The tower of Babel

1 The whole world had only one language, and everyone spoke it. 2 They moved to the east and found a broad valley in Babylon. There they made their home. 3 They said to one another, ‘Come on! Let’s make bricks and bake them well.’ They used bricks instead of stones. They used tar to hold the bricks together. 4 Then they said, ‘Come on! Let’s build a city for ourselves. Let’s build a tower that reaches to the sky. We’ll make a name for ourselves. Then we won’t be scattered over the whole earth.’ 5 But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. 6 He said, ‘All these people are united and speak the same language. That is why they can do all this. Now they will be able to do anything they plan. 7 Come on! Let us go down and mix up their language. Then they will not be able to understand one another.’ 8 So the LORD scattered them from there over the whole earth. And they stopped building the city. 9 There the LORD mixed up the language of the whole world. That’s why the city was called Babel. From there the LORD scattered them over the whole earth.

The family line of Shem

10 Here is the story of Shem’s family line. It was two years after the flood. When Shem was 100 years old, he became the father of Arphaxad. 11 After Arphaxad was born, Shem lived 500 years and had other sons and daughters. 12 When Arphaxad had lived 35 years, he became the father of Shelah. 13 After Shelah was born, Arphaxad lived 403 years and had other sons and daughters. 14 When Shelah had lived 30 years, he became the father of Eber. 15 After Eber was born, Shelah lived 403 years and had other sons and daughters. 16 When Eber had lived 34 years, he became the father of Peleg. 17 After Peleg was born, Eber lived 430 years and had other sons and daughters. 18 When Peleg had lived 30 years, he became the father of Reu. 19 After Reu was born, Peleg lived 209 years and had other sons and daughters. 20 When Reu had lived 32 years, he became the father of Serug. 21 After Serug was born, Reu lived 207 years and had other sons and daughters. 22 When Serug had lived 30 years, he became the father of Nahor. 23 After Nahor was born, Serug lived 200 years and had other sons and daughters. 24 When Nahor had lived 29 years, he became the father of Terah. 25 After Terah was born, Nahor lived 119 years and had other sons and daughters. 26 After Terah was 70 years old, he became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran.

The family line of Abram

27 Here is the story of Terah’s family line. Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran. And Haran became the father of Lot. 28 Haran died in the city of Ur in Babylonia, the land where he was born. Haran died while his father Terah was still alive. 29 Abram and Nahor both got married. The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai. The name of Nahor’s wife was Milkah, the daughter of Haran. Haran was the father of Milkah and Iscah. 30 But Sarai wasn’t able to have children. 31 Terah left Ur in Babylon. He took with him his son Abram and his grandson Lot, the son of Haran. Terah also took his daughter-in-law Sarai, the wife of his son Abram. All of them left together to go to Canaan. But when they came to Harran, they made their home there. 32 Terah lived for 205 years. And then he died in Harran.

Die Menschheit will es mit Gott aufnehmen (Der babylonische Turm)

1 Die Menschen hatten damals noch alle dieselbe Sprache und gebrauchten dieselben Wörter. 2 Als sie nun von Osten aufbrachen, kamen sie in eine Ebene im Land Schinar und siedelten sich dort an. 3 Sie sagten zueinander: »Ans Werk! Wir machen Ziegel aus Lehm und brennen sie!« Sie wollten die Ziegel als Bausteine verwenden und Asphalt als Mörtel. 4 Sie sagten: »Ans Werk! Wir bauen uns eine Stadt mit einem Turm, der bis an den Himmel reicht! Dann wird unser Name in aller Welt berühmt. Dieses Bauwerk wird uns zusammenhalten, sodass wir nicht über die ganze Erde zerstreut werden.« 5 Da kam der HERR vom Himmel herab, um die Stadt und den Turm anzusehen, die sie bauten. 6 Als er alles gesehen hatte, sagte er: »Wohin wird das noch führen? Sie sind ein einziges Volk und sprechen alle dieselbe Sprache. Wenn sie diesen Bau vollenden, wird ihnen nichts mehr unmöglich sein. Sie werden alles ausführen, was ihnen in den Sinn kommt.« 7 Und dann sagte er: »Ans Werk! Wir steigen hinab und verwirren ihre Sprache, damit niemand mehr den anderen versteht!« 8 So zerstreute der HERR sie über die ganze Erde und sie konnten die Stadt nicht weiterbauen. 9 Darum heißt diese Stadt Babel,^[1] denn dort hat der HERR die Sprache der Menschen verwirrt und von dort aus die Menschheit über die ganze Erde zerstreut.

Die Nachkommen Sems bis zu Abraham (Abram)

10 Hier ist die Liste der Nachkommen Sems: Als Sem 100 Jahre alt war, zeugte er Arpachschad. Das war zwei Jahre nach der großen Flut.^[2] (Ge 10:21; 1Ch 1:24) 11 Danach lebte er noch 500 Jahre und zeugte weitere Söhne und Töchter. 12-25 Als Arpachschad 35 Jahre alt war, zeugte er Schelach und lebte danach noch 403 Jahre. Als Schelach 30 Jahre alt war, zeugte er Eber und lebte danach noch 403 Jahre. Als Eber 34 Jahre alt war, zeugte er Peleg und lebte danach noch 430 Jahre. Als Peleg 30 Jahre alt war, zeugte er Regu und lebte danach noch 209 Jahre. Als Regu 32 Jahre alt war, zeugte er Serug und lebte danach noch 207 Jahre. Als Serug 30 Jahre alt war, zeugte er Nahor und lebte danach noch 200 Jahre. Als Nahor 29 Jahre alt war, zeugte er Terach und lebte danach noch 119 Jahre. Sie alle zeugten nach ihrem Erstgeborenen noch weitere Söhne und Töchter. 26 Als Terach 70 Jahre alt war, zeugte er Abram, Nahor und Haran. 27 Hier ist die Liste der Nachkommen Terachs: Seine Söhne waren Abram, Nahor und Haran. Haran zeugte Lot; 28 er starb noch vor seinem Vater Terach in seiner Heimatstadt Ur in Chaldäa.^[3] 29 Abram heiratete Sarai und Nahor heiratete Milka, die Tochter Harans und Schwester Jiskas. 30 Sarai aber bekam keine Kinder. (Ge 15:2; Ge 17:15; Ge 21:1) 31 Terach brach aus Ur in Chaldäa auf, um ins Land Kanaan zu ziehen. Er nahm seinen Sohn Abram, seinen Enkel Lot und seine Schwiegertochter Sarai mit. Sie kamen bis nach Haran und siedelten sich dort an. 32 Terach wurde 205 Jahre alt; er starb in Haran.
