1 Here is what I have been saying. As long as your own children are young, they are no different from slaves in your house. They are no different, even though they will own all the property. 2 People are in charge of the property. And other people are in charge of the children. The children remain under their care until they become adults. At that time their fathers give them the property. 3 It is the same with us. When we were children, we were slaves to the basic spiritual powers of the world. 4 But then the chosen time came. God sent his Son. A woman gave birth to him. He was born under the authority of the law. 5 He came to set free those who were under the authority of the law. He wanted us to be adopted as children with all the rights children have. 6 Because you are his children, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts. He is the Holy Spirit. By his power we call God Abba. Abba means Father. 7 So you aren’t a slave any longer. You are God’s child. Because you are his child, God gives you the rights of those who are his children.

Paul’s concern for the believers in Galatia

8 At one time you didn’t know God. You were slaves to gods that are really not gods at all. 9 But now you know God. Even better, God knows you. So why are you turning back to those weak and worthless powers? Do you want to be slaves to them all over again? 10 You are observing special days and months and seasons and years! 11 I am afraid for you. I am afraid that somehow I have wasted my efforts on you. 12 I make my appeal to you, brothers and sisters. I’m asking you to become like me. After all, I became like you. You didn’t do anything wrong to me. 13 Remember when I first preached the good news to you? Remember I did that because I was ill. 14 And my illness was hard on you. But you weren’t mean to me. You didn’t make fun of me. Instead, you welcomed me as if I were an angel of God. You welcomed me as if I were Christ Jesus himself. 15 So why aren’t you treating me the same way now? Suppose you could have torn out your own eyes and given them to me. Then you would have done it. I am a witness to this. 16 Have I become your enemy now by telling you the truth? 17 Those people are trying hard to win you over. But it is not for your good. They want to take you away from us. They want you to commit yourselves to them. 18 It is fine to be committed to something, if the purpose is good. And you shouldn’t be committed only when I am with you. You should always be committed. 19 My dear children, I am in pain for you, just as I was when we first met. I have pain like a woman giving birth. And my pain will continue until Christ makes you like himself. 20 I wish I could be with you now. I wish I could change my tone of voice. As it is, I don’t understand you.

Hagar and Sarah

21 You who want to be under the authority of the law, tell me something. Don’t you know what the law says? 22 It is written that Abraham had two sons. The slave woman gave birth to one of them. The free woman gave birth to the other one. 23 Abraham’s son by the slave woman was born in the usual way. But his son by the free woman was born because of God’s promise. 24 These things are examples. The two women stand for two covenants. One covenant comes from Mount Sinai. It gives birth to children who are going to be slaves. It is Hagar. 25 Hagar stands for Mount Sinai in Arabia. She stands for the present city of Jerusalem. That’s because she and her children are slaves. 26 But the Jerusalem that is above is free. She is our mother. 27 It is written, ‘Be glad, woman, you who have never had children. Shout for joy and cry out loud, you who have never had labour pains. The woman who is all alone has more children than the woman who has a husband.’ (Isa 54:1) 28 Brothers and sisters, you are children because of God’s promise just as Isaac was. 29 At that time, the son born in the usual way tried to hurt the other son. The other son was born by the power of the Holy Spirit. It is the same now. 30 But what does Scripture say? ‘Get rid of the slave woman. Get rid of her son. The slave woman’s son will never have a share of the family’s property. He’ll never share it with the free woman’s son.’ (Ge 21:10) 31 Brothers and sisters, we are not the slave woman’s children. We are the free woman’s children.

1 Nun sage ich: Solange der rechtmäßige Erbe minderjährig ist, unterscheidet er sich in nichts von einem Sklaven, auch wenn ihm in Wirklichkeit alles gehört. 2 Bis zu dem Zeitpunkt, den der Vater im Testament festgelegt hat, ist er von Vormündern und Vermögensverwaltern abhängig. 3 So standen auch wir früher als Unmündige unter der Herrschaft der Mächte dieser Welt.^[1] (Eph 1:21) 4 Als aber die Zeit gekommen war, sandte Gott seinen Sohn. Der wurde als Mensch geboren^[2] und dem Gesetz unterstellt, (Joh 1:14) 5 um alle zu befreien, die unter der Herrschaft des Gesetzes standen. Durch ihn wollte Gott uns als seine mündigen Söhne und Töchter annehmen. 6 Weil ihr nun Gottes Söhne und Töchter seid, gab Gott euch den Geist seines Sohnes ins Herz. Der ruft aus uns: »Abba! Vater!« (Ro 8:15) 7 Du bist also nicht länger Sklave, sondern mündiger Sohn und mündige Tochter, und wenn du das bist, dann bist du nach Gottes Willen auch Erbe: Du bekommst, was Gott Abraham versprochen hat.^[3] (Ro 8:17)

