Samuel’s final speech to Israel

1 Samuel spoke to all the Israelites. He said, ‘I’ve done everything you asked me to do. I’ve placed a king over you. 2 Now you have a king as your leader. But I’m old. My hair is grey. My sons are here with you. I’ve been your leader from the time I was young until this day. 3 Here I stand. Bring charges against me if you can. The LORD is a witness. And so is his anointed king. Whose ox have I taken? Whose donkey have I taken? Have I cheated anyone? Have I treated anyone badly? Have I accepted money from anyone who wanted special favours? If I’ve done any of these things, I’ll make it right.’ 4 ‘You haven’t cheated us,’ they replied. ‘You haven’t treated us badly. You haven’t taken anything from anyone.’ 5 Samuel said to them, ‘The LORD is a witness against you this day. And so is his anointed king. They are witnesses that I haven’t taken anything from any of you.’ ‘The LORD is a witness,’ they said. 6 Then Samuel said to the people, ‘The LORD appointed Moses and Aaron. He brought out of Egypt your people who lived long ago. 7 Now then, stand here. I’m going to remind you of all the good things the LORD has done for you and your people. He is a witness. 8 ‘After Jacob’s family entered Egypt, they cried out to the LORD for help. The LORD sent Moses and Aaron. They brought your people out of Egypt. They had them make their homes in this land. 9 ‘But the people forgot the LORD their God. So he put them under the control of Sisera. Sisera was the commander of the army of Hazor. The LORD also put the Israelites under the control of the Philistines and the king of Moab. All those nations fought against Israel. 10 So the people cried out to the LORD. They said, “We have sinned. We’ve deserted the LORD. We’ve served gods that are named Baal. We’ve served female gods that are named Ashtoreth. But save us now from the power of our enemies. Then we will serve you.” 11 The LORD sent Gideon, Barak, Jephthah and me. He saved you from the power of your enemies who were all around you. So you lived in safety. 12 ‘But then you saw that Nahash, the king of Ammon, was about to attack you. So you said to me, “No! We want a king to rule over us.” You said it even though the LORD your God was your king. 13 Now here is the king you have chosen. He’s the one you asked for. The LORD has placed a king over you. 14 But you must have respect for the LORD. You must serve him and obey him. You must not say no to his commands. Both you and the king who rules over you must obey the LORD your God. If you do, that’s good. 15 But you must not disobey him. You must not say no to his commands. If you do, his power will be against you. That’s what happened to your people who lived before you. 16 ‘So stand still. Watch the great thing the LORD is about to do right here in front of you! 17 It’s time to gather in the wheat, isn’t it? I’ll call out to the LORD to send thunder and rain. Then you will realise what an evil thing you did in the sight of the LORD. You shouldn’t have asked for a king.’ 18 Samuel called out to the LORD. That same day the LORD sent thunder and rain. So all the people had great respect for the LORD and for Samuel. 19 They said to Samuel, ‘Pray to the LORD your God for us. Pray that we won’t die because we asked for a king. That was an evil thing to do. We added it to all our other sins.’ 20 ‘Don’t be afraid,’ Samuel replied. ‘It’s true that you have done all these evil things. But don’t turn away from the LORD. Serve him with all your heart. 21 Don’t turn away and worship statues of gods. They are useless. They can’t do you any good. They can’t save you either. They are completely useless. 22 But the LORD will be true to his great name. He won’t turn his back on his people. That’s because he was pleased to make you his own people. 23 I would never sin against the LORD by failing to pray for you. I’ll teach you to live in a way that is good and right. 24 But be sure to have respect for the LORD. Serve him faithfully. Do it with all your heart. Think about the great things he has done for you. 25 But don’t be stubborn. Don’t continue to do what is evil. If you do, both you and your king will be destroyed.’

