New International Reader’s Version

1 Wake up! Zion, wake up! Dress yourself with strength as if it were your clothes. Holy city of Jerusalem, put on your clothes of glory. Those who haven’t been circumcised will never enter you again. Neither will those who are ‘unclean’. 2 Get up, Jerusalem! Shake off your dust. Take your place on your throne. Captured people of Zion, remove the chains from your neck. 3 The LORD says, ‘When you were sold as slaves, no one paid anything for you. Now no one will pay any money to set you free.’ 4 The LORD and King continues, ‘Long ago my people went down to Egypt. They lived there for a while. Later, Assyria crushed them without any reason. 5 ‘Now look at what has happened to them,’ announces the LORD. ‘Once again my people have been taken away. And no one paid anything for them. Those who rule over them boast about it,’ announces the LORD. ‘All day long without stopping, people speak evil things against my name. 6 So the day will come when my people will really know the meaning of my name. They will know what kind of God I am. They will know that I told them in advance they would return to their land. They will know that it was I.’ 7 What a beautiful sight it is to see messengers coming with good news! How beautiful to see them coming down from the mountains with a message about peace! How wonderful it is when they bring the good news that we are saved! How wonderful when they say to Zion, ‘Your God rules!’ 8 Listen! Those on guard duty are shouting out the message. With their own eyes they see the LORD returning to Zion. So they shout for joy. 9 Burst into songs of joy together, you broken-down buildings in Jerusalem. The LORD has comforted his people. He has set Jerusalem free. 10 The LORD will use the power of his holy arm to save his people. All the nations will see him do it. Everyone from one end of the earth to the other will see it. 11 You who carry the objects that belong to the LORD’s temple, leave Babylon! Leave it! Get out of there! Don’t touch anything that isn’t pure and ‘clean’. Come out of Babylon and be pure. 12 But this time you won’t have to leave in a hurry. You won’t have to rush away. The LORD will go ahead of you and lead you. The God of Israel will follow behind you and guard you.

The suffering and glory of the Lord’s servant

13 The LORD says, ‘My servant will act wisely and accomplish his task. He will be highly honoured. He will be greatly respected. 14 Many people were shocked when they saw him. He was so scarred that he no longer looked like a person. His body was so twisted that he did not look like a human being anymore. 15 But many nations will be surprised when they see what he has done. Kings will be so amazed that they will not be able to say anything. They will understand things they were never told. They will know the meaning of things they never heard.’

1 Wach auf, Jerusalem, wach auf! Raff dich auf! Zieh deine prächtigsten Kleider an, du Heilige Stadt! Künftig darf niemand mehr dich betreten, der unbeschnitten oder unrein ist. (Eze 44:9; Re 21:2; Re 21:27) 2 Schüttle den Staub deiner Schande von dir ab und setze dich wieder auf deinen Thron! Der Strick um deinen Hals ist gelöst, du bist keine Gefangene mehr! 3 Denn der HERR sagt: »Als ich euch in die Sklaverei verkaufte, habe ich kein Geld dafür genommen. Darum sollt ihr nun auch ohne Lösegeld befreit werden.« (Isa 45:13; Isa 50:1; Isa 52:5)

Gott befreit sein Volk aus Babylon

4 Der HERR, der mächtige Gott, sagt: »Am Anfang zog mein Volk nach Ägypten und musste dort in der Fremde leben. Später kamen die Assyrer und haben es ohne Grund unterjocht. (Ge 46:5; 2Ki 17:6) 5 Und wie steht es jetzt? Man hat sie wie Sklaven weggeführt und nichts dafür bezahlt. Ihre Unterdrücker brüsten sich damit, ununterbrochen schmähen sie mich und ziehen meinen Namen in den Schmutz. (2Ki 25:11; Isa 48:11) 6 Deshalb werde ich eingreifen, und mein Volk wird erkennen, wer ich bin. Sie werden erfahren, dass ich zur Stelle bin!«

Gott kehrt mit seinem Volk zurück

7 Was für eine Freude! Über die Berge kommt der Siegesbote herbeigeeilt! Er bringt gute Nachricht, er verkündet Frieden und Rettung, er sagt zur Zionsstadt: »Dein Gott ist König der ganzen Welt!« (Ps 47:6; Isa 40:9; Isa 41:27; Na 2:1; Ro 10:15; Eph 6:15)

8 Horch, die Wächter der Stadt rufen laut, sie jubeln vor Freude; denn sie sehen mit eigenen Augen, wie der HERR auf den Berg Zion zurückkehrt. (Isa 40:3; Eze 43:1) 9 Jubelt vor Freude, ihr Trümmer Jerusalems; denn der HERR hat Erbarmen mit seinem Volk, er befreit Jerusalem. 10 Er greift ein, er hat seinen heiligen Arm vor den Augen aller Völker erhoben. Bis in den letzten Winkel der Erde sehen sie, wie unser Gott uns rettet. (Ps 98:1) 11 Fort! Fort! Zieht weg von hier! Trennt euch von allem, was unrein ist! Zieht weg aus dem fremden Land, verlasst Babylon! Macht euch rein, denn ihr tragt die Geräte für den Tempel des HERRN. (2Ki 25:14; Isa 48:20; 2Co 6:17) 12 Diesmal sollt ihr nicht in Hast und Eile ausziehen, als müsstet ihr fliehen. Der HERR, der Gott Israels, geht vor euch her und er selbst beschließt euren Zug. (Ex 12:11; Ex 13:21)

Er trug unsere Schuld

13 Der HERR sagt: »Gebt acht: Meinem Bevollmächtigten wird gelingen, wozu ich ihn bestellt habe; er wird zu großem Ansehen und höchsten Ehren gelangen. (Isa 49:1) 14 Viele haben sich entsetzt von ihm abgewandt, so entstellt war er. Er hatte keine Ähnlichkeit mehr mit einem Menschen. 15 Doch nun werden viele Völker über ihn staunen,^[1] sogar ihren Königen wird es die Sprache verschlagen. Was niemals zuvor geschehen ist, das erleben sie jetzt; wovon sie noch nie etwas gehört haben, das sehen sie mit eigenen Augen.« (Ro 15:21)
