1Dear friends, do not believe every spirit. Test the spirits to see if they belong to God. Many false prophets have gone out into the world.2Here is how you can recognise the Spirit of God. Every spirit agreeing that Jesus Christ came in a human body belongs to God.3But every spirit that doesn’t agree with this does not belong to God. You have heard that the spirit of the great enemy of Christ is coming. Even now it is already in the world.4Dear children, you belong to God. You have not accepted the teachings of the false prophets. That’s because the one who is in you is powerful. He is more powerful than the one who is in the world.5False prophets belong to the world. So they speak from the world’s point of view. And the world listens to them.6We belong to God. And those who know God listen to us. But those who don’t belong to God don’t listen to us. That’s how we can tell the difference between the Spirit of truth and the spirit of lies.
We love because God loved us
7Dear friends, let us love one another, because love comes from God. Everyone who loves has become a child of God and knows God.8Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.9Here is how God showed his love among us. He sent his one and only Son into the world. He sent him so we could receive life through him.10Here is what love is. It is not that we loved God. It is that he loved us and sent his Son to give his life to pay for our sins.11Dear friends, since God loved us this much, we should also love one another.12No one has ever seen God. But if we love one another, God lives in us. His love is made complete in us.13Here’s how we know that we are joined to him and he to us. He has given us his Holy Spirit.14The Father has sent his Son to be the Saviour of the world. We have seen it and are witnesses to it.15God lives in anyone who agrees that Jesus is the Son of God. This kind of person remains joined to God.16So we know that God loves us. We depend on it. God is love. Anyone who leads a life of love is joined to God. And God is joined to them.17Suppose love is fulfilled among us. Then we can be without fear on the day God judges the world. Love is fulfilled among us when in this world we are like Jesus.18There is no fear in love. Instead, perfect love drives away fear. That’s because fear has to do with being punished. The one who fears does not have perfect love.19We love because he loved us first.20Suppose someone claims to love God but hates a brother or sister. Then they are a liar. They don’t love their brother or sister, whom they have seen. So they can’t love God, whom they haven’t seen.21Here is the command God has given us. Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.
1Ihr Lieben, glaubt nicht allen, die vorgeben, Botschaften des Geistes zu verkünden![1] Prüft sie, ob der Geist Gottes aus ihnen redet. Denn diese Welt ist voll von falschen Propheten. (Mt 7:15; 1Th 5:21; 1Jo 2:18)2An folgendem Merkmal könnt ihr erkennen, ob es sich um den Geist Gottes handelt: Wer bekennt, dass Jesus Christus ein Mensch von Fleisch und Blut wurde, hat den Geist Gottes. (Joh 1:14; 1Co 12:3)3Wer das leugnet,[2] aus dem redet nicht der Geist Gottes, sondern der Geist des Antichrist. Ihr habt gehört, dass er in die Welt kommen soll, und er ist schon da. (1Jo 2:18; 1Jo 2:22)4Aber ihr, meine Kinder, stammt von Gott und habt die falschen Propheten besiegt. Er, der in euch wirkt, ist mächtiger als der, der diese Welt regiert. (1Jo 5:5)5Sie stammen aus der Welt und reden die Sprache der Welt. Deshalb hört die Welt auf sie.6Aber wir stammen von Gott, und wer Gott kennt, hört auf uns. Wer nicht von Gott stammt, hört nicht auf uns. So können wir den Geist der Wahrheit vom Geist des Irrtums unterscheiden. (1Jo 2:4; 1Jo 3:1)
Gottes Liebe zu uns: Quelle der brüderlich-schwesterlichen Liebe
7Ihr Lieben, wir wollen einander lieben, denn die Liebe kommt von Gott! Wer liebt, hat Gott zum Vater und kennt ihn.8Wer nicht liebt, hat Gott nicht erkannt; denn Gott ist Liebe.9Dadurch ist Gottes Liebe unter uns offenbar geworden, dass er seinen einzigen Sohn in die Welt sandte. Durch ihn wollte er uns das neue Leben schenken. (Joh 3:16)10Das Einzigartige an dieser Liebe ist: Nicht wir haben Gott geliebt, sondern er hat uns geliebt. Er hat seinen Sohn gesandt, damit er durch seinen Tod Sühne leiste für unsere Schuld.[3] (1Jo 2:2; 1Jo 3:5)11Ihr Lieben, wenn Gott uns so sehr geliebt hat, dann müssen auch wir einander lieben. (Joh 13:34; 1Jo 3:11; 1Jo 4:21; 2Jo 1:5)12Niemand hat Gott je gesehen. Aber wenn wir einander lieben, lebt Gott in uns. Dann hat seine Liebe bei uns ihr Ziel erreicht. (Joh 1:18; 1Jo 2:5; 1Jo 4:17)13Dass wir in Gott leben und er in uns, wissen wir, weil er uns Anteil an seinem Geist gegeben hat. (Joh 14:16; Ro 8:4; Ro 8:9; Ro 8:14)14Wir haben es selbst gesehen und sind Zeugen dafür, dass der Vater seinen Sohn gesandt hat als den Retter der Welt. (Joh 4:25; Joh 15:27)15Wer sich zu Jesus als dem Sohn Gottes bekennt, in dem lebt Gott und er lebt in Gott. (1Jo 2:23)16Wir jedenfalls haben erkannt und halten im Glauben daran fest, dass Gott uns liebt. Gott ist Liebe. Wer in der Liebe lebt, lebt in Gott und Gott lebt in ihm. (Joh 15:4)17Auch darin hat die Liebe Gottes bei uns ihr Ziel erreicht, dass wir dem Tag des Gerichts voller Zuversicht entgegensehen; denn so wie Christus mit dem Vater verbunden ist, so sind ja auch wir es in dieser Welt. (Joh 3:18; Joh 5:24; 1Jo 3:21; 1Jo 4:12)18Die Liebe kennt keine Angst. Wahre Liebe vertreibt die Angst. Wer Angst hat und vor der Strafe zittert, bei dem hat die Liebe ihr Ziel noch nicht erreicht.19Wir lieben, weil Gott uns zuerst geliebt hat.20Wenn jemand behauptet: »Ich liebe Gott«, und dabei seinen Bruder oder seine Schwester[4] hasst, dann lügt er. Wenn er seine Glaubensgeschwister, die er sieht, nicht liebt, dann kann er Gott, den er nicht sieht, erst recht nicht lieben. (1Jo 2:9)21Gott gab uns dieses Gebot: Wer ihn liebt, muss auch seinen Bruder und seine Schwester lieben. (Mr 12:29; 1Jo 4:11)