1 Samuel sagte zu den versammelten Männern Israels: »Ich habe eure Bitte erfüllt und euch einen König gegeben. 2 Hier steht er vor euch; er ist von jetzt an euer Anführer. Ich selbst bin schon alt und meine Söhne sind als erwachsene Männer hier unter euch. Von meiner Jugend an bis heute habe ich euch geführt. 3 Ich stelle mich jetzt eurem Urteil. Erhebt vor dem HERRN und seinem gesalbten König Anklage gegen mich, wenn ich irgendein Unrecht begangen habe. Wem habe ich ein Rind oder einen Esel weggenommen? Wen habe ich erpresst, wen unterdrückt? Von wem habe ich mich durch Bestechung dazu bringen lassen, als Richter ein Auge zuzudrücken? Ich bin bereit, für alles Wiedergutmachung zu leisten.« (Nu 16:15; Sir 46:19) 4 Die Männer Israels antworteten: »Du hast keinen von uns unterdrückt oder erpresst und von niemand etwas angenommen.« 5 Samuel sagte: »Der HERR und sein gesalbter König sind Zeugen dafür, dass ihr kein Unrecht an mir gefunden habt.« »Ja, so ist’s«, riefen die Männer. 6 Dann sagte Samuel zu dem Volk: »Der HERR hat Mose und Aaron eingesetzt und eure Vorfahren durch sie aus Ägypten herausgeführt. 7 Tretet nun her, damit ich euch vor ihm zur Rechenschaft ziehen kann. Ich werde euch alles vorhalten, was der HERR in seiner Treue für euch und eure Vorfahren getan hat. 8 Als Jakob mit seiner Familie nach Ägypten gekommen war und eure Vorfahren in ihrer Not zum HERRN um Hilfe riefen, schickte der HERR ihnen Mose und Aaron, und durch diese beiden führte er sie aus Ägypten und gab ihnen hier in diesem Land eine Heimat. (Ex 2:23; Ex 6:26) 9 Sie aber vergaßen bald, was der HERR für sie getan hatte, und wandten sich von ihm ab. Deshalb gab der HERR sie ihren Feinden preis: Sisera, dem Heerführer der Stadt Hazor, den Philistern und dem König der Moabiter. Die führten Krieg gegen sie und brachten sie in schwere Bedrängnis.^[1] (Jud 3:12; Jud 4:2; Jud 13:1) 10 Da riefen sie zum HERRN um Hilfe und sagten: ›Es war unrecht, dass wir dich, unseren Gott, verlassen und stattdessen den Gott Baal und die Göttin Astarte verehrt haben. Befreie uns von unseren Feinden, dann sollst du allein unser Gott sein!‹ (Jud 10:10) 11 Da schickte der HERR euch Jerubbaal, Bedan,^[2] Jiftach und schließlich mich selbst und half euch gegen alle Feinde rings um euch her, sodass ihr in Frieden und Sicherheit in eurem Land leben konntet. (Jud 7:1; Jud 11:29; 1Sa 3:20) 12 Als ihr aber saht, dass der Ammoniterkönig Nahasch mit seinem Heer gegen euch anrückte, sagtet ihr zu mir: ›Nein, ein König soll uns regieren!‹, obwohl doch der HERR, euer Gott, euer König ist. (1Sa 8:5) 13 Nun, ihr habt den König bekommen, den ihr gewollt habt; der HERR hat ihn euch gegeben. 14 Jetzt kommt es darauf an, dass ihr den HERRN ehrt und ihm gehorcht, auf seine Weisungen hört, euch seinen Anordnungen nicht widersetzt und ihm stets treu bleibt, ihr und der König, der über euch herrscht. (De 13:5) 15 Wenn ihr aber nicht auf den HERRN hört und euch seinen Anordnungen widersetzt, dann wird der HERR sich gegen euch wenden, wie er es bei euren Vorfahren getan hat. (Nu 14:29; Jud 2:13) 16 Darum tretet her und gebt acht, was für ein großes Wunder der HERR jetzt vor euren Augen tun wird! 17 Es ist gerade Weizenernte, und ihr wisst, dass zu dieser Zeit niemals Regen fällt.^[3] Ich aber werde zum HERRN rufen und ihn bitten, dass er ein Gewitter schickt. Dann werdet ihr einsehen, was für ein großes Unrecht gegen den HERRN ihr begangen habt, als ihr einen König verlangtet.« 18 Samuel rief zum HERRN und der HERR ließ es donnern und regnen. Da bekamen die Israeliten große Angst vor dem HERRN und vor Samuel 19 und sie sagten zu Samuel: »Bitte den HERRN, deinen Gott, für uns, dass wir nicht sterben müssen! Wir sind sündige Menschen, und nun haben wir auch noch die Untat begangen, einen König zu verlangen.« 20 Samuel antwortete ihnen: »Habt keine Angst! Ihr habt zwar all dieses Unrecht getan, aber haltet von jetzt an treu zum HERRN und gehorcht ihm von ganzem Herzen. 21 Lauft nur nicht den ohnmächtigen Götzen nach! Sie können euch nicht helfen und euch nicht retten, weil sie nichts sind. (Ps 115:4) 22 Der HERR bleibt sich selbst treu; er wird euch nicht verstoßen, nachdem er einmal beschlossen hat, euch zu seinem Volk zu machen. (De 26:17; De 27:9; De 29:11; 2Sa 7:24)

23 Auch ich werde weiter wie bisher mit meinen Gebeten beim HERRN für euch eintreten und euch den guten und geraden Weg weisen. Ich würde ja Schuld auf mich laden, wenn ich damit aufhörte. (1Sa 7:8) 24 Aber ihr müsst den HERRN ehren und ihm in Treue und von ganzem Herzen gehorchen. Denkt doch daran, was für gewaltige Dinge er für euch getan hat! 25 Wenn ihr trotz alledem weiter Unrecht tut, werdet ihr samt eurem König weggefegt werden.«
