Israel comes to Mount Sinai

1 Exactly three months after the people of Israel left Egypt, they came to the Desert of Sinai. 2 After they started out from Rephidim, they entered the Desert of Sinai. They camped there in the desert in front of the mountain. 3 Then Moses went up to God. The LORD called out to him from the mountain. He said, ‘Here is what I want you to say to my people, who belong to Jacob’s family. Tell the Israelites, 4 “You have seen for yourselves what I did to Egypt. You saw how I carried you on the wings of eagles and brought you to myself. 5 Now obey me completely. Keep my covenant. If you do, then out of all the nations you will be my special treasure. The whole earth is mine. 6 But you will be a kingdom of priests to serve me. You will be my holy nation.” That is what you must tell the Israelites.’ 7 So Moses went back. He sent for the elders of the people. He explained to them everything the LORD had commanded him to say. 8 All the people answered together. They said, ‘We will do everything the LORD has said.’ So Moses brought their answer back to the LORD. 9 The LORD spoke to Moses. He said, ‘I am going to come to you in a thick cloud. The people will hear me speaking with you. They will always put their trust in you.’ Then Moses told the LORD what the people had said. 10 The LORD said to Moses, ‘Go to the people. Today and tomorrow set them apart for me. Let them wash their clothes. 11 Have the people ready by the third day. On that day the LORD will come down on Mount Sinai. Everyone will see it. 12 Put limits for the people around the mountain. Tell them, “Be careful that you do not go near the mountain. Do not even touch the foot of it. Whoever touches the mountain must be put to death. 13 Do not lay a hand on any of them. Kill them with stones or shoot them with arrows. Whether they are people or animals, do not let them live.” They may go near the mountain only when the ram’s horn gives out a long blast.’ 14 Moses went down the mountain to the people. After he set them apart for the LORD, they washed their clothes. 15 Then he spoke to the people. He said, ‘Get ready for the third day. Don’t have sex.’ 16 On the morning of the third day there was thunder and lightning. A thick cloud covered the mountain. A trumpet gave out a very loud blast. Everyone in the camp trembled with fear. 17 Then Moses led the people out of the camp to meet with God. They stood at the foot of the mountain. 18 Smoke covered Mount Sinai, because the LORD came down on it in fire. The smoke rose up from it like smoke from a furnace. The whole mountain trembled and shook. 19 The sound of the trumpet got louder and louder. Then Moses spoke. And the voice of God answered him. 20 The LORD came down to the top of Mount Sinai. He told Moses to come to the top of the mountain. So Moses went up. 21 The LORD said to him, ‘Go down and warn the people. They must not force their way through to see the LORD. If they do, many of them will die. 22 The priests approach the LORD when they serve him. But even they must set themselves apart for the LORD. If they do not, his anger will break out against them.’ 23 Moses said to the LORD, ‘The people can’t come up Mount Sinai. You yourself warned us. You said, “Put limits around the mountain. Set it apart as holy.” ’ 24 The LORD replied, ‘Go down. Bring Aaron up with you. But the priests and the people must not force their way through. They must not come up to the LORD. If they do, his anger will break out against them.’ 25 So Moses went down to the people and told them.

Vorbereitung auf die Begegnung mit Gott

1 Am dritten Neumondstag^[1] nach dem Auszug der Israeliten aus Ägypten kamen sie in die Wüste Sinai. 2 Sie waren von ihrem Lagerplatz bei Refidim dorthin aufgebrochen und schlugen nun ihr Lager vor dem Berg Sinai auf. 3 Mose stieg zu Gott auf den Berg. Der HERR rief ihm vom Berg aus zu: »Sag dem Volk Israel, den Nachkommen Jakobs: 4 ›Ihr habt gesehen, wie ich an den Ägyptern meine Macht erwiesen habe. Und ihr habt erlebt, dass ich euch getragen habe wie ein Adler seine Jungen; ich habe euch wohlbehalten hierher zu mir gebracht. (De 32:11) 5 Wenn ihr mir nun treu bleibt und auf mich hört, sollt ihr mein ganz persönliches Eigentum sein unter allen Völkern. 6 aber ihr sollt ein Volk von Priestern sein, das mir ganz zur Verfügung steht und mir ungeteilt dient.‹^[2] Das sollst du den Leuten von Israel sagen.« 7 Als Mose zurückkam, rief er die Ältesten des Volkes zusammen und richtete ihnen aus, was der HERR ihm aufgetragen hatte. 8 Das ganze Volk stimmte zu: »Wir wollen alles tun, was der HERR gesagt hat!« Mose überbrachte dem HERRN die Antwort des Volkes, 9 und der HERR sagte zu ihm: »Ich werde in einer dunklen Wolke zu dir kommen, damit das Volk hören kann, wie ich mit dir rede, und damit es nie mehr daran zweifelt, dass ich dich beauftragt habe.«^[3] (Ex 13:21; Ex 24:15; Ex 33:9; Ex 34:5; Ex 40:34; 1Ki 8:10; Isa 4:5)

