bleibt, dann bleibt ihr überhaupt nicht!‹«^[2] (Ex 14:14; Isa 28:16; Isa 30:15; Isa 37:6)

Trotz des Unglaubens steht Gott zu seiner Zusage

10 Weiter ließ der HERR dem König sagen: 11 »Fordere doch als Bestätigung ein Zeichen vom HERRN, deinem Gott, ganz gleich, ob aus der Totenwelt oder aus dem Himmel!« (Jud 6:17; 1Ki 13:3; Jer 44:29; Mr 8:11)

12 Ahas antwortete: »Ich verlange kein Zeichen, ich will den HERRN nicht auf die Probe stellen.« 13 Da sagte Jesaja: »Hört, ihr vom Königshaus! Es reicht euch wohl nicht, dass ihr den Menschen zur Last werdet! Müsst ihr auch noch die Geduld meines Gottes auf die Probe stellen? 14 Deshalb wird der Herr euch von sich aus ein Zeichen geben: Die junge Frau^[3] wird schwanger werden und einen Sohn zur Welt bringen, den wird sie Immanuël (Gott steht uns bei) nennen. (Mt 1:23) 15 Er wird Butter und Honig essen, bis er Gutes und Böses unterscheiden kann. (Ex 3:8) 16 Noch bevor er alt genug ist, zwischen Gut und Böse zu unterscheiden, wird das Land der beiden Könige verwüstet sein, vor denen du jetzt Angst hast. (Isa 8:4) 17 Aber der HERR wird für dich, dein Volk und deine Familie eine Unglückszeit kommen lassen, wie man sie seit der Trennung Israels von Juda nicht erlebt hat. Das wird durch den König von Assyrien geschehen.«

Eine dunkle Zukunft

18 Der Tag kommt, an dem der HERR die Feinde herbeiholen wird. Er pfeift dem Fliegenschwarm an den Mündungen des Nils und dem Bienenschwarm in Assyrien (Isa 5:26) 19 und sie werden kommen und sich niederlassen in den Talschluchten und Felsspalten, in allen Dornenhecken, an allen Tränkstellen. 20 Wenn es so weit ist, wird der Herr den König von Assyrien in Dienst nehmen, von jenseits des Eufrats holt er ihn herbei. Er wird ihn als Schermesser benutzen, um euch das Kopfhaar abzuscheren, auch die Schamhaare und den Bart. 21 Wenn diese Zeit kommt, wird jeder nur noch eine Kuh und zwei Ziegen haben. 22 Aber die werden so viel Milch geben, dass die ganze Familie Butter essen kann. Wer dann noch im Land übrig geblieben ist, wird sich mit Butter und Honig ernähren. 23 Wenn diese Zeit kommt, wird man die Weinberge ungepflegt lassen müssen, sogar solche, die tausend Weinstöcke tragen, jeder ein Silberstück wert. Sie werden von Dornen und Disteln überwuchert. 24 Das ganze Land wird voller Dornen und Disteln sein, man wird höchstens noch mit Pfeil und Bogen dorthin gehen, um zu jagen. 25 Auch die Hügel, die jetzt noch mit der Hacke bestellt werden, wird niemand mehr betreten aus Angst vor den Dornen und Disteln. Rinder wird man dort weiden lassen und Schafe werden den Boden zertreten.