Paulus sorgt sich um die Gemeinde

8 Ganz anders war es damals, als ihr Gott noch nicht gekannt habt: Wie Sklaven dientet ihr Göttern, die gar keine sind. (1Co 8:4; 1Co 12:2) 9 Jetzt habt ihr Gott erkannt, besser gesagt: Gott hat euch erkannt.^[4] Wie könnt ihr dann wieder zu diesen schwachen und armseligen Mächten zurückkehren? Wollt ihr von Neuem ihre Sklaven sein? (Col 2:20) 10 Ihr meint, ihr müsst auf bestimmte Tage, Monate, Festzeiten, Jahre achten und euch danach richten. (Col 2:16) 11 Ihr macht mir Sorgen! Soll meine ganze Arbeit an euch vergeblich gewesen sein? (Ga 2:2; Php 2:16) 12 Ich bitte euch, liebe Brüder und Schwestern:^[5] Werdet wie ich, weil ich ja auch wie ihr geworden bin – nämlich frei vom Gesetz.^[6] Ihr habt mir nie eine Kränkung zugefügt. (1Co 9:19) 13 Ihr wisst doch noch, wie ich zum ersten Mal bei euch war und euch die Gute Nachricht brachte. Ich war krank, (Ac 16:6) 14 und mein Zustand stellte euch auf eine harte Probe. Trotzdem habt ihr mich nicht verachtet oder verabscheut. Im Gegenteil, ihr habt mich wie einen Engel Gottes aufgenommen, ja wie Jesus Christus selbst. 15 Damals habt ihr euch glücklich gepriesen. Wo ist das nun geblieben? Ich kann euch bezeugen: Wenn es möglich gewesen wäre, hättet ihr euch sogar die Augen ausgerissen^[7] und sie mir gegeben. 16 Bin ich jetzt euer Feind geworden, weil ich euch die Gute Nachricht unverfälscht bewahren will? 17 Ihr werdet von Leuten umworben, die es nicht gut mit euch meinen. Sie wollen euch nur von mir und von Christus trennen,^[8] damit ihr sie umwerbt. (Ga 1:7) 18 Dagegen ist es gut, wenn ihr im guten Sinne mich umwerbt, und das nicht nur, wenn ich bei euch bin. 19 Meine Kinder, ich leide noch einmal Geburtswehen um euch, bis Christus in eurer Mitte Gestalt angenommen hat! (1Th 2:11) 20 Könnte ich nur bei euch sein und so zu euch reden, dass es euch ins Herz dringt! Ich bin ratlos, was ich mit euch machen soll.

Die beiden Söhne Abrahams

21 Ihr wollt euch dem Gesetz unterwerfen. Ich frage euch: Hört ihr nicht, was das Gesetz sagt? 22 Im Buch des Gesetzes steht: Abraham hatte zwei Söhne, einen von der Sklavin Hagar und einen von der freien Frau Sara. (Ge 16:15; Ge 21:3) 23 Der Sohn der Sklavin verdankte sein Leben den menschlichen Kräften,^[9] der Sohn der Freien verdankte es der Zusage Gottes. (Ge 17:18; Ro 4:17; Ro 9:7) 24 Diese Erzählung hat einen tieferen Sinn: Die beiden Mütter bedeuten zwei verschiedene Ordnungen Gottes. Die eine Ordnung, für die Hagar steht, wurde am Berg Sinai erlassen und bringt Sklaven hervor. (Ge 16:1; Ex 19:3; Ga 3:23; Ga 4:1; Ga 5:1)

25 Das Wort Hagar bezeichnet nämlich den Berg Sinai in Arabien. Er entspricht dem jetzigen Jerusalem; denn dies lebt mit seinen Kindern in der Sklaverei. 26 Das Jerusalem dagegen, das im Himmel bereitsteht, ist frei. Das ist unsere Mutter! (Heb 12:22; Re 21:2) 27 Von ihr heißt es: »Freu dich, du Unfruchtbare, obwohl du keine Kinder zur Welt bringst! Juble laut, obwohl du nicht in Wehen kommst! Denn die verlassene Frau hat viele Kinder, mehr als die, die den Mann hat.« (Isa 54:1) 28 Brüder und Schwestern,^[10] ihr verdankt wie Isaak euer Leben der Zusage Gottes. 29 Aber schon damals verfolgte der Sohn, der aus menschlichen Kräften geboren wurde, den andern, der sein Leben vom Geist Gottes hatte. So ist es auch jetzt. (Ge 21:9) 30 Aber was steht in den Heiligen Schriften? »Jage die Sklavin und ihren Sohn fort; denn der Sohn der Sklavin darf nicht mit dem Sohn der Freien zusammen erben.« (Ge 21:10) 31 Begreift doch, Brüder und Schwestern: Wir sind nicht Kinder der Sklavin, sondern der Freien!