10 Weiter sagte der HERR: »Geh zum Volk und sorge dafür, dass sie sich heute und morgen auf die Begegnung mit mir vorbereiten. Sie sollen alles meiden, was unrein macht,^[4] und sollen ihre Kleider waschen. 11 Übermorgen sollen sie bereit sein. Denn an diesem Tag werde ich vor den Augen des ganzen Volkes auf den Berg Sinai herabkommen. 12 Zieh eine Grenze rings um den Berg und sag ihnen: ›Nehmt euch in Acht! Steigt nicht auf den Berg, berührt auch nicht seinen Fuß! Wer es tut, ist dem Tod verfallen. (Ex 34:3; Heb 12:20) 13 Er muss gesteinigt oder mit Speeren und Pfeilen umgebracht werden. Das gilt für Mensch und Tier in gleicher Weise. Erst wenn die Posaune^[5] ertönt, dürfen die, die ich dafür bestimmen werde, auf den Berg steigen.‹« 14 Mose stieg wieder hinab zum Volk. Er befahl den Israeliten, sich auf die Begegnung mit dem HERRN vorzubereiten und ihre Kleider zu waschen. 15 Er sagte zu ihnen: »Macht euch für übermorgen bereit. Kein Mann darf in der Zwischenzeit mit einer Frau Verkehr haben.« (1Sa 21:4)

Gott kommt auf den Berg Sinai

16 Am Morgen des dritten Tages, als es gerade hell wurde, begann es zu donnern und zu blitzen, eine dichte Wolke bedeckte den Berg und mächtiger Posaunenschall war zu hören. Das Volk im Lager zitterte vor Angst. (De 4:10; Heb 12:18) 17 Da führte Mose das Volk aus dem Lager heraus, Gott entgegen. Am Fuß des Berges stellten sie sich auf. 18 Der ganze Berg Sinai war in Rauch gehüllt, weil der HERR im Feuer auf ihn herabgekommen war. Der Rauch stieg auf wie der Rauch eines Schmelzofens und der ganze Berg bebte. 19 Der Posaunenschall wurde immer lauter. Mose rief und Gott antwortete ihm mit einer Stimme, die wie Donner klang. 20 Nachdem der HERR auf den Gipfel des Berges herabgekommen war, rief er Mose zu sich und der stieg hinauf. 21 Doch der HERR sagte zu ihm: »Geh noch einmal zurück und warne das Volk! Schärfe ihnen ein, dass sie auf keinen Fall die Grenze überschreiten, um mich zu sehen. Sonst werden viele von ihnen den Tod finden. 22 Auch die Priester, die beim Opferdienst in meine Nähe kommen, müssen sich durch besondere Handlungen darauf vorbereiten, sonst ist es um ihr Leben geschehen.« 23 Mose erwiderte: »Das Volk kann gar nicht heraufkommen, denn du selbst hast uns befohlen, eine Grenze um den Berg zu ziehen und ihn damit für heilig und unbetretbar zu erklären.« 24 Doch der HERR sagte zu ihm: »Geh hinunter! Und dann komm mit Aaron wieder herauf. Die Priester aber und das Volk dürfen die Grenze nicht überschreiten, um zu mir heraufzusteigen. Sonst richte ich ein Blutbad unter ihnen an.« 25 So ging Mose noch einmal hinunter und warnte das Volk.
